From the ancient Greek goddesses Athena, Artemis and Gaia to women of the New Testament and finally present-day nuns in Greek monasteries, this pilgrimage will focus on the influence of women on the spirituality and history of Christianity. Lydia, Euodia and Syntyche are women named by Paul as partners in ministry in Philippi. Phoebe, Priscilla, and Junia are named as leaders in the church and in the city. Our Greek guide, Aliki, will delight you with her vast knowledge and sto-ries. Our educational director, Christine Schenk, CSJ, will share the history and the cultural context of influential women leaders in the early churches. Our spiritual director, Russ Petrus, will help participants prayerfully reflect on the lives of our foremothers in faith and the meaning of their contributions for both women and men in the church today.

ITINERARYDay 1 (March 4) Wednesday - fly from U.S. to Thessaloniki.

Day 2 (March 5) Thursday - Arrive in Thessaloniki (Acts 17) we check in at our hotel, have dinner and rest. At Thessaloniki we remember a group of young women, led by Agape, Eirene, and Chione, martyred there in the early fourth century.

Day 3 (March 6) Friday: The next morning we continue to Philippi, a Center of Paul’s early ministry, where Lydia (Acts 16), found-ed a house church and where Euodia and Syntyche (Phil. 4:2-3) are thought to be among the episkopoi and diakonoi leading the church there. Return to Thessaloniki overnight.

Day 4 (March 7) Saturday: After a short tour of Thessaloniki, we drive south to Vergina, with its treasures of gold from the tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, and learn about the burial of Macedonian queens. On a short stop at Verria we remem-ber Paul’s visit there (Acts 17:10-14). Overnight in Kalamabaka.

Day 5 (March 8) Sunday: The hilltop monasteries of Meteora draw us. We will visit one of the women’s monasteries, then continue our drive south to Delphi, one of the most breathtaking sites in Greece, where thousands of visitors sought guidance from a prophetic woman, called the Pythia, who spoke on behalf of the gods. Overnight in Delphi.

Day 6 (March 9) Monday: We visit the site and museum of Delphi with its famous sculptures, then continue our drive and arrive in Athens, which will be our home for the rest of the journey. On one evening during our stay, we will dine at a restaurant that recreates the menu of the fifth century BCE.

Day 7 (March 10) Tuesday: Today our journey takes us to Corinth, an extensive archeological site where Paul first met Prisca and Aquila (Acts 18:1-3) who founded house churches in Corinth, Ephesus and Rome. We will have a short stop at the seaport of Cen-chreae the home of Paul’s patron Phoebe, the female deacon who carried his letter to the Romans to Rome (Rom 16:1-2).

Day 8 (March 11) Wednesday: A short ferry ride takes us to the lovely island of Aegina, home of our tour agent Yannis. We will visit a women’s monastery, St. Nectarios, dedicated to the most recent saint in the Orthodox Church and tour a beautiful little temple to the relatively unknown goddess, Afea, who was thought to have protected women in childbirth. We also celebrate a special prayer service to the “God beyond all names.”

Day 9 (March 12) Thursday: This morning in Athens we visit the Acropolis with its Parthenon, sanctuary of the goddess Athena, the Agora (market) of ancient Athens, and the Areopagis where Paul made a dramatic connection between the Athenian worship of “an unknown God” and the God of Christians (Acts 17:16–34). Free time in the afternoon to visit museums or to shop. The final din-ner will be on the rooftop of our hotel.

Day 10 (March 13) Friday: Depart for home more aware of the gift and influence of the New Testament women who lived and min-istered in this land and helped shape early Christianity. Page 3
