Pilgrim Women’s Annual Day

Women were celebrated during Pilgrim’s

morning worship service on Sunday, September 26, as

Rev. Catherine Scott Jackson of Chicago (one of

Pilgrim’s “daughters”) brought the message. She

talked from the subject “I Will Surely Go; I’m in His

Will,” with scripture reading from Judges 4:1-9.

She used Deborah, a prophetess and judge of

Israel, as an example of the spirit God has imbued in

women to be leaders as well as followers of His will.

She challenged both women and men to “get up and

go” to help solve the many problems in our society,

especially to save our children.

Since moving to Chicago in 2006 to work with

her husband, Philip Jackson, Rev. Catherine has

allowed God to lead her in many achievements.

(More about Rev. Jackson on Page 3.)

The worship service was conducted entirely by

Pilgrim women including clergy members (top left)

Rev. Catherine Scott Jackson and Ministers

Carmen Jordan, Sharon Olson, and Angela

Davis. The special Women’s Choir (middle left)

was directed by Sisters Sharon Thurmond and

Beverly Owens, and the voices brought many to

their feet in praise!

Rev. Catherine’s Lydian Sisters (below right)

prepared a reception feast for all to enjoy. Presi-

dent of the Lydians is Mrs. Lillie Hamberlin (front

row right).

Shown (from bottom left) are Phillip and Rev.

Catherine Jackson; Pastor and First Lady

Board. As President of the Women’s Ministry,

Mrs. Albertha Towns (pictured on Page 4) follows

guided this ministry throughout the years.

(Free-will offering.)

Location:

St. Luke Baptist Church

2919-19th Street, Rockford

MORE . . . REV. CATHERINE SCOTT JACKSON

Catherine Scott moved to Rockford from Davenport, Iowa in 1991and became a member of the Pilgrim Baptist

Church. She accepted God's call to His ministry and was ordained in 2004, becoming Pilgrim's first woman clergy

member. She moved to Chicago in 2006 to work with the Black Star Project, founded by her husband, Phillip Jackson.

She is the mother of Kwanda and Stuart Scott and has two grandsons.

A graduate of St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a

double major in Political Science and Sociology and holds a Master of Divinity Degree from Samuel DeWitt Proctor

School of Theology, Virginia Union University.

In Rockford, Rev. Catherine held leadership positions in several programs and offices including Executive

Director of Booker Washington Center and over 12 years as Executive Director of the Mayor's Office Drug-Free

Community Partnership Program. In Chicago, she is founder and CEO of Agape Global Servant Leadership Ministries;

an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ serving on many auxiliaries and ministries; and is Associate Pastor

at ABBA Renewal of Faith. She said on Sunday how good it is to come “home” to her Pilgrim Family.

At right, Pastor Board con-

gratulates Deacon and Mrs.

Roby and Sonia Johnson on

being chosen as Grandparents of

the Year.

The award was made (to their

great surprise) during a Grand-

parents’ Day luncheon sponsored

by Laclede’s Heart Ministries at

the Radisson Hotel.

They were nominated by most

of their 10 children (6 boys and 4

girls), 32 grandchildren, and 32

great-grandchildren—all of whom

were baptized and grew up at

Pilgrim. Congratulations!

Mark your calendars for these opportunities to

show love and appreciation to our First Family!

Mrs. Janet Mitchell is

President of Pastor’s Care Ministry.

Pilgrim’s Senior Saints Ministry

celebrated its 11th Anniversary with a

banquet on Saturday evening,

September 25, in the Nancy Smith

Youth Center.

This ministry is currently led by

Mrs. Lorraine Thurmond as Presi-

dent and affords all seniors the

opportunity to meet at 12:00 noon

each third Thursday at Pilgrim for a

potluck meal, a program, and

socialization. A part of the Senior

Saints Mission is “to unite senior

church members into a fellowship of

love, encouragement, and joy . . . and

strengthen our faith and love for God

and the church.” Mrs. Leona Charles is Program Chair.

Former President and a founding member, Mrs.

Beulah Slaughter, sent a congratulatory message from

New Jersey which was read by Mrs. Thurmond.

Guest speaker for the evening

was Rev. K. Edward Copeland,

Pastor of new Zion Baptist Church.

Pastor Copeland engaged and

reminisced with the audience about

how things “used to be.” He chose

as a title, “Done, But Not Finished.”

Scripture was from Psalms 71:18,

which was read by Mrs. Audrey

Rivers: “Now also when I am old

and greyheaded, O God, forsake

me not; until I have shewed thy

strength unto this generation, and

thy power to every one that is to

come.”

Rev. Copeland made clear the

message that we live to be seniors as a “testimony to next

generations of the transforming power of Jesus Christ.”

He strongly urged this generation of seniors to “tell the

next generation where you came from.”

At right are (L to R) Pastor

Board, Mrs. Marilyn

Board, and Rev. K.

Edward Copeland (Guest

Speaker); Pastor and

Mrs. Darren Loeppky and

Rev. and Mrs. Edward

Libby of Creekwood

Baptist Church.

Anniversary cakes were contributed by the

family of Mrs. Audrey Rivers whose 95th

birthday would be September 29.
