Rules for 4-H Projects & Activities

Listed below are the rules for project exhibits for the 2015-2016 school year. All projects displayed must have been made this school year and be the work of the 4-H member. (Parents are permitted to assist with the projects.) Be sure to put your name on each project. Please call (606) 432-2534 or 1-800-233-1390 if you have questions. *Denotes projects which are eligible for State Fair entry *ART: 4-H members may exhibit projects in the following categories. * Exhibit a Nature Craft you have made. *Drawing I - Exhibit five drawings that you have rendered using pencil, charcoal, pastels, markers or chalk. These drawings may be in black and white or color. No cartoons or tracings are permitted. No copyrighted materials. *Drawing II - Exhibit ten drawings that you have rendered using pencil, charcoal, pastels, markers or chalk. These drawings may be in black and white or color. No cartoons or tracings are permitted. No copyrighted materials. *Folk Art - Exhibit items that have paint for a decorative or craft purpose on items other than canvas or paper. (No clothing) Exhibits may be a painted or decorated stool, gourd, small

Jewelry Making: Exhibit one piece of jewelry created by youth (no pony beads or kits allowed.) Glass, clay, or wooden beads (painted or carved) permitted only. Junior: (Grades 4-8) Exhibit a piece of jewelry created by youth. Senior: (Grades 9-12) Exhibit two items of jewelry created by youth. No elastic material may be used to string beads. Items must match like earrings and a necklace. Leather Craft: Exhibit one of the following items made from leather from the project book:

Bill Fold * Leather Bracelet

Lady’s Purse * Other Stamped designs

*Nature Crafts - Items made from natural materials. Examples are seed pictures, wreaths

of natural material, hand carved native materials or decorative gourds. No kits allowed. No paint by number painting permitted. *Painting - Exhibit a painting that you have rendered using acrylic, water color or oil.

POSTERS: 4-H members in the poster project should display posters as outlined below. Letters may be pre-cut or hand rendered. Graphics may be attached. Posters should be 16” x 22” in size.

*Posters I - Exhibit two posters that you have designed (according to the guidelines on page 6). One poster should be on 4-H, 4-H History or one of your own choice.

PUPPETRY: 4-H members enrolled in the project should complete the following:

*Puppetry I - Exhibit three puppets as described in the project leaflet on pages 1, 2, & 3.

Neatness and usefulness is important. Other types of puppets may be exhibited.

Weaving – Exhibit one or more items that you have woven using yarn, fabric scraps. You may use the looms described in the project book. This may include placemats, pot holders (2), small wall hangings, etc. BABYSITTING: 4-H members enrolled in the Babysitting Projects are required to exhibit the following:

Babysitting I - A babysitting kit as discussed in the project book. Included in this bag should be one completed homemade recipe for play dough or finger paint and a puppet. You should also include games and stories you plan to use when babysitting. Complete and exhibit your Babysitting Book.

Babysitting II - Exhibit a babysitting kit, two completed recipes, two different puppets described in the project book and games and stories you plan to use while babysitting. Complete and exhibit your Babysitting Book.

BICYCLE: 4-H members enrolled in Bicycle Projects should exhibit the following:

Bicycle I - Complete the project book. Also, make a 14 x 22 inch chart with a drawing of your bicycle. Label the parts of your bike. Or you may make a poster on bike safety. Bicycle II - Write a story about your bicycle activities, telling the things you have done to maintain the bike. Make a poster showing the items serviced. Bicycle III - Write a story about your bicycle activities. On a 14 x 22 inch poster, draw a bike that you have personalized as discussed in the project book. (Include two photographs - one of your bicycle before it is personalized and one after it is personalized.)

*BREADMAKING - 4-H members enrolled in Bread Projects may bring their

projects to be judged. All exhibits should be placed in paper plates and wrapped in clear plastic wrap. Unit I - Four Cornmeal Muffins, Unit II - Four Muffins, chocolate chip, bran or whole wheat Unit III - Four baking powder biscuits Unit IV - One Quick Bread Loaf of banana bread Unit V - Four soft pretzels rolled, twisted or carved.

Exhibit one from the following: FOOD PRESERVATION - 1) Exhibit four colossal cookies in which you have used appropriate freezing techniques. 2) Dry 12 dried apple slices and put in a zipped bag. 3) One pint of dill pickles 4) One pint of zesty salsa 5) 1/2 pint of cooked strawberry jam or 6) One pint of green beans CAT PROJECT - * Neatly fill out booklet and do a 14 x 22” poster on cat breeds or cat care. Include a photograph of your cat.

Coal Science - You may exhibit two of the following that has been made during the 2015-2016 school year. 1) Exhibit a poster on ways to use coal. 2) Exhibit a neatly completed project book. 3) Exhibit a coal-crystal garden. 4) Coal Art - Exhibit an item you have made using coal.

*COOKING: 4-H members enrolled in Foods Projects may bring exhibits to the Rally

to be judged and awarded ribbons. All exhibits should be placed on paper plates, covered with waxed paper or plastic wrap and labeled. You may enter one of the following exhibits, according to the unit in which you are enrolled: (Only items listed will be judged.)

*Unit I - You may exhibit one of the following: four pieces of coffee cake with topping, four oatmeal drop cookies or four oatmeal muffins.

*Unit 2 - You may exhibit one of the following: four rolled biscuits, four brownies or four cheese muffins.

*Unit 3 - You may exhibit one of the following: four scones, (raisin may be

substituted for cranberries), one 8” or 9” rich chocolate cake (no icing), one 8” or 9” layer carrot or zucchini cake (no icing), four cinnamon twists (no icing) or four soft pretzels.

*Unit 4 - You may complete one of the following: basic chiffon cake, one whole

double crusted apple pie, one loaf of oatmeal bread, one loaf honey whole wheat bread made in a bread machine, four pieces classic chocolate fudge. BAKE SHOP - Exhibit a total of twelve cookies made from two recipes found in the project book.

*DAIRY FOODS: All 4-H members enrolled in the Diary Foods projects may exhibit

the following. All exhibits should be placed on a paper plate and wrapped in clear plastic wrap.

*Unit I, Milk - Eight oatmeal cookies,

*Unit II, Ice Cream - Eight granola cookies,

*Unit III, Cheese - 8 cheese sticks or 8 orange cheese cookies,

*Unit IV, Cultured Dairy - One loaf Yogurt Potato Bread,

*Unit V, Advanced Dairy Foods - One Butter Cake (make icing with water instead

of milk),

DOG PROJECT : Exhibit the completed project book, (include a picture of your dog) and a poster on dogs. This poster should be no smaller than 20” x 30” and no larger than 24” x 30”, use matt board or foam cord board, no poster board is allowed. Copyrighted characters are not permitted. This poster should promote a breed, showing/grooming/caring for your dog, dog health, nutrition, and breed characteristics. Posters should be simple and focus on one message to tell your story of your dog poster theme. No 3 dimensional posters are permitted.

ELECTRIC: 4-H members enrolled in Electric Project may bring one or more items they have made to the Community Fair and place them on exhibit, following the guidelines listed below. Please label each item.

Unit I Magic of Electricity (All exhibits must be DC powered.)

645 Battery powered series and parallel circuits (Circuits must include both series and parallel, a simple switch and can be no more than 9 volts). 646 Homemade Galvanometer (Must be able to detect the presence of an electrical current). 647 Electromagnetic circuits (Must be a working electromagnet with a simple switch and can be no more than 9 volts). 648 Simple homemade DC motor (Rotor must turn under its’ own power).

Unit II Investigating Electric (All exhibits must be DC powered.) 649 Battery powered series or parallel circuit (circuit may be either series or parallel, must contain either a momentary and /or three way switch, a circuit diagram with explanation and can be no more than 9 volts). 650 An original design soldered circuit project (Circuit must contain an on/off switch, a motion tilt activated switch, a light and sound producing device and must be powered by 9 volts. All connections in the circuit must be soldered and a circuit diagram with explanation must be included).

Electricity III Wired for Power 651 Exhibit a display of wire sizes and types with description and example of usage (display must contain at least 12 different examples). 652 Simple household or farm use circuit according to the directions in the project book. 653 Exhibit a complex household or farm use circuit according to the directions in the project book. 654 Table, desk, vanity or floor lamp (any purpose – original design only); pop can lamp kits will be disqualified. Class 655: Basic electronic circuits without solid state components from project book. Class 656: Basic electronic circuits with solid state components from a kit. Class 657: Basic electronic circuits with solid state components, original circuit design. GREEN ENERGY: 658: Wind or solar powered energy project (from a kit) 659: Wind or solar powered energy project (original design)

ENERGY - 4-H members enrolled in Energy Projects are required to do the following in order to exhibit an energy project at the 4-H Fair.. Make a poster on the theme of “Ways to Conserve Energy in My Home or Community”; this should be 14 x 22 inches (one half sheet standard poster board). Name, school and grade of 4-H members should be on back of poster. (*Poster is eligible for the Kentucky State Fair.)

Energy I- Neatly complete the project book in one color ink or pencil.

Energy II- Complete the project book.

Energy III- Complete the project book.

ENTOMOLOGY: (Pins and boxes may be purchased from the Extension Office.) All 4-H members who are enrolled in the Entomology Project may exhibit their insect collections as follows:

*Entomology I - Exhibit one or two 9” x 13” cardboard collection boxes with at least

25 insects from at least four orders, mounted and labeled according to directions in the project book. All specimens must have date and place found. Identification beyond order not necessary. Maximum 50 insects.

*Entomology II - Exhibit two 9” x 13” cardboard collection boxes with at least 50

insects from eight orders. Half of the insects should be identified with a common name. Maximum 100 insects.

*Entomology III - Exhibit two –three 9” x 13” cardboard collection boxes with 100

insects from at least 10 orders. Maximum 150 insects.

*Entomology IV - Three 9” x 13” cardboard collection boxes with a minimum of 12

orders and 150 insects. No maximum. A 3rd box with an example of insect damage, the stage of the insect causing the damage and any other stage of the insect that helps identify the problem. Include information in the display that tells how the insect is controlled. Life cycle of two insects may be displayed, if desired.

FLOWER ARRANGING - Exhibit a silk or dried flower arrangement that you have made using the designs and information in the project book.

FORESTRY: All 4-H members enrolled in the Forestry Project may exhibit leaf collections. The collection should be bound together, such as in a scrapbook or loose-leaf notebook, and the leaves should be mounted, one on each page, and labeled.

*Forestry I - Exhibit one of the following:

1. Collection of 10 leaves representing 10 forest trees found in Kentucky. Each leaf should be correctly identified and placed in a photograph album. 2. A collection of 10 leaf prints representing 10 forest trees found in Kentucky. Each leaf print should be correctly identified and placed in a photograph album.

*Forestry II - Exhibit one of the following:

1. Leaf Collection - 2nd year collection of 20 different leaves representing 20 forest trees different from ones done in Unit I. Each leaf should be correctly identified or develop an educational exhibit utilizing any kind of technique. The exhibit should be four square feet.

PAID FOR BY RAY JONES. THIS IS AN ADVERTISEMENT.

GEOLOGY: 4-H members enrolled in the Geology Projects may exhibit a collection that they have arranged during the school year. Each specimen must be correctly identified and labeled. Labels are available through the Cooperative Extension Service Office (or the 4-H Office). (Fossils and rocks may be mixed.) Mount in a 16x20 box with plexiglas cover that can be removed for judging.

*Geology I - A collection of 15 fossils or 15 rocks and minerals. Up to 20 specimens will be accepted.

*Geology II - A collection consisting of 25 specimens of rocks and minerals and fossils that you have correctly identified and displayed. Twelve may be from previous years. (no more than two boxes)

*Geology III - A collection consisting of 35 specimens (no more than two boxes). Seventeen may be from previous years.

*Geology IV - A collection of 50 specimens (no more than two boxes). Twenty-five may be from previous years.

HOME ENVIRONMENT:

*Home Environment I - 4-H members enrolled in this project may exhibit one of the following items:

1. Color Collage - This must be attached to a mat or foam core board.

2. Texture Collage or Rubbing - select from activity in the project book. The collage must be attached to a mat or foam core board.

3. Exhiibit a small wood object with a natural finish such as tung oil or penetrating seal applied to small wood object. Examples include bowl, tray, cutting board, game board, and small box. Judging will be on the finish not the construction.

4. Simple, small cloth item for the home. Examples include knotted pillow, draped valance and placemats with accompanying photo showing end result.

5. Wastebasket that you have decorated.

6. Pin-up board (Bulletin)

*Home Environment II - 4-H members enrolled in this project may exhibit one of the

following items: 1. Simple, small cloth item using a sewing machine. Examples include hemmed table cloth or table runner, wall hanging, pillow case, throw, embellished towels, shower curtain, chair covers, laundry bag, pet bed, valance and curtains. (No purses, tote bags, backpack or duffle bags.)

2. A refinished wood item with straight lines with little or no carving or turnings. This item might be a small footstool, a child’s furniture, a small box, picture frame, book shelves or a plant stand. Exhibit should include before and after pictures.

3. Invitation and thank you notes. Design an invitation and thank you letter notes for a sleep-over, birthday party or other occasion of your choice. Computer software may be used or it may be hand written. Decorations should be 4-H members’ original art work. The message is the most important part of the exhibit.

*Home Environment III - Exhibit one of the following:

1. Restore or refinish a wood item or recycle a low cost item. Include a before picture with your exhibit, if possible to let other people know what the item looked like before you refinished or recycled it. (Examples: rocker, table, large chair or chest)

2. Exhibit a table setting to include centerpiece, plate, glass, cup, saucer and table linen. It should be planned around a theme or event chosen by 4-H member. This exhibit will require two parts. Second, include a diagram or photo how it will be used in the home. No silverware, please.

3. Accessory for the home with description, sketch, or photo to show how the accessory is used in the home and how the design and colors fit in with the other furnishings and color used in the home. Examples include stitchery or appliqué wall hanging, latch hook items, pillow with applied design (stitchery, appliqué or other media), rug, picture in appropriate frame and ready to hang. 4. Exhibit a old or discarded item made useful in a new way as a home accessory. It is made up of two parts, the accessory and a folder with documentation. This should include a before and after photograph. (Examples, old silverware made into wind chimes, scrapwood pieces made into wall art, lace doily attached to a pillow or framed.)

HORSE There are many ways that you can exhibit projects concerning horses. Listed below are these project. Projects that are county winners in this category will represent our county in the competition in June. New! HORSE CRAFTS: Four 4-H members may exhibit their talent by exhibiting horse craft items. You may exhibit a least one neatly completed item in the following. Art Kit—exhibit a completed art kit that is related to horses; this should be neatly completed. Art Non-KIT– exhibit a piece of art that you have completed related to horses. Clothing– Exhibit a piece of clothing that you have made that is related to or displays horses. Horse Equipment– Exhibit a piece of equipment that you have made for your horse.

HORSE There are many ways that you can exhibit projects concerning horses. Listed below are these projects.

Horse for the Non-horse Owner - Exhibit a neatly completed project book.

All blanks should be completed.

Horse Photography Single - Exhibit a 8”x10” photograph related to horses.

Mount this on a poster board (10’x16’).

Horse Photography Series - Exhibit a series of five photographs related to

horses; these photographs should be 3½”x 5” and mounted on poster board 16”x20”.

Horse Project - Exhibit the neatly completed project book on your horse. All

blanks should be completed.

Horse Speech - Present a speech on horses. This speech should be three to

five minutes in length. 4-H SPECIAL COLLECTIONS 4-H Cake Decorating

1. Entry consists of a decorated cake.

2. Judging is based on decoration only not taste.

3. Exhibit is not limited to a color or design.

4. Refrigeration will NOT be provided.

5. Exhibit must be limited in size to no taller than 24” and no more than ½ sheet

board.

6. 4-H identification cards must be attached to bottom right hand corner of sheet

board.

7. Cake must include the 4-H Clover either in design or decoration.

Clover Photography 1. Subject of photograph must include 4-leaf clover. (Photographs of 3-leaf clovers will NOT be accepted.) 2. 4-leaf clover may be real or created. 3. Photograph may be color or black and white. 4. Follow all mounting rules described in the Cloverville Photography division. 5. Maximum photograph size 8” X 12”. 1010 Junior Clover Photograph 1011 Senior Clover Photograph * DUCT TAPE PROJECT Any project, fashion, crafts or anything else made using duct tape. This project must be made of at least 90% duct tape. Items will be judged on creativity, design, quality, and use. For exam-ple a purse with matching wallet all constructed of duct tape. Entries are limited to one entry per class per county. 1020 Junior (Grades 4-8) Duct Tape Project 1021 Senior (Grades 9-12) Duct Tape Project RECORDING HISTORY 1. Judging criteria will be based on implementation of the 4-H theme. 4-H historical content, poster design, (lettering, attractiveness, how well it conveys the message.) As well as the effec-tiveness of the poster to promote 4-H. 2. Exhibit must be completed on a standard full size foam core board. 3. Posters may not include items or embellishments that make the poster 3-dimenstional. 4. Any use of the 4-H Clover must adhere to the standards and guidelines of the registered 4-H clover. 5. Any color foam core board is acceptable. 1040 Junior 4-H Historical Poster 1041 Senior 4-H Historical Poster UPCYCLING PROJECT Upcycling is taking something that you are throwing away and making it into something that maintains or improves the quality of the materials. Example: There are coin purses made from sweaters, earrings cut out of vinyl records and an old travel case made into a clock. The de-signs will be judged on quality, use, and creativity. HORTICULTURE PROJECTS: All plants except for desert dish must be grown in potting soil.

*Desert Dish Garden - 4-H members enrolled in the Desert Dish Garden Project

may exhibit a dish garden with at least three types of desert or tropical plants.

*Hanging Baskets - Exhibit a healthy hanging basket of flowers you have grown.

Houseplants - Start two plants by methods described in the project book and exhibit the new plants at the 4-H Fair. *Terrarium - 4-H members enrolled in the Terrarium Project may exhibit a terrarium made this year. Terrariums should include healthy house or woodland plants. Only potting soil should be used. *Vegetable Bucket Garden - Exhibit a healthy vegetable that you have grown in a bucket; this should not be dug out of the garden. *Horticulture Project Exhibits - Exhibit a horticulture project that you have completed this year. This should be mounted on a board and must include pictures or drawing. This project includes but is not limited to How to Propagate Plants, How To Force Spring Bulbs, How To Start Seeds, How To Dry Herbs, How to Graft Cacti, etc.

NEEDLEWORK: 4-H members may exhibit items that they have made during the 2015-2016 school year from the following list.

CROCHETING: 4-H members enrolled in Crocheting Projects may exhibit items they have made, as follows: 813: Crochet I– Exhibit one more Items made of medium weight yarn and single and/or doubled crochet stitches: Examples of exhibits includes : scarf, purse ,belt , hat, pillow, two wash cloths (made from cotton yarn), afghan, shawl,

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Any boy or girl age 9-19 (must have passed their 9th birthday but have not passed their 19th birthday as of January 1 of the current program year) may participate in the 4-H Public Speaking (Talk Program) on a county basis. SENIORS must have passed their 14th birthday but not their 19th birthday as of January 1 of the current year. Junior category is judged in the 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 year old category; the age the 4-H member is as of January 1, of 2014 is the age 4-H members will be placed for competition. Senior young men and women will be judged in the 14, 15 and 16-19 year old category; the age the 4-H member is of January 1, 2016 is the age 4-H members will be placed for competition. 1. Junior speeches should be three to five minutes in length. 2. Senior speeches should be five to seven minutes in length.

3. A participant may secure assistance from anyone he or she chooses in writing and preparing a speech.

4. Note cards may be used.

Speakers should do the following: A. Use good sentence structure, pronounce words clearly and correctly. Exercise good voice control. B. Dress neatly, smile, stand quietly and have good posture. C. The speech should be logical. D. Learn the speech well enough to speak with confidence. E. Speak to the audience. F. Never say thank-you at the end. G. No visual aids will be used in the Kentucky 4-H Public Speaking (Talk Meet). Costumes (special outfits) and/or electronic equipment are considered visual aids. H. The use of note cards is optional. Points will not be added or subtracted for the use of note cards unless the speaker uses them in a distracting manner. I. Dramatic readings, dramatic monologues and recitation of poems (as the entire speech) including web based information will not be accepted in the Public Speaking (4-H Talk Meet). Excessive or distracting body or hand gestures are unacceptable. These distractions will be counted against participant in the scoring section. J. The contestant will be introduced by name, and subject (title) by the room host when she/he will present their talk. Talk should not include the speaker's name or residence; however there will be no penalty if name, county, and subject (title) are used during the talk.

DEMONSTRATION

Junior Demonstrations: Any member age 9-13 may compete in Junior Demonstrations as per their age determined on January 1st of the year in which the state contest is held. Senior Demonstrations: Any member age 14-19 may participate in Senior Demonstration (must have passed their 14th birthday but have not passed their 19th birthday as of January1st of the year in which the state their event contest is held). 1) Time limit for project demonstrations will be 5-15 minutes. (INCLUDING BREADS) Demonstrations going under or over time will be assessed a 3 point penalty from their overall final score and be given a blue, red or white ribbon and WILL be eligible for Champion placement. 2) A participant may have help with practicing the demonstration or speech. Preparation may include practicing in front of peers, club leaders, etc. At the SENIOR LEVEL, the 4-H’er is expected to demonstrate original work – choosing a topic, researching it and writing their own speech or demonstration. The internet may be used as a reference source but NOT as a source for a non-original speech or demonstration. 3) Team demonstrations ARE permitted. They will follow the same rules and regulations of the single participant demonstrations. Two (2) 4-H members will comprise a team. Each person must have a significant speaking and presentation portion. 4) A 4-H’er need not be enrolled in a project to give a demonstration; however, they should be encouraged to use demonstrations as an educational tool in their project area.

Recipes for 4-H Exhibits Food & Food Preservation Divisions The Fantastic Foods project series has four levels. During a program year, a member should work in one project level, learning all the skills in that level before moving to anoth-er level. For competition, it is important to read and follow the recipe exactly to produce a high quality product.

Each participant must have a significant speaking AND presentation role in the demonstration. Youth may participate in either the individual demonstrations OR the team demonstration category. They may NOT do both. MOCK JOB INTERVIEWS -Seniors (14-18) only. Resumes are not currently required, but are encouraged. Contestants will be applying for a sales associate position at a mall. The interview will be conducted in a private room with two judges and should last 8 – 10 minutes.

VARIETY SHOW RULES

1. Only one person other than 4-H participants, such as a pianist, may accompany the act. 2. Only 4-H participants may appear on the stage during the act. 3. Specialty Acts shall consist of four 4-H participants or fewer and have a time limit of four minutes. 4. The time limit for the Club Act is eight minutes. A. There is no upper limit on the number of 4-H participants from a club who can participate. 5. Dramatic readings can be entered as a Variety Show competition. 6. No lip-syncing of songs will be considered for championship.
