The impetus for my newest line for Skram is a desire to design for an audience of people like myself. I am someone who views good design an essential part of healthy living. I shy away from disposable goods and seek out objects that reflect the belief that enduringly good design cannot exist apart from quality. And like most of us, I am someone who must balance these criteria against economic factors.
So, in assessing what kind of furniture I would buy, the question became: if my house wasn’t filled with Skram prototypes, would I be able to find items that met my functional and aesthetic expectations and were also affordable?
The answer was clear: Most of the furnishings that I saw lacked either design integrity or workmanship or were beyond my means. I decided to create a new collection, called Piedmont, to fill this void.
Six basic considerations shaped the line: form, function, construction, material, sustainability, and cost. All of these factors also inform my other designs, but this is Skram’s first grouping to make such a priority of lower prices, which are achieved by limiting material and size options. Thus Piedmont is standardized in size and presented in two materials—ebonized rift white oak and cherry.
Several additional features were essential. Beyond the spare but welcoming visual presentation that defines the Skram aesthetic, the new range was to be well-conceived in every detail, with everyday functionality of principal importance. It would be solidly built, making use of traditional woodworking joinery—sliding dovetails and mortise-and-tenon joints—and solid timber for its construction. And finally, the collection would be ecologically responsible—made with FSC certified materials and non-toxic adhesives and finishes.
The following pages highlight the initial release of Piedmont, consisting of occasional tables and other items for the living room and public spaces. Coming months will see the expansion of the range to
include furniture for the dining room, bedroom, and office. Following through on the basic premise of the collection, this furniture was photographed in my own living room, just miles away from the Skram workshop in North Carolina’s wooded, rolling Piedmont region, where the collection is made, start-to-finish.

Standard color options for woven chair seats are as follows: black, tan, or butternut. Chairs also available with leather sling seat (not-pictured) in the following colors: black, tan, or chestnut. Contact Skram for custom options.
Standard color options for metalwork are as follows: black, white, tan, or blue. Contact Skram for custom options. Sheen is gloss.
Wood finishes are commercial grade, non-toxic water-based polyurethane. Sheen is flat.
Drawers ride on concealed, soft-closing runners. Drawer pulls are integral.
