Pieces & Patches Quilt Guild
Vol 39 Issue 3 Jackson, Michigan August, 2019
From the President
Well my year is almost
to an end, looking back I
wish our weather for
November and January
would have been better
but we did have two
meetings in
February! We lost some
members and gained
some; I see lots of new enthusiasm among the
newbies!
My push was to have workshops for making our
charities quilts, we had 3 for veterans and 3 for
together we make a difference, less than 10% of the
guild participated. I was disappointed with the
turnout and have tried to do some soul searching to
figure out why. Was it the day (we had one on a
Saturday), the time, place or was it me? I believe in
giving and I know when I do, I receive tenfold. So,
was it the charities the guild chose? I love veterans,
kids, girls and dogs; are we to spread out with our
charities? We need to talk about this for the next
year when we will be voting on them. In the
meantime, many of you use your talents for quilts to
be raffled off, other charities, for hospice, and other
non-profits. No matter who you are giving to, show
us at the end of the meeting as I would love to have
it acknowledged!
As you know, our Executive committee has changed
and you are always welcome to come to the meetings
on the second Wednesday of the month at the west
end Meijer Branch Library. The guild is about us
and how we can share our desire in promoting the art
of quilting.
I am so proud that in August eight of our members
will have their challenge quilts from 2018 at AQS in
Grand Rapids. This is a great honor for our guild,
and I hope you all can make it up there!
I challenge each one of you to try something new in
quilting, take workshops, join a committee, volunteer
to make our quilt guild the best it can be for you and
me…
Thank you for allowing me to be your President and
to grow in loving quilting!
Janet Rochefort

Where: Jackson’s Country
Stitches
Time: 9:00am until 4:00pm.
Attendees: 30 Total
Charge: $10.00
It is still summer, so is anyone thinking about the
School Bell Quilt In? I am! Cheri Pickett, Pat
Sweet and I have some wonderful opportunities for
Guild members to learn new techniques or improve
on old ones in September. Pat Sweet has promised
to show us how easy it is to miter the borders on our
quilts. Cheri Pickett has told me that mitered
borders are really wonderful when making a
scalloped border and she is going to show us how to
make them so that they will fit both small and large
quilts. We will also learn how to make a prairie
point border. Come and learn these exciting new
techniques to enhance your borders.

During “school” we will learn some “quilter’s math”
to enable us to resize blocks so we can create a quilt
the specific size that we need. The ideas that we can
use these techniques on are endless. And, if any of
you have been to a School Bell before, you know
there will be prizes, a pot luck luncheon, open
sewing and a chance to sew with friends and make
new ones. Where else would you meet someone
who understands the need to “pet” fabric? Don’t
miss out on the fun!
In July and August there will be demos and samples
at the Guild meetings of what we will be doing. So,
plan on setting aside Saturday, September 21 to
participate in the fun at Country Stitches from 9am-
4pm. The cost will be $10. I plan on seeing you
there.

Meet Your Executive Board
for 2019-2020
President, Carol Metz
I used to sew in high school. My
cousin and I would challenge each
other to see who could make the
craziest outfits. That same cousin
made my grandson a quilt when he
was born eight years ago. I just loved it and I asked
her if she thought I could quilt. As with any quilter “of
course you can” was the answer.
I used to golf with Marilyn Zimmer. She invited me
to one of the guild meetings. I attended a couple and
then my husband passed away so I backed away from
a lot of things. I rejoined the guild about three years
ago and became a board member because they needed
help.
My answer as to what I enjoy most about the guild
would have been totally different one month ago than
what it is today. The people that I have met and the
friendships that have developed and are beginning to
develop more deeply is something that has been an
incredible surprise to me, and one that makes me very
grateful. At first, I thought the groups were extremely
cliquey and to wiggle your way in was kind of hard.
But I have found with a little bit of effort, our
members are open, willing to help, fully accepting,
extremely kind and a great deal of fun.
We are now at a point in life where we cheer each
other with kindness and laughter. I have received

that gift from the Guild over the past month and I
thank all of you who have participated in that. I am
deeply and greatly appreciative of all of you.
I enjoy piecing, appliqué, Embroidery, and was so
looking forward to our paper piecing workshop in
August. I’ve not had the courage to try paper
piecing on my own as it looks rather intimidating
and I feel I will need a great deal of supervision and
help.
I have two favorite tools in my sewing room. The
first is correct sewing machine foot for the current
project. The second would be quilting gloves with
the sticker grips. It is so much easier to bind and
handle the material as the quilt gets larger and
requires more maneuvering. Piece on Earth.
Vice President,
Cathey Newhouse I’ve been quilting since age
10, but have known what I was
doing for maybe the last 22
years. I like all types of
quilting and I would say my
favorite is the one I’m working on when you ask.
I joined the guild about 1999 because I wanted to learn
more and because I wanted to meet more quilters. My
favorite things about the guild are workshops, retreats,
and show and tell. I became a board member because
I wanted to help.
My favorite quilting tool is my sewing machine.😊
My best quilting tip is to keep on trying new things
and to have confidence.
Corresponding
Secretary,
Chris Carothers I've been quilting for around 20
years. My favorite thing about
quilting is playing with different
color fabrics and being amazed at what looks good
together. Also, I love applique.
The guild is a great place to make friends with
people who have a love for quilting. I have made
many friends and hope to make many more.

Chris has served the Guild in many functions
including having been President and continues to
work hard to make the Quilt Retreats successful.
Recording Secretary,
Elizabeth Hewett My Grandma Rose taught me to
embroider when I was 4 and I have been
doing some kind of needlework ever
since. I joined the Guild because of the
Quilt Show and Show n’ Tell in 2004. This is my
favorite part of the Guild. It gives me joy to see what
others have created and the different techniques that
are used.
Because I wanted to know how things were done, I
worked with hospitality when I joined the Guild so I
could meet and know others in the Guild. Then I
joined a Sit n’ Stitch and was wowed by this group. I
volunteered to be Quilt Show Co-Chairman with
Mary Ward and after she passed away, Chairman.
When it was announced that the Nominating
Committee couldn’t find someone willing to be
Recording Secretary, I added it to my plate. Not only
did I meet new people I made new friends. In
addition, everything I have done for the Guild has
taught me skills that have helped me to earn major
promotions for my job.
I enjoy paper piecing, although the first couple of
times I did it I thought whoever dreamed this up had
way too much time on their hands! My favorite type
of quilting is to take simple blocks and combine them
to make complicated patterns. For me, this is therapy.
My favorite quilting tool is a notebook with quilting
tips on “quilter’s math”, re-sizing blocks, caring for
my tools, and how-to instructions. I keep a photo
album with completed projects that include the pattern
name, fabric names and where I purchased the
materials. And last, I keep a computer file with my
favorite websites and another for free patterns that I
have downloaded.
My favorite quilting tip is to attend demonstrations,
School Bell and the workshops. Someone else has
figured things out or they may have an easier way to
do something. Guild demonstrations are free and the
cost of the School Bell is minimal. The workshops
are hands on learning, and reasonably priced based on
the value our instructors provide. Both the School
Bell and the workshops are a great place to try

something new without a big commitment. You can
discuss ideas, solutions to problems, and make friends
who have the same interest as you do and won’t be
calling your craft “a little hobby”.
Treasurer, Janice Stitt I started sewing at age 10 when I
joined 4H and have been
involved in some form of
needlework ever since; garment
construction, home decor,
embroidery, counted cross
stitch. I made my first quilt in 1971 while expecting
my baby (very comical results, didn’t know what I
was doing). Nearly 30 years later I began quilting in
earnest.
My Favorite types of quilting are paper piecing (for
its precision) and art quilting (for the creative, no-
rules apply). However, I appreciate all types of
quilting and love to learn new techniques.
I joined the Guild in 2009 because I wanted to learn
more about quilting from others that were more
advanced and skilled in the art. I was asked by a
member of the nominating committee to serve on the
executive board. I felt that I had certain business and
managerial experiences that might be of benefit to the
Guild and I have always believed that “the more you
put into something, the more you will get out of
it.”
Today, my favorite thing about the Guild is the
fellowship and the friendships I have developed over
the years. My favorite quilting tools are tweezers and
small thread snips at my machine all the time and
Aurifil 50 weight thread for piecing.
As far as quilting tips go, use the best quality fabric
that you can afford. So much time and work is
invested in a quilt, why not invest in good fabrics at
the get-go so your work will hold up and last a long
time. Director of
Communications,
Karen Prater Creating art quilts is definitely
my favorite type of quilting
because I love the creativity
and freedom as well as the lack of tiny precision

points which I have never been able to master to my
satisfaction. I love experimenting with dyes, new
types of fabrics and embellishments to create unique
quilts.
My favorite thing about the guild is the comradery,
encouragement and support of the guild members.
While I have been sewing for many years, quilting is
quite new to me. Seeing the level of expertise and
amazing skills of our members is inspiring and
provides the motivation I need to keep improving my
own quilting skills.
I became an Executive Board member because I have
been very impressed with the dedication, commitment
and knowledge of the executive board. As a new
board member, I hope I can help to carry on their
ongoing tradition of trying to make this guild bigger
and better every year.
What is your favorite quilting tool? I am glad I wasn’t
asked which tool was most used, that might be the
seam ripper.
Director of
Community
Outreach,
LuAnn Hammond I like fast, simple quilts.
I joined the Guild in 2015 at the
invitation of my neighbor Celia
Moffit, and her daughters, Pamela Reinker and
Rayette Rouff. I became a member of the Executive
Board because I was asked by another Executive
Board Member.
My favorite thing about the Guild is the
demonstrations. My favorite tool is the rotary cutter
and my favorite tip is that nothing is perfect.
Director at Large,
Cynthia Shong
I started sewing when I was 12
or 13 years old and began
quilting sometime in the 90’s. I
enjoy making quilts.

I joined the Guild about 5 or 6 years ago because I
wanted to be able to spend time with other
quilters. The Guild allows me to do that through the
workshops and the lectures. You really get to know
people when you work together on charity projects. I
also decided to become involved with the Executive
Board so that I can be more involved with other
quilters.
My favorite quilting tool is the fast2cut Bonnie K.
Hunter's Essential Triangle Tool and the rotary
cutter. If I could only share one quilting tip it is to
measure twice and cut once.
Immediate Past
President,
Janet Rochefort I began sewing when I was
very young, and I use to
make all of my clothes,
including coats and hats. I
started quilting over 40 years ago. I got into quilting
heavily when I started coming to the guild 19 years
ago.
My favorite type of quilting is out of the box
quilting, doing my own thing, and not following
others directions.
I joined the Guild about 14 years ago. I joined
because everyone that I met at the Inn was very
friendly and willing to help one another ...most of
my friends today came from the guild.
My favorite thing about the Guild is the people and
their willingness to help one another and in that spirit
of helping, I became an Executive Board member as
a way to give back what has been given to me.
My favorite quilting tools are a ruler and scissors.
My number one quilting tip that I believe in
following is press, press, and press.

Charities Update
Together We Can Make a Difference is in need of
baby quilts. If you can make a baby quilt
(approximately 36"x54") and donate it to the charity
that would very much appreciated. If you have
fabric or batting to donate, please consider doing that
too. Please see Dianne Stevens if you have
questions.
Cage Comforters - Cats and dogs always love a
comfy bed. The size for a cat bed is 23" square, and
23"×47" for dogs. They don't have to match or be
made perfect, and it's a good time to practice your
free motion quilting. They are donated to the
Jackson County Animal Shelter. If you have fabric
or batting to donate, that would be greatly
appreciated. See Janice Stitt if you have questions.
Days for Girls make period pads for young girls in
underdeveloped, third world countries. These
include cotton shields with a waterproof layer,
flannel cotton liners, underwear, a washcloth and
soap are all packed into a drawstring bag. If you
have any prewashed flannel (6" or 9"), prewashed
darker cotton WOF 10" strips, or WOF 12" colorful
fabric for the bags that you can donate, it would be
appreciated. Please see Becky Kopicko if you have
questions.
Veterans of Jackson makes quilts for our local
Veterans. They could use donated fabrics in red,
white, and blue, and also batting. Please see Elvia
Shirkey, if you have questions or donations.
And time… If you have time to donate to any of the
Charities to help make that product, please see the
Chairperson to make arrangements.
Thank you for supporting our Charities.

up. With over 160 members, I truly believe we can
make this the best ever. Remember this is YOUR
Quilt Show, it is up to all of you to make it shine!
September will also kick off our Raffle Ticket sales
and our reveal of the (2) quilts we will be giving
away. We really want to impress on our members
the importance of being responsible for at least one
packet of tickets (either selling or buying that first
packet). Of course, we sure would like all of you to
sell more than you thought possible!
As in the past, we will also be collecting Fat
Quarters for the Cafe, items to sell in the General
Store and quality items for the Silent Auction. See
Karri Howe for the Silent Auction and Sandy Myers
or Betty Lorenzi for the General Store. Donation
bins will be set out at Guild Meetings starting in
September.
Last but not least, please be sure to enter a quilt or
two! Let's blow away the competition and have an
abundance of quilts to see. Our Show & Tells make
it well known that we have so much talent to show
and share with all who attend the Quilt Show!

President’s Block
One of the Guild’s best traditions is to say “thank
you” to the outgoing President for serving the guild
as the President for the current year. And don’t
forget that one serves as an officer for multiple years
prior to becoming President! The way we say thanks
is to make a quilt block in accordance with the
President’s wishes. Making a block is optional, but
if you are inspired to follow this tradition Janet
would like 9 ½” x 9 ½” Unfinished Block with a
Tree. Use your imagination or find a block that you
like with a tree – any kind of tree. This can be
pieced, appliqued, paper-pieced or any combination.
I found a block and will give instructions below.
Please share ideas with each other and be creative to
make this fun for Janet. If you have learned other
techniques such as thread painting include that as
well. Blocks are presented to the President at the
September guild meeting.
This block is a Pine Tree Block found on Quilting
Assistant.com. Choose a background fabric, three
green fabrics and brown fabric or ribbon for the
trunk.
From the background fabric cut:
1 Square 5 3/8” x 5 3/8”
2 Square 2” x 2”
2 Rectangle 2” x 3 ½”
From three shades of green cut:
1 2” x 5”
1 2” x 6 ½”
Start with the trunk unit. Cut the 5 3/8” x
5 3/8” unit into two half squares. Apply
a brown strip of fabric or grosgrain
ribbon by applique and stitch down.
Then stitch half square triangles back
together using a ¼” seam. Open unit and
press. Your unit should look like this:
Next take darkest shade of green
rectangles and stitch 2” x 5” to right side
of unit. Press seam to the dark fabric
then stitch 2” x 6 ½” rectangle to the top
of unit. Your unit should look like this:
