ALLEY WELCOME TO MUNISING Nestled within glacier-formed hills on the southern shore of Lake Superior, Munising is well endowed- with prime, scenic snowmobile-trails. Well over 200 inches of snow blankets the area annually, one important reason for Munising's popularity as a winter sports mecca. Abundant snow, combined with winter temperatures moderated by the influence of the Great Lakes, makes winter here everything a snowmobiler seeks. Scenic forests of hardwoods and spruce/fir trees add character to the area's numerous groomed trails, and the additional attractions of quiet streams, isolated lakes and awesome glacial formations along the way make the setting all the more beautiful under a cover of sparkling snow. Winter brings adventure as well as solitude on Munising's hundreds of miles of exciting snowmobile routes. Miles and miles of wilderness trails following old logging roads and pathways beckon the snowmobiler seeking the beauty and solitude of the great northwoods. Map and compass are all that are needed to explore the vast lands of the Hiawatha National Forest and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The Ice Caves along the shores of Grand Island provide an outing of spectacular beauty. Snowmobil- ers are cautioned, however, to check ice conditions with local law enforcement agencies before crossing the bay. Plowed county roads are intended to be used to gain access to or from trails and lodging, restaurants, gas, etc. Keep to the extreme right, single file and do not exceed 30 MPH. Some roads may be temporarily posted closed for your safety. OTHER AREAS OF OPERATION A person may not operate a snowmobile: • On a railroad or railroad right-at-way. • In or across a cemetery or burial ground. • On a state highway or street. • On roads posted as "Private Property" or "No Trespassing." • On toot trails within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or on National Forest trails that have been designated for non-motorized uses such as skiing or hiking. WELCOME TO MUNISING. Have a safe and pleasant visit! Dear snowmobiler: Welcome to the Munising area. We want your stay to be an enjoyable one. If there is anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable please ask. The Munising area is usually a quiet family area. Most folks in the area work shift work as our largest employers run twenty-four hour operations. This means that there is always someone sleeping somewhere. We ask you to think of these people going to and returning from the trail. Keep speeds down so as not to create any unnecessary noise. In the past few years we have been expanding our trail network so that many popular attractions may be visited without riding on a plowed road. Miners Castle and Munising Bay among them. Please use our trail system form your snowmobil- ing. The streets you will be riding to access the trail network or various services (this is the only reason you should be riding them) have many young children living near them. Please be careful and go slow as they may not always take the time to look for you. Country roads have a 30 MPH speed limit that is strictly enforced. The use of roads and streets is a privilege that may be taken from us if we do not use them carefully. You may not ride the plowed portion of any state (M) highway. When riding country roads stay on the right and obey snowmobile speed signs. When riding the city streets, ride single file on the right side at 10 mph. Do not ride in people’s yards or cut across corners, stay on the road. Riding on people’s private property is trespassing with fines up to $ 500.00! Please remember to only ride on roads and streets to gain access to a trail, ride single file, keep the speed down and do not trespass. If you are in violation, and stopped you can be sure of a substantial fine and a pretty good look at you and your machine. The purpose of this notice is not to throw a wet blanket on your fun, but rather, let those few that would ruin it for the rest of us know that we are tired of them ruining our sport. This is why we will be asking the police to help us keep our sport by cracking down on the outlaws. You are not welcome here if you cannot respect our neighbors property or if you think you left all laws and common sense at home and this is where you “run free”. The Munising Visitors Bureau welcomes you to the Alger County Area. Enjoy the Many trails and services the county offers... good riding, and have a safe trip home! NOTE: No Motorized travel in wilderness area year around, includes snowmobiles and ATV’s of any type. This regulation is strictly enforced. “Operating a machine after drinking and at excess speed can kill.” “Slow Down” on trails - especially on those with which the operator is unfamiliar.
