Swiss Cities at 2010 Shanghai World Expo

At Shanghai Expo 2010, Pico partnered a leading Swiss event company,

Rufner Events, in handling four official events for the Swiss Cities including

opening and closing ceremonies, Swiss Day and Cities Day.

To mark the opening of the Expo, each city’s pavilion invited stakeholders

to a ‘Plunge’ celebration. Those attending enjoyed an astonishing main

show about water from Madir Eugster plus continuous other entertainment

inside the pavilion itself.

Held at Padang on 9 August, this year National Day

Parade marked the 45th anniversary of Singapore’s

independence.

The theme ‘Live Our Dreams, Fly Our Flag’ was chosen

to engage and inspire Singaporeans to celebrate. It

symbolises Singaporeans’ collective national identity and

hope for a better future. The theme also mirrors the pride

Singaporean people feel for their country’s flag.

Having been involved with this hugely important national

event for many years now, Pico was honored to be appointed

once again to handle various essential arrangements. The

team was the official contractor for construction of the

seating galleries, stage sets, support towers/scaffolds and

sound control platforms. Key challenges faced included

allowing for wind shifts while constructing 17 temporary

supporting towers measuring 4m x 2m x 39m in height

on an open field.

2010 Singapore National Day Parade

To cool guests from the sun or shelter them from possible rain, several

large umbrellas were strategically located through the plaza on Cities

Day. Each umbrella came equipped with a loudspeaker and a MP3 player

broadcasting stories about water. Several times daily, visitors were also

invited to join a big water orchestra and simulate rain acoustically.

As the Swiss Day takes place during the hottest part of the summer, the

organiser’s Pico-designed pavilion invited visitors to step into and enjoy

fun while exploring a cool, water-filled world. The many different activities

on offer inside included an enchanting display from artist, Ted Scapa.

During October’s closing ceremony, stakeholders will come to celebrate

their shared success at the pavilion during Shanghai Expo. The centrepiece

of this final event will showcase an exhibition of all of the pavilion’s

activities during the event itself. There are ultimately so many happenings

to be featured that the activity will be stretched out over one to two

weeks. The exhibition will subsequently be moved to, and hosted by,

each of the cities highlighted.

Algeria, Cyprus and Jordan Pavilions Won Shanghai World Expo Awards

The Shanghai World Expo Awards Ceremony was held on Oct 30 2010. Pico’s clients: Algeria Pavilion, Cyprus Pavilion and Jordan Pavilion received

awards at the ceremony. The awards were decided by a nine-member international evaluation committee. Congratulations to Pico’s clients. Algeria

Pavilion and Cyprus Pavilion won the Gold and Silver medals for Theme Development in Category C and D respectively. Jordan Pavilion also won

the Bronze medal for the Creative Display in Category D.

The Theme Development Award evaluated a pavilion’s relevance to the Expo theme of “Better City, Better Life”, exhibition content, information in display,

educational value, solutions to sustainable urban development and innovation capabilities. The Creative Display Award mainly evaluated a pavilion’s

interior decoration, exhibited items and relevance to Expo 2010 theme “Better City, Better Life”. The World Expo Awards classified pavilions by their sizes

into four categories: A, B, C and D. For more details of the Awards, please refer to the website http://en.expo2010.cn/a/20101031/000010.htm

Baidu Showroom A leading online search engine for websites, audio files and images, Baidu’s

57 specialist services include Baidu Baike, an online collaboratively-built ency-

clopedia, plus a searchable keyword-based discussion forum.

Commissioned to design, build and project manage the client’s 99-sq.

m. multi-media showroom in Beijing, Pico was determined to underline

Baidu’s state-of-the-art credentials. To this end, the team used advanced

technologies such projection tellurions, multi-touch screens and LED real-

time video playback.

The design for this space was ultimately won by the Pico IES Group in

a pitch against several other leading international experiential marketing

companies. As a result of its successful co-operation on this project, Pico was

praised by Baidu CEO, Mr. Robin Li and more than 30 directors worldwide.

Now one of Baidu’s partners of choice, Pico is confident to develop a long

and successful relationship with the client.

Pico was recently commissioned to design and project manage a 400 sq. m.

Boeing Visitor Gallery in Beijing. To demonstrate Boeing’s experience

to visitors, our team converted an existing meeting room into a gallery.

In doing so, they carefully planned the space and even transformed an

outside corridor into an airport-style passenger tunnel leading to the

passenger-style cabin! Thanks to Pico’s ingenious decoration of the ceiling

with colorful LED light-tubes, visitors saw blue skies and white clouds

immediately before entering the passageway and moving into the

gallery itself. Inside, the Pico team used fish-shaped panels to showcase

visuals plus TVs and LEDs to broadcast Boeing corporate messages and

product information.

Boeing’s representative Li Qi said that he was very satisfied with the overall results.

2010 Singapore Garden Festival

Hong Kong Tourism Board at Russian 2010 Using 400 sq. m. of space, Hong Kong Tourism

Board (HKTB) successfully launched its latest

Russian promotion in early September at Mos-

cow’s famous Atrium Mall. Kicked off by Hong

Kong S.A.R. Chief Executive, Donald Tsang, and

various local VIP officials, the six-day event pro-

vided a wealth of travel information to Russians

keen to visit ‘Asia’s World City’.

To add to the ‘festive Hong Kong’ feel, HKTB’s

Pico-designed booth featured a specially-creat-

ed sparkling-lantern with eye-catching pictures.

Non-stop live activities such as a traditional Lion

Dance and recitals from famous pianist, Li Yun

Di, ensured the booth was always packed with

smiling visitors. In addition to booth design-

ing and building other one-stop services Pico

provided for the HKTB included event planning

and on-site management.

Asia’s premier horticultural event, the biennial

Singapore Garden Festival is the only regional

expo of its kind to showcase creations from

the world’s leading garden and floral designers.

Organised by the National Parks Board (NParks)

of Singapore, the 2010 event was held at Suntec

International Convention & Exhibition Centre.

A respected landscaping and floral design

industry specialist, NParks is renowned for

being highly service-oriented. Pico’s reputation

for providing design and event organisation

services of the highest order, allowed Pico to be

commissioned to work on the conceptualisation

and design for all special features areas.

Taking all aspects of the organiser and event

branding requirements into consideration, Pico’s

conceptual thinking was to place an emphasis

on using eco-friendly materials for the event.

This was achieved by using bamboo as part of

the display shelving as well as the use of recycled

materials for book shelving and wall display.

“Following the success of the 3rd Singapore

Garden Festival, I would like to express my

appreciation to Pico for its hard work, efficiency

and support. Please extend my gratitude to

your staff for their professionalism”, said Dr

Wong Wei Har, Director, Singapore Botanic

Gardens, Singapore Garden Festival, National

Parks Board.

2010 ITMA ASIA + CITME This June’s 2010 ITMA ASIA & CITME exhibition showcased an impressive

line up of the latest textile machinery and solutions at the Shanghai New

International Expo Centre. Covering over 100,000 sq. m. of floor space,

the event featured some 1,171 exhibitors from 28 countries and attracted

around 100,000 visitors during its five-day run.

Pico designed and built 130, 150 and 480 sq. m. booths for CCI, CHENGFU

and the world’s best-known textiles company, STAUBLI. Having worked

closely with both clients for several years, our teams successfully created

all wooden structures for CCI and a double-deck booth for STAUBLI that

met each company’s unique brand image needs. In addition to providing

design and build services, Pico also assisted STAUBLI in holding on-site

sales meetings, press conferences, catering and a post-show dinner event.

2010 Food TaipeiCombining Food Taipei, Foodtech and Taipei Pack, Taipei International

Food Show (TIFS) was first held in 1990 and is now one of Asia’s most

important specialist platforms of its kind. This year’s 20th Anniversary

show at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Hall attracted some 1,254 exhibitors

occupying 2,753 booths. In all, over 2,000 registered buyers and 50,000

visitors from all over the world came here to do business.

Pico played its part in the event’s success by providing special multi-

dimensional designs for six national pavilions and two commercial

clients. The more than 800 sq. m. of space we created for the show

included booths for Spain, France, Thailand, the Philippines, Brazil and

Macau. We also worked with H&C Food Industrial and Gourmet’s Partner.

Showcasing a vivid yellow and green design to represent the country’s

enthusiasm, Pico’s Thailand booth was a real event showstopper.

Demonstrating the fiery character of the Spanish, our predominantly red

pavilion for Spain proved equally impactful.

Singapore International Water Week is a global platform that brings

leading water solutions policymakers, industry leaders, experts and

practitioners together. Into its fourth year, the ultimate aim is to address

challenges, showcase technologies, discover opportunities and celebrate

achievements in the water world.

This year, Pico was appointed by Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB)

to design and build the biggest booth in the entire exhibition.

The challenge here was to tell a story in a totally new and captivating manner

to returning visitors from the previous three shows. The approach our

Singaporean colleagues eventually used was to present PUB’s achievement

in a report book format with chapters that unfolded as visitors ventured

deeper into the booth. Upon entering, people were guided through

successive ‘chapters’ highlighting new breakthroughs in innovation and

collaboration. Emerging from the core of the booth main tower signage

was a sculpted banderole – it’s powerful dynamic continuous undulating

design made maximum use of its surrounding and was a reflection of

PUB’s core activities.

All big baby product brands were out in force at this August’s 18th

International Baby and Children Products Expo in Hong Kong. A uniquely

ideal opportunity to catch the attention of both new Mums and pregnant

women in one. While exhibitors have developed strategies to attract

customers, our designers have gained insights about creating symbolic

booths to catch attendees’ attention. In 2010, Pico was once again

appointed as this event’s official contractor. Our team also created special

booths for leading brands such as Abbott, Huggies, Johnson’s Baby,

Nestle, Pampers and Wyeth, etc.

“Good job, Pico! This is the booth we‘ve been looking for”,

said Mr Pingo Luk of Abbott.

a love-letter and adorably cuddly dating-bears. Ultimately, Pico ensured

that ‘love’ was evident in everything from the venue. Pico not only

designed and built but also provided one-stop-event-management services

to L’Oreal at this event. Amazingly, despite all of the uncertainties involved

in a live show, the entire event was up and running in just a few hours!
