HIKINGHike over 15 miles of trails along dry ridges, lush hollows, old roadbeds, and lakeshores. See cemeteries and remnants of early settlements. Trails range from easy to very rugged. There are three hike-in backcountry campsites, which can be reserved online or by phone. Trail maps are available at the park office, on the website, and in the app.

BOATINGCanoe, pedal boat, tandem kayak, and rowboat rentals are available on the 49-acre Big Ridge Lake. The boat dock is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Please call the park office at 800-471-5305 for specific hours of operation. Guestsmay use personal electric trolling motors on park rowboats. Privately owned boats, including canoes and kayaks, can be launched on Big Ridge Lake for a nominal fee. Fishing boats, ski boats, and wave runners can be launched from the ramp on Norris Lake, just outside the park entrance drive. Due to low water levels, there is no access to the ramp on Norris Lake during winter months.

FISHINGFish year-round from the shore of Big Ridge Lake(except at the swimming beach), or from the shoreline along Norris Lake, which is famous for its striped bass fishery. State license requirements apply.

CAMPINGBig Ridge has 50 year-round campsites on or near Norris Lake to accommodate RVs, trailers and tent campers. Most sites have water, 50-amp electrical hookups, a picnic table, and a grill. A dump station is available at the entrance to the campground. There are three bathhouses with hot showers and restroom facilities. One is open year-round. Firewood is sold onsite, and a camp store is open seasonally.

BIG RIDGE STATE PARKThe heavily-forested, 3,642-acre park lies on the southern shore of the Norris Reservoir, 25 miles north of Knoxville. The rustic park offers visitors a wealth of activities, from camping to guided nature tours. Big Ridge State Park was one of five demonstration parks developed by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Built with cooperation from the National Park Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps, these parks served as examples of public recreation development along TVA lakeshores. Many of today’s park structures reflect the craftsmanship and stonework of the CCC. Walking the trails, you can see remnants of homes and farms that existed here before the formation of the TVA. Other notable structures within the park are the Norton Gristmill built circa 1825, and the remnants of Sharp’s Station Fort, built in the late 1700s. On Indian Rock, a plaque commemorates the death of Peter Graves, a settler of Sharp’s Station.

SWIMMINGA sandy beach at Big Ridge Lake provides swimming enjoyment from before Memorial Day through after Labor Day. There are no lifeguards on duty.

CABINSTwenty cabins are available from April through October. Nineteen of them were built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and they still retain the charm and design of that time. Five cabins are lakeside, and 15 sit on the heavily-wooded ridge. Most cabins accommodate six people. ©
