Physical and Chemical Changes and Properties

Matter Matter is everywhere. Matter is anything that takes up
space and has mass. Matter can be described by physical
and chemical properties. Matter is constantly experiencing
both chemical and physical changes.

Physical Property Physical Properties describe matter
without changing its composition (or what it’s made of)
Examples include color, shape, mass, phase, hardness, texture, melting point, boiling point.
The ball is black, shiny, and hard.

Chemical Properties Chemical properties describe matter
when it reacts with another substance. Chemical properties include burning,
rusting, tarnishing, and exploding. The wood will burn if it comes in contact
with fire.

Physical Change Physical changes occur when matter
changes its properties but not its composition.
Physical changes could include a change in texture, shape, size, state of matter, volume, mass, and weight.
Cutting, melting, freezing, dissolving

Physical Change
This is a physical change because water is changed to ice. This is a liquid changing to a solid which is a change in the state of matter only.

Chemical Change Chemical changes are changes matter
undergoes when it becomes new or different matter.
To identify a chemical change look for signs such as unexpected color change, bubbling and fizzing, light production, smoke, formation of a precipitate, and production of heat.
Chemical changes cannot be undone

Chemical Change A chemical change
occurs when fireworks are used. Fireworks are made of metals such as magnesium and copper. These change chemically as they light up the sky.
