PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Do Now: What is an autotroph?
Quick Recap:
• ALL energy to support life comes from:
Th Sun (solar energy)
Energy comes from the sun then ( don’t write)…
• Autotrophs:– Convert the sun
energy to chemical energy
– PRODUCERS
• Heterotrophs– Consume the chemical
energy to get energy– CONSUMERS
Photosynthesis:
• Uses energy from the sun
• To create energy as Sugar (glucose)
Sunlight + water + carbon dioxide oxygen + glucose
Energy + 6H2O + 6CO2 6O2 + C6H12O6
Where does Photosynthesis take place?
• thylakoids:– Location of Light
Reaction– Absorbs sunlight using
chlorophyll (pigment that reflects green light)
• Stroma: – Compare to cytoplasm of
cell.– Jelly-like substance that
surrounds thylakoid– Location of Calvin Cycle
• Takes place in the CHLOROPLAST
Grana = stack of thylakoids
thylakoids Stroma
The two main stages of photosynthesis are…
• Light Reaction • Calvin Cycle– (AKA Dark Reaction).
Two reactions are connected through
1.ATP
2.NADPH
Each fuels the other
The light reaction: First stage of photosynthesis- chlorophyll absorbs light
energy
• LOCATION: – thylakoid membrane
• WHAT GOES IN?– Water– Sunlight
• WHAT COMES OUT?– Oxygen
• WHAT IS GIVEN TO CALVIN CYCLE?– ATP and NADPH
Calvin Cycle (Dark Reaction): uses energy making molecules from Light Reaction to
make sugars
• LOCATION:– Stroma: (fluid
surrounding thylakoids)
• WHAT GOES IN?– Carbon Dioxide
• WHAT COMES OUT?– Sugars
• Glucose
