Shutter Speed

Shutter speed

It’s a measurement of time that a camera’s shutter is open. Allowing light usually after it has passed through the lens and through the aperture diaphragm, to strike a photosensitive surface, like film or a digital sensor.

F-Stop is a Camera setting corresponding to a particular F-#

It is a dimensionless number that is a quantitative measure of lens speed, and an important concept on photography.

SLRA digital camera combining the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera

with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film.

Exposure

Exposure is the amount of light per unit area (the image plane illuminance times the exposure time) reaching a photographic film or electronic image sensor, as determined by shutter speed, lens aperture and scene luminance

ApertureA space through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument,

especially the variable opening by which light enters a camera

ISOISO is a setting that lets you configure how sensitive you camera is to light

High = More Sensitive

Low = Less Sensitive

Depth of Field

Depth of field (DOF), Also called focus range or effective focus range, is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image.

Wide Angle

A wide lens refers to a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than a focal of a normal lens for a given film plane.

Page 12: Photography Vocab by: Taren Haynes, Robert Barnes, Devin Guelfo, Ashley Evans.

Telephoto

Attachment to camera lens that increases the physical length of the lens over the actual focal length.

Allows the user to zoom in from afar for shots that capture action while being presently away from it.

Filters

A filter is a camera accessory consisting of an optical filter that can be inserted into the optical path

Perspective

The was our eye relates to spacial separation and the relationship between the size of objects within the spacial separation. What this means in layman’s terms is things seem smaller the further away you are.

Saturation

It's the intensity in color. Also how much color the picture has. This is important.

Page 16: Photography Vocab by: Taren Haynes, Robert Barnes, Devin Guelfo, Ashley Evans.

Vignette

A border surrounding the picture’s edges to give it a specific affect (focused, old-timey, colored, etc etc)

Page 17: Photography Vocab by: Taren Haynes, Robert Barnes, Devin Guelfo, Ashley Evans.

Tripod

A three legged stand that is used to hold a camera in place

External Lighting

Any light source not given from the camera (flash)
