Candid Photos• Photos in which subjects are not
posed.
Caption• Used to give information about the

Composition• Describes the arrangement of objects
in a photo
Crop• Trims part of the original photo
Diaphragm• Creates the aperture
Digital Zoom• Inferior to optical zoom• Enlarges center of photo, center
appears larger and quality is reduced
Exposure• The amount of light striking a
photographic material, i.e. film
Focal Point• The subject of a photo
Formal Portraits• Taken in a studio; subjects are posed
and looking at the camera
Informal Portraits• Similar to formal portrait except the
subject is shot in his or her natural environment
Landscape View• Picture shot horizontally
Lens• Captures an image by gathering light
and focusing a subject
Lighting• Refers to the direction of the light in
relation to the photo’s subject
Macro• Setting that allows close-up
photography
Memory Card• Stores images on a camera
Optical Zoom• Adjustment of the lens to magnify
image without loss of picture quality
Photo Credit• Tells who took the picture
Pixels• The tiny squares that make up a photo
Point-n-Shoot Camera• Has built-in lens, fixed aperture and
automatic flash, which it uses automatically to determine the correct exposure and focus as it records the image
Portrait View• Picture shot vertically
Resolution• Number of pixels per square inch• Higher=better quality
Rule of Thirds• Subject is off centered; preferred
Shutter• Controls how much light enters the
camera by the length of time the shutter is open
Silhouette • Picture using light to create varying
effects
Still-life Photo • Picture of inanimate objects
Release Button• Button, on the camera, used to take
the photo
Single Lens Reflex Camera (SLR)
• Second type of camera• Relies more on operator for quality
photos
Video Screen• Screen used to preview photos on
digital cameras
Viewfinder• Area of camera used to view the
subject of photo to be taken
