Regard selection Captain Fantastic, quips “a tuxedo and a bathing suit.”There’s more than a grain of truthto those twin poles of dressing forthe festival, from black tie for galapremieres to beachwear for the poshhotel poois. For the former, styleconsultant Andrew Weitz, a onetimeHollywood agent who caters toindustry executives through TheWeitz Effect, says that thisseason’s archetypal tuxedo isthe Tom Ford O’Connor, withits slim peak lapel, aka “theJames Bond cut.” To vary night-time premiere looks, Canali’sivory dinnerjacket with satin shawlcollar pairs well with tux trousers:“It’s a great option: white, South ofFrance, Cannes Film Festival you

jackets do double duty withjeans for parties. “It’s really

spectrum, Weitz counsels menagainst “long, baggy board shorts,”or to at least “make sure it’s a 2016version that’s slim and comes abovethe knee. “ One good choice is aRetromarine seersucker that candouble as a walking short. Combineit with a terry cloth poio and aBottega Veneta slip-on sneaker injute canvas for a yacht-worthy vibe.
By day, suits and sport coats arethe rule for meetings, lunches andphotocalls. SyLvain CorbeiL, a pro-ducer on Xavier Dotan’s It’s Only theEnd ofthe World, indicates thereshould be a formality even to casualevents at Cannes: “It has a longtimetradition ofbeing unmatched, so it’smore conservative in looks.” Ratherthan a typical navy blazer, Weitzsuggests one “with more pop,” likea Mediterranean-blue sport jacketfrom Canali in a “traveling wool”that’s water-resistant to withstanda downpour and so wrinkle-free, youcan ball it up. It mixes easily withkhaki trousers, bluejeans or “a whitecottonjean — a great look,” saysWeitz. As for suits, an option fromIsaia in a subtle plaid in super-140swool is “a three-in-one, “ says Weitz.“You can wear it as a full suit, orthejacket with a pair ofslacks, or thepants with any solid shirt or jacket.”
A leather loafer that easily transitions from a suit to jeans in whatWeitz calls “the perfect shade ofbrown when wearing blues and grays”can be found at Prada. (The NeonDemon director NiCotas Winding Reinseconds that: “Just remember toalways wear Prada to Cannes and youcan’t go wrong.”) For a more casualshoe, Weitz recommends the Lanvincap-toe sneaker in a blue waxedlinen. And for that European elan,Weitz likes a no-show invisible sock, like those by Calvin Klein.
Weitz’s pick for packing it allin (one client told him it was “life-changing”) is the Tumi Alpha 2,
a sleek nylon garment-bag hybrid onwheels that’s great for trips that lastfor more than four days. Garmentshang in both directions to doubleup on space in a zippered compartment that also includes sectionsfor items like shoes, which he preferscouched in shoe bags holding lightplastic shoe trees. Attention to thesetypes of details goes a long way.“In Cannes, everybody’s bringingtheir A-game, “ says executive vpPauL Davidson offilm distributor TheOrchard. “All the events, meetings, parties and screenings have a moredramatic feel, and what you wear hasgot to live up to the challenge.”
