PHS homecoming is a soggy affair

The girls of the 2012 PHS homecoming court, lined up in their finest on Friday looked like a rainbow row of colorful candy, despite the muddy field and rainy weather. From left are freshman Katie Roth, sophomore Taylor Cissell, junior Brooke Picou, senior Aleshia Reiss, homecoming queen senior Kristin Triller and senior Lauren Buxton. After spending most of the football game under a tent, the girls shivered in their evening wear as near 40-degree temperatures set in along with light rain during the halftime crowing of queen Triller and king Christopher Zahner.

At left, diehard pirate fans Barb and Raymond Bohnert dressed in layers on Friday, braving the elements to cheer on the boys in green. Above, students from PHS don’t care about the rain, as they turn out in coats and gloves to support their team. At right, Marching Buc-caneer tuba players had to wrap their instruments in plastic to protect them from the falling rain during the band’s halftime performance.

students who filled the school gymnasium with cheers, with a variety of skits organized by the stu-dent council, the mothers of the senior football players and the PHS cheerleaders.

While the student body looked on, the football players were blindfolded, and unwittingly dressed in women’s clothing. There was also a peanut butter eat-ing contest, and senior Levi Bachman amazed the crowd by ingesting a near-full two- liter bottle of root beer, to beat out three representa-tives from lower grades.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the decision was made by school administrators to move the homecoming parade, origi-nally slated for Friday eve-ning, to Saturday morning due to the continued rainfall.

The 7:30 p.m. kickoff saw temperatures drop-ping to the low 50s, and a steady drizzle still falling. Die-hard Pirate fans and parents dressed in slickers, braved the elements under umbrellas to show their sup-port for the boys on the field who followed suit of the

NFL players and wore pink socks with their traditional uniforms to show support for October’s breast cancer awareness month.

“They are showing their support,” football mom Nancy Voelker said.

Hot chocolate was a big seller for the game, as fans huddled together to stay warm and dry, and the cheerleaders donned rain-coats over their uniforms.

With less than a minute left in the first quarter, am-bulance crews were called to the field to assist an of-ficial who was complaining of chest pains. The game was delayed as the ref was taken from the game on a stretcher and later trans-ported to the hospital via ambulance.

Half-time saw the Marching Buccaneers doing little in the way of marching in the rain, as the students performed the half-time show in the chilly rain with instruments wrapped in plastic to protect them from the weather.

Athletic Director Jeff Steffens rolled out a tarp for the homecoming court, dressed in their formal fin-

est, so they would be able to step onto the football field without standing in mud, despite the fact that the girls on court traded in their heals for rain boots.

Kristin Triller, daughter of Charlie and Dana Triller and Christopher Zahner, son of Scott and Melissa Zahner, were selected by the student body to serve as the 2012 homecoming king and queen.

“I am so happy and surprised,” Dana Triller, mother of Kristen, said with tears in her eyes. The senti-ment was repeated by Zahn-er’s mother Melissa who worked her way to the front of the crowd to congratulate her son.

The Pirates fell to the Park Hills Central Rebels, 35-0. Saturday morning, the skies cleared and the morning parade drew quite a crowd as class floats and wagons moved along the route tossing out candy.

A number of party ven-ues were booked with alum-ni class reunions on Satur-day night, while the student body gathered at the Perry Park Center for the annual homecoming dance.

Although chilly, the pa-rade was held under bright blue skies, with thousands of Perryville resi-dents turning out to line the streets to wave at the classes who contrib-uted floats and wagons to the parade. Spirits were high de-spite the fact Pirates fell to Park Hills Central.

To the relief of many, the homecoming parade originally set for Friday night was moved to Saturday morning due to rain. After a gloomy Friday, homecomers were happy to welcome the Saturday morning sunshine, as is apparent in Eli Brown’s arms-open stance, above, as he rode in the parade with his Perryville Youth Football teammates. Several classes participated in the pa-rade, the earliest being 1931. The class of 1992 had some unexpected ex-citement when a classic Camaro they were run-ning through the parade in front of the class wagon overheated, sidelining a few members of the class near the end of the parade route.
