Several of you have told me about scam emails showing up in your inbox ostensibly from someone you know. Sometimes you get an email with a link to another site or sometimes hackers use your email address to send spam to your contacts to trick them into thinking you need help or ask them to share personal information. A Member recently sent me this example:

I really hope you get this fast, how are doing today? I don't know if you're aware that am presently in Ukraine, I was robbed of my

cash, phones and credit cards last night but I thank God no lives were lost. I need you lend me some money, about $2,450 USD or whatever you can afford.

How did this happen? The answer is that a friend’s email address book has been hacked. What should you do? First, do not click on any questionable links and do not respond to any suspicious emails. If you do, your own email account will be compromised. Second, send a separate email to your friend to let them know that you suspect their email account has been hacked.

If your email account is hacked, take these steps to protect yourself.

• Once you’ve been hacked, change your password immediately so the hacker can’t get back in. When creating a password, make it more secure by using upper and lowercase characters, numbers and special characters and by avoiding real words. The best passwords have 16 or more random charac-ters. Do not use the same password across multiple sites.

• If you use the same password for other accounts like Facebook or online banking, change your password. This is critical if you use your email address as the username since the hacker now has both your username and password.

• Check your sent email to identify those who received the unauthorized email. After you have safeguarded your own account, let those contacts know that you didn't send the email.

Dear Fellow Members,Given it has only been a few

weeks since my last Member up-date, I'd like to share information about other projects underway that will infl uence our continued suc-cess. We are in the fi nal stages of completing our Branding Analysis, which provides a framework to support our Marketing Plan. This project is being led by Jennifer May, our Webmaster and Digital Marketing Specialist. The process has significantly enhanced our working knowledge of market demographics and the competi-tive landscape. Accordingly, we are planning our advertising and

marketing initiatives to more strategically support membership goals and reach those communi-ties that represent 70 percent of our membership. Our focus remains a blend of "Everything a Country Club Should Be" with messaging about the vibrant lifestyle that comes from our full-service country club.

In the short term, this summer, we will refresh our public Website home page to help our prospects better understand what our Club has to offer. We will also upgrade and refresh our private Member Site to provide an easier process for dining reservations and tee times.

Our longer term view allows for adjustments to ensure we

remain proactive in our ever-changing market. This will also help us in better planning and prioritizing capital projects.

As reported, the Fitness/Spa renovation is now scheduled to begin next April, with an expected completion date of September 2015. While we had originally hoped to complete this, our fi nal project, this summer, we realized that unavoidable delays in the plan-ning would push construction well into season. We recognized that this would have caused disruption to our Members and our Fitness/Spa staff and, therefore, made the deci-sion to delay until next spring. Our terms with our bankers include a commitment to fi nish all identifi ed projects over a three-year period. Based on our current schedule, we are well within the funding guide-lines and look forward to delivering a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility.

Dear Members, Memorial Day, Mother’s Day

and Father’s day, coupled with special events such as our New York, New York dance party and our mid-day Pool Party, offered something for all our Members and for our Reciprocal guests. July starts with a bang with our Independence Day celebration on Friday, July 4. This year we are including a Bocce tourna-ment along with our Golf and Tennis events. Couple this with a great cookout courtesy of Chef Jeff and the result will be a day to celebrate. And, don’t miss the Sizzling Summer White Hot Party on July 20.

The Greenside Grille and Bar continue to bustle with activity and we do our best to provide you with exciting menu choices. Many of you told us in the Survey this spring that you would like to see fewer buffets and more à la carte service. We are responding. We are also using the summer months to launch an intensive training program for all servers, bartenders and assistant servers. We are positive you will notice a difference.

The record prices in the grocery aisle are having their impact everywhere, including here at Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC). This has been caused by extreme drought

conditions in California, Texas and Oklahoma. Beef is up over 10% so far in 2014. Prices for local pink shrimp and stone crabs have increased over 20% due to low volumes of catch this season. As a result, you will notice some unavoidable mod-est price increases on certain menu items.

A reminder: Many of you look forward to inviting your friends and family to the Club. We welcome guests, but we do ask that Members accom-pany their guests while on Club property unless other specifi c arrangements have been made. Arrangements for guests who are entering the Club property through the gatehouse MUST be made by the Club Receptionist.

One group who is a mainstay of our social evenings here at the Club is the QWOFF (Quail Women Out For Fun). This Social group plans all types of

events, including trips to local theaters, a book club, movie night at the Club, dining locally at restaurants or, during the sum-mer, dining at our reciprocal partners. Every night the Club is open for dinner, there is a QWOFF table for all Club func-tions.

This is a great opportunity for our QCCC women to make new friends and share with other Members. The group is open to everyone, married or single. What is particularly great about the QWOFF is that you are guaranteed to have fun and you will always have something to do. The MGA completed its most successful season ever. Participation was up in every event. We want to thank our outgoing President Brian Melton for his leadership and our past President Bill Westrick for his guidance and support. We also thank our Secretary Dean Solowin who did an outstanding job recording our minutes.

Congratulations to the winners of our last three events of the season. The Kings Classic gross winners were Adam Roggenburk and Willie Williamson. Net winners were Bob Wilsey and Kevin Lamb. Closing Day winners were Gary Lemke, Bob Ellensohn, Allan Ivascu and Carl Olla. These four winners, as well as the closest to the pin winners, Terry Kelaher and Rod Blucher, all enjoyed a great day of golf and lunch at Calusa Pines.

MGA News

The winners of the Old Pal Tournament were Nick Kallergis and Ron Perri. They defeated Jeff Darwish and Dan Curran in a hard-fought match.

The MGA Board has planned an exciting season for 2014–2015. We have 12 tournaments scheduled and have added two ABCD paired 40 ball events. Our membership stands at 282 members and we are anticipating another great year.

Finally, we want to send out a big thank you to the staff at Quail Creek for their outstanding assistance with all our events. We thank Mike Dero and the entire Pro Shop team, Emily Hatcher and Chef Bowles for the great meals, Kim Utera for all our posters and communications and Kevin Leo for our great Golf Courses.

Dear Members,

I invite you all to play in the July 4 Firecracker Mixed Golf Tournament and the Labor Day Mixed event with other Members or guests. You can form any mixed group you wish: two couples, three women and a man, or three men and a woman. Guests are encouraged and they pay no guest fees for these events. Find a friend or two and join the fun.

The chipping green at the practice range is part of this year’s renovation and will be closed until November 1. We have added some practice wedge targets and fl ags at the range to stimulate your practice and improvement in the 25–75 yard range. The putting green at the range can be chipped to, but please keep the shots down to short chips. We don’t want high wedge shots hit into this green, which would ruin the putting surface. Thanks in advance for your patience.

Tee Box TipsHere are a few ideas that

may help you fi nd a few more fairways and keep you in a bet-ter state of mind on the fi rst tee.

1. Understand your natural shot shape and plan for it visually, mentally and physically.

Tee your ball on the side of the tee that best fi ts your eye and shot shape. If you naturally hit fades and slices, aim down the left side, tee up on the right side of the tee box, and allow your natural swing to fl ow. For a draw, set up on the left side of the tee, because the fairway will look bigger.

2. Make a commitment or agree-ment with yourself before you play.

“I realize that I will hit a few bad clunker shots during the upcoming round. I understand this, accept this, forgive myself for this, and will do my best on the next shot without emotional negativity attached.”

3. Decide on an emotional mind-set that you would like to maintain throughout the round.

Confi dence, trust, commitment, joy, appreciation, on the upbeat side and acceptance, detach-ment, allowing, contentment and calmness on the lower energy scale.

4. Get prepared to golf at least ten minutes before you tee off.

Put on sunscreen; put your personal mark on at least two balls; wet a towel; make sure you have tees and ball markers; and get some ice water.

5. Put away your ego before you get to the fi rst tee.

No one else really gives a hoot about how you play or look. They have enough to worry about. Relax and remember, you are not the center of the universe. It’s only golf and you don’t play it for a living.

6. Before you leave the practice range take a few confi dent swings with the club you’ll be using off your fi rst tee box.

Pretend you have thousands of people watching you and attempt to get yourself nervous. After hitting a successful shot at the range, you’ll be less stressed standing on the fi rst tee. 7. Understand you can’t con-trol your playing partners, the weather, the course conditions, or ultimately… the golf ball. All you really have control over are your own emotions and if you can control your emotions, you can thoroughly enjoy the game.

8. Don’t put yourself in a position to fail on the fi rst tee.

Don’t choose a club you don’t like or don’t trust; don’t try a shot that you don’t have confi dence in or haven’t practiced. Go with your favorite club and your authentic swing.

WGA 18 Hole News

The WGA page on the Quail Creek Website has been updated for the 2014–2015 season. You will fi nd all WGA event and sign-up dates there. The Executive Board voted to implement the following major change this year: For all Member/Guest events, each Member is allowed to invite one guest when the sign-up date begins. If the fi eld is NOT full two weeks prior to the event, Members can then invite additional guests.

Jeanne Reid and Jennifer Carney are busy preparing for the November 5 Opening Day. The theme is “Meet the REAL Housewives of Quail Creek.” Sign-up begins October 7.

Summer Interclub League is underway with the leadership of Sally Masters. This league is played at a variety of clubs. The schedule is posted in the Women’s Locker Room and on the bulletin board outside of the Golf Pro Shop. A handicap of 32.4 or less is required. The charge is $50 and includes golf, lunch and prizes. For additional information contact Sally at 239-597-9248.

The Lady Niners Board and Event Chairs are getting ready for the 2014-2015 season. They are also in the process of updating the Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC) Website to refl ect the changes in the Board and the events calendar. Please make sure your contact information is updated on the Website so that the new Lady Niners Handbook is correct before it is printed this summer.

For those of you remaining in Naples, it is a great time to take advantage of the reciprocal season and play other interesting and challenging courses in the Naples area. All you have to do is get a foursome together. The Pro Shop will set up the tee times at any of the clubs on the reciprocal list, which can be found on the QCCC Website.

All Lady Niners should mark their calendars for the fall special events. On Friday, October 24, President Karen Whitney will be hosting the Meet-N-Greet Breakfast which is complimentary for all Lady Niners. It is a great way to renew friendships and to meet new Members. Marie Lacy and Kathleen Wicklund are hosting the Opening Day event on Monday, October 27.

In addition, the Lady Niners are hosting the 2015 Invitational, chaired by Lisa Paulus. The Invitational includes 35 nine-hole associations from other clubs in Collier County. This popular event, with the theme of “Masquerade,” is scheduled for Monday, February 9. Make sure you save the date so you can participate in showcasing our Club and our Lady Niners Association.

The Quail Course renovation project continues to be right on schedule. When completed, both the Quail and the Creek will have been totally updated, tee to green. The improvements include: new irrigation systems, new bunker sand, returning the greens and bunkers to their original design, native areas, turf removal, fruit trees and edible landscaping, new grass on fairways and greens, reconstructed lake banks and recovered landing areas.

By doing much of the work ourselves, we were able to save money. Our renovation took us in the direction of modern course design, creating not only a more eco-friendly environment, but additional cost savings. The need to undertake these projects was compelling because of the following:

IrrigationThe Quail Creek Country

Club (QCCC) irrigation system was past its prime and needed to be replaced and improved. The original plan called for 1,617 sprinkler heads to be installed on the Creek Course alone. Before the renovation, we had 772 sprinkler heads in working condition. When the Creek Course renovation was complete, we installed 883 state-of-the-art sprinkler heads capable of get-ting water right where we need it.

Reduction of TurfOver the years, grass had

spread throughout the property. When the trees grew, they cre-ated more shade. That factor, along with their extensive root systems, made growing grass in these areas diffi cult. The trend has always been to reduce turf

grass because of the cost of maintenance. We realize that the result is a different look for the Members. However, playability and accessibility are improved and the resulting look takes us in the direction of industry-leading courses. We removed approximately 35 acres of turf, replacing it with more native areas, including many varieties of ornamental grasses and color to brighten up the Course. I feel that QCCC has the potential to be a top-rated club and set a precedent for golf course management.

GroundcoverWe’re working on improving

the groundcover (pine straw, concrete screening,etc.) since there is more area impacted than previously. During the summer months, we will be working on fi rming up the out-of-play areas to improve the playing surface. We are proud of what has been accomplished and want all of Southwest Florida to know that Quail Creek Country Club has two of the fi nest courses in the area.

The Summer Season at the Fitness Center

The Fitness Center continues to be open from 6:00 am until 9:00 pm, seven days a week throughout the summer. When the rest of the Club is closed on Wednesdays, we are not, so come in and exercise. The staff is here to help you get started and stay fi t. You can schedule a therapeutic massage, a facial, or a personal training session when the staff has even more time to give personal attention. Evening, early-morning and weekend hours are available. Teri Brodie, our Offi ce Manager, will be taking the summer off, so please email or leave a voicemail message for us. We will call you back as quickly as possible.

Swim LessonsWe have private and semi-

private swim lessons available for children and adults this summer. Our knowledgeable instructors will work at your level—from beginners to those who want to fine-tune their stroke. It could save your life!

Relay For LifeOur Relay For Life team,

benefi ting the American Cancer Society, has raised over $121,081 this year! Congratulations to all. We are busy planning our big fundraising event for 2015—a Casino Night on Tuesday, January 27. We are looking for volunteers to help us with this fun-fi lled evening. All of us have been touched by cancer, so please contact me at 593-9378 to get involved.

Staff Trained in C.P.R. and Use of the A.E.D.

and EMS will alert QCCC that an emergency exists, as well as where we need to bring our AED unit. We will be able to respond to the golf course more quickly than EMS—and that may make the difference. We hope that we will never need to use the AEDs, but we are all happy that we have the knowledge on how to use them.

SUMMER FITNESS CLASSES

This summer more than 80 staff members will review adult, child and infant CPR, as well as the use of the Automated External Defi brillator (AED). Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC) believes very strongly in this safety train-ing, which benefi ts our Members and our staff.

We presently have six AEDs at QCCC and we are purchasing two additional units to travel with our golf course rangers daily. Each AED is stationed to specifi cally service a particular area. We have an AED located in the Fitness Center hallway, the Tennis Center office, the Greenside Grille, the Cypress Room, the Cart Barn (to service the golf courses) and in the Golf Course Maintenance offi ce (for the staff and the back side of both Golf Courses). We envision more than one staff person will always be available to respond to an emergency. Our work this summer will make QCCC safer for Members, guests and staff.

So, please remember your cell phones when you are golfi ng. In case of an emergency, call 911

awareness campaign to let local families and businesses know about Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC).

The word must be getting out because since the end of April, we have been fortunate to welcome 22 new Members into our QCCC family! This is a true testament to your Club. Several of these have come from your referrals. They are your friends, neighbors or colleagues. Thank you!

Recently, we hosted a pro-gram that waived the joining fee for Social and Associate memberships for two days only. When our Associates reach the mandatory age of 46, we expect most will convert to Class A Golf.

Late in May we hosted After Five, a networking event for the Naples’ Chamber of Commerce in the Greenside Grille and Bar. Nearly two hundred local business professionals attended. Many attendees told me it was the best Chamber event ever. The Greenside Grille was the perfect showcase for Chef Bowles and his team of culinary experts, who went above and beyond in their presentation of hors d'oeuvres and desserts. J. Dudley Goodlette, a well-known Florida legislator and chairman of the Chamber, addressed the gathering before handing the microphone over to our own Ted Monty for a few words. The evening was a huge success and one more step in our

From the advance advertising and the two-day promotion, we are pleased to welcome twelve new Social Memberships, one new Associate Golf Membership and two Preview Golf Memberships.

We are pleased to report that some of our new Social Members are giving golf a try this summer. The availability of summer golf, in-season Women’s Three-Hole Wine and Cheese golf group and Men’s Three-Hole Cigar and Cognac outings, may help more Social Members build their golf-ing confi dence.

When things begin to slow down a little, I plan to make a few breakfast visits to some of the local real estate brokers. This outreach is important as I am surprised by how many realtors still think that you must own a home in the Estates to belong to QCCC. In addition to realtors who are Members, nearly thirty realtors are now working with me to introduce prospective home buyers to all that QCCC has to offer.

There is more work to be done, but we have made a good start.

QWOFF (Quail Women Out For Fun)

All Quail Creek women are welcome to join our friendly group. We will be happy to meet you before any event and introduce you to everyone—just call—and welcome to QWOFF! During Season: Lois Werder (239-514-0072) or Louise Agin (239-566-3447).

During the Summer: Barbara Driscoll (239-591-4641) will be planning dinner or outings.

For all events, if you plan to stay for dinner, please call in your own reservations and request to be seated at the QWOFF table. There is always a QWOFF table available for Sunday night dining at 5:30 pm.

The Book Club is open to all Quail Creek Country Club Mem-bers. There are no advance sign-ups and the discussion is very informal. Please join us when you can. We meet on the fi rst Tuesday of each month during season, EXCEPT for Octo-ber and January when we meet on the second Tuesday. The meetings are held at 1:00 pm in the Oak Room. Many of us meet for lunch at 11:45 am prior to the meeting. No reserva-tions are needed.
