On behalf of the members of Bayview Yacht Club, I would like to welcome all of this year’s participants to the 95th running of our race. Over 200 boats will start this year, on one of two courses, sailing multiple directions up Lake Huron to Mackinac Island in an effort to claim the prize.

Bayview has been a beehive of activity this year! Not only for the owners and crews who have been preparing their boats for the race, but for all of us behind the scenes.

I would like to thank the 2019 Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race Chair, Bob Nutter, the entire Race Committee, Volunteers, BYC Staff and Mackinac Race Authority. While the waterways, the boats and the sailors get all the glory, the behind the scenes folks are the ones who make it all happen.

And there are others, the many organizations that work so hard behind the scenes to make it work. Thanks also goes out to the City of Port Huron, the Blue Water Festival, Mackinac Island, the Detroit Sports Media Association, Marx Layne and Associates, the US Coast Guard and Set Sail for Autism - your efforts make this race enjoyable for all.

It is the support of our sponsors that allows us to run a premier yachting event and it all starts with our Title Sponsor: Bell’s Beer. The entire Bell’s staff are great enthusiasts of the race

and Bayview Yacht Club. We appreciate their support and look forward continuing this great relationship. Our other sponsors include Grand Hotel, Luca Mariano Premium Whiskey, Gill, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Pentastar Aviation, North Sails, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, NôMI Sparkling Water, Aitken & Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, Sharpe Travel Services, Legal Copy Services, Sykes & Webster – The Burton Families, and the Bayview Yacht Club Foundation. Thanks to all of you for your support!

As you can see, it takes a lot to run the greatest fresh water race in the country!

I hope you enjoy that all our race offers - Sail fast and sail safe and I will see you all at the party! z

Allow me to say hello and welcome to the skippers, crew, fans and sponsors participating in the 2019 Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. I am honored to chair this historic race in its 95th consecutive running up Lake Huron to Mackinac Island, the longest running consecutive fresh-water sailboat race in North America. I am also honored to be following my brother’s “dock steps” as race chairman. Russel H. Nutter Jr. served as Race Chairman in 1987 and 1995. I’ve had the pleasure of racing 30-plus Bayview Mackinac

races, and 30-plus Chicago Mackinac Races on various boats; from NA40s to J44s to 70 footers and a Non-Such 30. During those years I was not fully aware of all the behind the scenes volunteer support required to conduct these races. I now appreciate how much work it takes each and every year.Over 165 volunteers donate their time and efforts over

the course of an entire year to make this race happen. At the end of last year’s race in August, the Mackinac Race Authority (MRA) began planning for this year’s race. Work continued at Bayview over the winter in preparation for the start in Port Huron and the finish on Mackinac Island. As you may be aware, we are approaching the 100th

running of this historic race in 2024. I’ve been lucky enough to experience and meet many fun people over the years. Each race has created new friends and new memories. This all starts with being invited to race on a boat and from that we meet new people and forge new friendships. And of course, at the end of these races we assemble for the awards party as we will this year on the grounds of the Grand Hotel. We look forward to seeing you there having fun after a safe race.

At this time I’d like to extend a special thank you to the United States Coast Guard for their support in helping Bayview Yacht Club conduct another safe race. In addition, I’d like to take this time to thank our sponsors and supporters for the race: Bell’s Brewery, Grand Hotel, Luca Mariano Premium Whiskey, Gill, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Pentastar Aviation, North Sails, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, NôMI Sparkling Water, Aitken & Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, Sharpe Travel Services, Legal Copy Services, Sykes & Webster – The Burton Families, Bayview Yacht Club Foundation, Detroit Sports Media, Marx Layne, Freighter’s Eatery & Tap Room, Futuramic Tool and Engineering, Harken, Pink Pony – Chippewa Hotel and Thomas Hardware Company and once again our volunteers. z

Welcome to the 95th Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race! We – the Mackinac Race Authority, the BYC Flag Officers and Board of Governors, Bayview Yacht Club members and staff, Race volunteers (over 160 volunteers, both BYC members and non-members!) and all our sponsors- are pleased to be able to bring the spirit of competition, great comradery, a lovely destination and a great post-race party to each and every one of you, our friends and competitors. You are the reason we at BYC undertake this massive production year after year. We cannot thank you and your support teams (family and friends) enough for your continued support –

2019 Race Chair, Bob Nutter, has been working hard to ensure both the safety and competitiveness of this race since the July 2018 awards party. Bob has been helped along the way by Safety Committee Chair Brian Geraghty, Technical Chair Art LeVasseur, Race Administrator Melissa Wenzler as well as the other members of the Mackinac Race Authority: (in alphabetical order) Comm. John Burke, Chris Clark, Paul Falcone, Todd Jones, Don Maxwell, C J Ruffing, Dr. Gary Shoemaker and yours truly.

As mentioned above, our volunteers are invaluable in helping to run this Race. I swear we have a committee for every aspect of the Race! From behind the scenes (Technical, Safety, and Sponsorship Committees) to those committees that are very visible to you such as the Registration/Skipper Check-In Committee, Race Committee (Start Line and Finish Line), Inspection and Harbor Committees. Please don’t hesitate to thank them for the time they give to make the Race a good experience for you. Our International Jury is also volunteer based. Bruce Cook (USA) will be coming in from east coast to chair the committee which also includes Comm. Ted Everingham (USA), David Pelling (CAN), Andrew Alberti (CAN) and Elliot Levy (VEN).

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the city of Port Huron for their great hospitality. They also have a terrific team in place to help BYC facilitate the pre-race festivities. Every aspect of City Management plus the Port Huron Police, St. Clair County Sheriff and the

USCG help to ensure all the festivities, including the Blue Water Fest, are safe and fun for all, sailors and non-sailors alike.

And we can’t forget our sponsors! Led by Bell’s Beer, we are fortunate to have the support of sponsors who help us provide a quality race and related social activities for you. You’ll notice their ads throughout this race program. One of the best things that you can do for this Race, aside from competing in it, is to support our sponsors whenever you have a need in their area of expertise. Your support not only validates that their sponsorship funds have been well invested in both the Race and you, its competitors, but also encourages them to return as a sponsor in future years so we can maintain the quality of our Race.

Thank you once again for your support. I wish you fair winds and clear skies and I hope the Race meets all your hopes and expectations. I leave you with a quote from William Arthur Ward – ‘The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails’. z

A s we are getting ready for the 95th running of the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race, we like to take time to thank our more than 165 Race volunteers who do everything from selling beer at the Bell’s Beer Oasis Tent and registering boats at Bayview and in Port Huron, to starting the boats on July 20, to finishing, docking, checking in, and inspecting the boats on Mackinac Island. Not only do we have volunteers for the 6 days of the Race, from registration to awards party, we have many more who are behind the scenes in the set up for the Race.

The 2019 Race Committee Person of the Year joined Bayview Yacht Club in 1960 as a student at Wayne State University and a member of the Wayne Sailing Club. He sailed Ravens for several years and he raced the Mackinac with Com. Tommy Hanson on his NY32 and CAL 36 Dauntless, with Com. John Pappas and with Floyd Hinsby. The first year he served on the starting line of the Mackinac Race, the race committee boat was a converted PT boat.

Today, he is a valued club member and volunteer who has served on the Mackinac Race Committee for too many years to list. He is always willing to help with anything that is asked of him. His institutional knowledge of the race is invaluable.

Although this year he “retired” from serving on the 3rd Watch Finish Line Team, his Finish Line Captain Patti Kommel offered the following comments, “He has been a prized member of my 3rd watch finish line team as a spotter - his keen eye and knowledge of the boats has helped immensely to determine who is on the horizon. He will be sorely missed by our team for his witty comments and eager participation; we would welcome him back in a flash if he changes his mind. Congrats from our whole team to him for this honor – well deserved!”

This year he will be at his long-term post as Race Officer in Charge on the Starting Line Pin Boat. It is my great honor to have chosen as the 2019 Race Committee Person of the Year – Gary Viola!

Straits of Mackinac Society 2019 – Old Forts

The Straits of Mackinac Society was founded by Bayview Yacht Club to honor all Mackinac Race Committee personnel who have served on the committee for 15 years. Members of the Straits of Mackinac Society are known as “Old Forts”: our heroes who have worked in the background with such dedication for so many years deserve proper recognition. Without their untiring effort, there would not be a starting cannon, or any race at all.

We wish to thank the many men and women who have served Bayview Yacht Club and the sailing fraternity over the years by honoring them with membership in the Straits of Mackinac Society.

The Bayview Mackinac Hall of Fame Trophy – aka the “Old Bear Trophy” was donated by the Bayer Family in honor of the first recipient: Com. Charles M. Bayer. The trophy is perpetual and will be awarded to select individuals in honor of their support, dedication, and outstanding contribution to the success and continuation of the Bayview Yacht Club Port Huron to Mackinac Race. Nominees should have completed at least 10 BYC Mackinac Races, and brought honor to themselves and to the race.

In the first four years, up to five people will be elected to be named on the trophy and inducted into the Mackinac Race Hall of Fame. Then, beginning in 2019, only one person could be elected annually.

The Deed of gift indicates that the Bayview Mackinac Old Goats Society will handle the nomination and election process for the “Old Bear Trophy”. The selection committee will include Old Goat Committee Members, Grand Rams, and volunteers who will elect recipients each year. The nomination period starts June 1st and ends the day before the Bayview Mackinac Race each year. The selection committee will meet before August 20th to elect that year’s recipient(s).

If you would like to nominate someone (living or deceased) for this honor, please fill out the nomination form available at byc.com, and return it to the BYC office before the beginning of the race.

This year the Bayview Yacht Club Mackinac Hall of Fame Selection Committee is proud to announce that Com. John S. Barbour, George “Twister” S. Hendrie, Jr., Tom “TK” K. Lowry, Dr. Douglas L. Wake and Dr. Margaret J. Wake have been selected as recipients of the “Old Bear Trophy.”

Fred W. Kreger sailed his first Mackinac Race in 1952 on the schooner Spindrift. Fred raced in 65 Bayview Mackinac Races and 47 Chicago Mackinac Races and is an Old Goat, Double Goat and a Grand Ram. He has been on winners 22 times. Fred sailed with Hank Burkard for 28 years. He has raced on 25 different boats from the 36’ Yare to the 60’ trimaran Earth Voyager. He also sailed 25 SORC Races, 4 Jamaica Races, 5 Key West Races and was on 4 Canada’s Cup Teams. Fred continues to work as PRO for the Junior Sailors.

Russel H. Nutter, Jr. was BYC Mackinac Race Chairman in both 1987 & 1995. As Chairman he started the Cruising Division & the Open Division. He also changed the starting line to the shore side of the freighter channel to better promote the sport by allowing more public viewing of the race. He encouraged the title sponsor to add the finish line bouy off of Mission Point. He selected the First Woman Principal Race Officer of the Bayview Mackinac Race. He sailed in more than 20 BYC Macs and even more CYC Macs. Russ ran the 50-footer Class, which competed all over the world but Bayview was always his home port.

John “Captain Chrome” F. Rummel has been sailing since he was 9 years old and has competed in nearly 50 BYC Mackinac Races. On his first Mack Race in 1945, he was on Manitou, a 64’ boat out of Chicago, one of the six boats that finished the BYC Mackinac Race out of the 55 boats that started. He sailed on Blitzen with Russ Pouliot in his early years of racing. John owned Morning Star, a 39’ sloop in which he won many Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie Races. John’s next boat was Black Magic, a two-ton Kaufman boat, designed for the Canada’s Cup in 1977 and which had the best won/loss record in the pre-trials that year. Black Magic then went on to win many international races. John’s current boat is Magic Star, a NA40 in which he won the 2004 BYC Mackinac Race Overall.

Frederick J. Somes is an Old Goat and was a past Chairman of the Old Goats Society. Fred sailed on a Cal 40 called Winsome and Manitou in his early years. Fred bought his first “Hotspur,” an Ericson 39’ in which he won the BYC Mackinac Race several times, including a Super Mac in 1976. In 1978 Fred was one of the founding members of the NA40 Class including working on design details for the deck and foils. He also negotiated with Morgan Yachts in the construction process of the NA40. In 1982 Hotspur won her class in both the BYC and CYC Mackinac Races and won the NA40 Nationals in Charlevoix. “Fred exemplifies the people who make sailing such a great sport.”

Com. Perce “Percy” C. Williamson was one of the four founding members of Bayview Yacht Club and designed the Bayview Burgee. He and Russ Pouliot were the originators of the idea that Bayview Yacht Club should sponsor and conduct the Race to Mackinac Island each year. Percy was the Bayview Mackinac Race Chairman seven times (1926 through 1932) until he became Commodore in 1933. He sailed in the first 35 BYC Mackinac Races from 1925 to 1959 and skippered his own boat all but two times. He won his class four times starting in 1926 on his boat “Charlyn.” He then sailed his boat “Rainbow IV” to first place victories in ’40, ’42, and ’43. In 1958 the Detroit Times referred to him as “Mr. Mackinac.”

Congratulations to the 2018 BYC Mackinac Hall of Fame Inductees!

The 100th Bayview to Mackinac Race ~ Lance Smotherman, Governor - Bayview Yacht Club

On Saturday July 25, 1925, 12 boats were towed out into Lake Huron, with their engines sealed, for the start of the first Bayview to Mackinac Race. In a blustery 261 mile race riddled with gale force winds and heavy seas, the 32-foot sloop Bernida crossed the finish line at Mackinac Island early Monday evening, and the race hasn’t stopped since. Not even WWII would interrupt the race as then President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself directed BYC to carry on with the Bluewater classic.

In July of 2024 Bayview Yacht Club will host its 100th consecutive running

of the Bayview to Mackinac Race. Believe it or not, it’s just five short years away and we are already making plans. Bayview is assembling a Blue-Ribbon Panel including world renowned racers, leaders, and legends of our sport along with promotional and subject matter experts, all of whom cover every facet in the development of what will be the greatest celebration the Great Lakes and our sport has ever seen.

We are working with top international teams to bring the biggest names and highest level programs from around the world to shine a spotlight

directly on our wonderful blue water event. Similarly, past participants, skippers, shipmates, family, and friends from everywhere will converge on us reviving previous glory.

Certainly more details are to come, but we anticipate limiting entries to 400, and fully expect to be over subscribed. While the Bayview Mackinac Race is already a treasure enjoyed annually, the 100th will be an experience of a lifetime. So I am planting the seed: start your planning now, and when the time comes, take care of business lest you end up watching from the beach. z

BYC001 at RBYC:Making the Most of Membershipin Mumbai

~ By Sandra Svoboda

The conversation could have been at anyone’s home yacht club: a long-time gentlemanly(ish) member recalling long-past stories for the entertainment of a new female in the bar … while properly proportioned adult beverages were consumed by all.

But this encounter included Asian-accented storytelling about the last British troops exiting the Indian subcontinent from the porch where we were standing at the Royal Bombay Yacht Club on Mumbai Harbor.

That’s not a story I’ve heard at a Great Lakes bar – although the narrator’s wife had a familiar look that said, “Thank you for talking to my insufferable husband.”

Yacht club reciprocity is a clear perk of our memberships and monthly dues at our home institutions. If you haven’t used it, get on it! We can roll in to other clubs around the planet, bypass the “Private – Members Only” signs, and find our ilk. Maybe it’s during a regatta when we feel like escaping the “tent” for some civility of the dining room. Other times it’s while traveling and seeking out our own people, wherever we are.

And knowing the universal “charms” of the sailing sorority/fraternity, we can comfortably assume we’re going to have a pretty good time there, even if visiting sailors often pay a surcharge on our libations.

Getting in to the Royal Bombay Yacht Club on a trip to India in November 2017 took a little doing. Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, where I’ve been a member for more than two decades, is not on RBYC’s list of partnered organizations. Shocking, I know. Those RBYC affiliates are pretty much scattered around the Commonwealth and share “Royal” in their names.

But an email sent in advance from Bayview’s GM, me somewhat dramatically waving around the printout of that exchange, a carefully balanced attitude of respect and yachtiness, and patiently waiting while two employees insisted on searching for “Bayview” as an affiliate in a giant, aging ledger kept at the front desk was a formula for entry for my husband and me.

(At every other Club I’ve been to, all it took was my BYC and American Express cards…)

Eventually, after inspection of the email printout, my membership credentials, our passports and many smiles, we got past the front desk ready to explore the raj-era Clubhouse. Inside, the gin drinks cost a fraction of the rupees we paid at the hotel. The experience was priceless. In fact, we’ve now been to RBYC on TWO trips.

We learned the rules of cricket at the bar with two young globe-trotting Indian tech executive who split time there at in New York City. We showed off our Bollywood dance moves to a crowd that is probably still laughing about us. We did a burgee exchange with RBYC’s sailing director, in fine nautical tradition, and we tried to explain freshwater and how we share a river with Canada.

There aren’t many times I’ve been first at anything at Bayview, but I’m BYC001 in that giant ledger.

And I wonder about who might become No. 2?

Bayview Yacht Club

It’s all about sailing. Why do people choose a yacht club? We all want

to share something we enjoy, something that others enjoy with us. We want to learn, we want to improve, we want to bring our sport to others. And we want

to be the best we can be. The Bells Beer Bayview Mackinac Race is our biggest,

but just a portion of what we do. Bayview sponsors the best races in the Midwest, including the, Bayview One Design, the North Channel, BYC Long Distance, D-Cup Match racing and Women on Water regatta. This August we host the US Women’s Match Racing Championship on our Ultimate 20 fleet. Bayview also has Adult Learn to Sail programs, and one of the best Junior Sailing programs around. When not racing, Bayview has winter seminars, family activities, a golf league, and kids’ Halloween and Christmas parties. The Club itself sports an excellent dining room, along with the legendary Bayview Bar. Even our Clubhouse is about to be renovated and expanded, keeping the friendly, welcoming atmosphere we love. Need to host an event? We can host a meeting of 10 to a room filled with about 200 people enjoying a view of the Detroit River. Reciprocity? All over the world.

For the members at Bayview, it isn’t about all the benefits. It’s the sailing and the people. Bayview sailors compete all over the world, in the best regattas. It is a privilege and an honor to share a drink and a chat with competitors from Americas Cup to the Olympics, or have friends that just returned from ocean distance racing or in the Caribbean. If you want to be a better sailor, it’s a good idea to hang with the best.

The Bayview Membership & Member Services Committee invites all sailors to check us out. Stop by on Hitchhiker Thursdays and sail with us off the dock. Come on our bike ride, or our kayaking adventures. Come check out our plans for our new clubhouse renovation. Join our regattas. Drop in on our parties. If you like us, come join us. But above all, help us all keep Sailing the great sport and experience we know it is.

If interested in more information about membership email the Membership and Member Services Committee at [email protected] or visit https://byc.com/Membership. z

Consider:For nearly a century, Bayview has held one of the longest

fresh water races in the country, the Bayview Mackinac Race. The race serves as a foundation of our sailing season. Thoughts turn to Mackinac as early as New Year’s. Early on in the year, conversations can be heard about boat modifications or the purchase of new equipment or, say, a new #1 genoa, which will give a boat that extra edge to win a division or perhaps overall honors. Once spring comes around, crews start to come together, and they start to hone their skills. They sail together in preparatory races. They set their roles on the boat. They race The Race, four hours on and four hours off in the classic watch system for somewhere around 35 hours straight. They’ll do it all again in the years hence. And those sailors who are so committed to the race that they sail 25 of them, they earn “Old Goat” status, a true honor, though with the roast that inductees get at their induction, it might not feel that way. Bayview has its irreverent side.

You’ll find great sailors on the Bayview Mackinac Race courses (there are two) from many different clubs and areas, but you’ll find great sailors, specifically, at Bayview as well. It is not uncommon to have a conversation with a world champion sailor at the bar on a Tuesday night after the Adult Learn to Sail classes. Bayview members also rub elbows with an Olympian or two. There are match-race (one boat vs another boat) standouts among the Bayview membership. Local races are dominated by Bayview boats.

Even though the Bayview Mackinac Race serves as the foundation for Bayview’s sailing world, it is not the club’s sole focus. Bayview also has a vibrant match racing series of events, which begins with May’s Spring Invitational (SI). The crew that wins the SI earns a spot in the internationally recognized Detroit Cup, a match race event that regularly hosts crews from around the world. Sandwiched between those two events, this year, will be the National Women’s Match Race Championship. The Bayview grounds offer an astounding vantage point from which to take in this world class match racing. There are few better experiences in the sailing world than enjoying a nice lunch while watching champion match racers try to out-maneuver each other a few feet away right off the Bayview wall.

The members of Bayview also take great pride in their Bayview One Design Regatta (BOD), held in early June. This race takes place over the course of a weekend and offers

unparalleled racing opportunity for boats that are exactly the same. Much of the racing done by the keelboats in the U.S. involves a somewhat complicated rating system that allows boats that are not the same to compete against one another. Not so in the BOD. The sailors race boats that are identical in design, and whoever crosses the line first after five or so legs of close racing, wins. It’s exciting stuff.

Racing, while omnipresent, is not always formal at BYC. Most Thursdays, the fleet gathers for an informal race in front of the club, in the river. The boats don’t set spinnakers during the races; the racing takes place mostly around government marks after a long day at the office. Evenings at the bar after the short race can even be longer. It’s one of the best times at Bayview.

Yet to feed those champion match race, BOD, Mackinac Race crews, and even Thursday night crews, Bayview has to have a quality junior sailing program, and to be sure, it does. Bayview consistently turns out quality juniors. Bayview’s junior program, Team Bayview, as it’s known, races mainly Optimists, 420s, and Lasers. We take part in competitions against the other yacht clubs on Lake St. Clair. Bayview also has a successful youth learn-to-sail program that exposes youngsters to the sport, two weeks at a time. The most impressive part of Bayview’s junior program is its instructors. This year all returning Bayview coaches are US sailing level II coaches, and Bayview boasts the best coach-to-student ratio on the Lake St. Clair. What’s more, Bayview’s coaches are impressive sailors in the collegiate ranks. They represent Hobart College, Clemson University (the captain), Michigan State University (again, the captain), and University of Michigan, and they will impart their knowledge to the Bayview youngsters. We also have a standout Canadian sailor serving as the coaches’ on-the-water head instructor.

Teaching sailing for Bayview does go beyond teaching young people how to sail and how to race sailboats. Our Adult Learn to Sail Program is a mighty success. Meeting one evening per week for two hours, Bayview members volunteer to offer nonmember adults an introduction to sailing.

Bayview Yacht Club is indeed for sailors. From the Mackinac Race to match racing to Team Bayview, if members of Bayview aren’t actually racing sailboats, they’re talking about it, and if they’re not talking about racing sailboats, they’re probably thinking about it. And I can’t think of a better topic to occupy one’s time. z

Bayview Yacht Club: Sailors Only~ By Mike Cowan, Bayview Yacht Club Sailing Director

Bayview Yacht Club is for sailors. The members are committed to racing sailboats and to furthering the growth of the sport of sailing. And it is this commitment that has made the club one of the premier sailboat clubs in our area and indeed, the country.

The Society of Mackinac Island Old Goats hopes that you have an enjoyable and successful Mackinac Race. Don’t wait until your 25th BYC Mackinac Race to start filling out your Old Goats Society Application Form. This is a Corinthian Sport and your word is good enough for us. Most of us remember our first and last races and years where we did particularly well. Then you need to start filling out the blank years by thinking about the different boats that you raced on in a specific year. After a while you will start to remember how many races you did on an individual boat. Pretty soon you will have it all filled in or be able to contact skippers, friends or family who may be able to help you jog your memory. There is no giant database with all the thousands of crew members who raced on thousands of boats dating back to 1925 when BYC held it’s first Mackinac Race. We have a difficult time keeping track of the thousands of sailors racing in the current year. So . . . Start now to keep track of your

Mackinac Race participation so that when you get to Race 25, you will be all set to send in your completed application form (due by September 1st ) and be inducted into the BYC Mackinac Old Goats Society. There will be a photograph of all Bayview Mackinac Old Goats, Grand Rams and Double Goats taken on Mackinac Island prior to the Island Awards Party. Look for the Old Goats Banner near the stage and listen for the announcement. We will gather near the Banner around 12:30 PM. New Old Goats and New Grand Rams will be Officially Inducted into the Society of Old Goats at the BYC Mackinac Awards Dinner in the Fall. Also held that same afternoon of the Awards Dinner is the New Old Goats and Grand Rams Cocktail Party. You will be informed about the details of these events early in September. Old Goats and Grand Rams also receive invitations to Old Goat Luncheons held in the Fall and Winter and the Old Goats Roast held in the Spring at Bayview Yacht Club.

All Old Goats, Grand Rams, families, and friends are invited to the Roast for an evening of fun. There is also recognition for those sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac Races AND 25 Chicago Mackinac Races who are called Double Goats. Please contact Chicago Yacht Club directly if you qualify for this award. If you have completed 50 Bayview Mackinac Races, please fill out a Grand Ram Application Form (due by May 1st of each year) found on the Bayview Mackinac Race Website under the Race Info tab. Please inform us of any changes in personal information by sending us an email to [email protected] or [email protected]. You can also call the BYC Office at 313-822-1853. To order an Old Goat blazer patch, Bayview Old Goat logo clothing, or other Old Goat merchandise, please see the Old Goat/Grand Ram Merchandise order form on the Bayview Mackinac Race website www.bycmack.com under the Race Info tab. The Society of Grand Rams was founded to honor those sailors who have completed 50 or more BYC Mackinac Races. Having sailed 50 or more Mackinac Races requires more than one hundred twenty days on the water and some fourteen thousand miles of sailing. They have likely endured 100 thunderstorms and 500 or more watch changes.

If you are approaching this milestone, please fill out a Grand Rams Application form, available online at www.bycmack.com under the Race Info tab, and return it to the club by May 1st in time to be included in all the celebrations for the BYC Mackinac Race that year.

H ow do you generate greater interest in sailing in one of the best sports cities in America? You get the Detroit Lions, Pistons, Red Wings and Tigers involved.

That’s what the Detroit Sports Media (DSM) did when they brought the Pro-Team Challenge concept to Bayview eight years ago. The DSM is the oldest organization of its type in the USA and its members broadcast all of the major collegiate and pro-team sports across Michigan.

This “race within a race” pits four radomly selected boats, each representing one of Detroit’s professional sports teams, against each other. “It began with a degree of skepticism” said DSM Marketing Director, Bill Harrington. “Skippers didn’t know what they were getting involved in. Today, however, the Pro-Team Challenge is an event that creates excitement among all of the Mackinac yachts and crews”.

Boats are selected in a random drawing by Lions, Pistons, Red Wings and Tigers representatives at the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac media luncheon. Skippers then visit their specific team facilities and receive their shirts, hats and team flag. Because the Tigers play during the summer, the skipper receives his team gear in an in-game, on-field ceremony.

Based on each boats’ corrected finish time, the winning boat crew and their guests are hosted at a game and recognized in a

pre-game ceremony. Winning boats have included EPIC (Tigers 2010), SORCERY (Red Wings 2011), NOTSO EZ MONEY (Red Wings 2012), SHENANIGAN (Lions 2013), MOSTLY HARMLESS (Pistons 2014), LEGEND (Lions 2015), NAUTI BOYS (Pistons 2016) and MR. BILL’S WILD RIDE (Lions 2017), VAITE (Red Wings 2018).

As one of the previous participating skippers said, “This is good for the whole sporting community. It adds pleasure and interest in the race. We’re very happy to be representing one of Detroit’s Pro teams”. z
