Broadcast Media Affects AudienceDifferently Than The Printed Press

Broadcasting and the printed press have many differences. One obvious difference is that the press new is written on paper, while broadcasting is live on TV. Some popular press names are The New York Times, Newsweek, Washington Post, and The Guardian. Some popular broadcast names are Good morning America, NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox News. Different people have various opinions. Some think that broadcasting is better than the printed

press and others think the opposite. The printed press industry has lost a fifth of its journalist since 2001. The internet media has been growing its viewers and has been taking over the printed press. Broadcasting focuses more on the visual and auditory aspect of the news program. The printed press will target on the future, which will make you more aware of what's coming. In the end they are both good sources. They both let you know what is going on in the world today.

Melissa 5K Run Set for March 24;Teams Forming Now for FundraiserBy Austin Miller & Kylie Kroese

The Annual Melissa 5K Run is set for March 24, and with all the hype, teams are already forming. Each year, the 5K event brings in money for the school district. It also promotes health

and fitness. While individuals can participate, teams are encouraged to sign up as well. “I liked the race, because it was fun to have competition, and I got third place last year,” Abbie Chaloupka said. “I was surprised and excited,” Chaloupka

added. Some participants don’t want to run, so they will walk. The Drama Club is one of the groups participating, to show their support. Other teachers are forming teams with their students, including Sydney Melvin Gasaway, Debbie

Duguid, Lyssa Broach, and Alex Eichel, to name a few. Whether you walk, jog, or run, all are encouraged to participate and get across the finish line. The person who guesses closest to how long Coach Castor will take to finish will receive a cash reward of $50.

Death of the Dab: Overdone Dance Move Is Laid To Rest

anymore. The dab is sort of like the expression, “Gag me with a spoon,” or “Totally tubular.” They had their place in history, but now, it’s time to bury them, put them in a museum, or store them in the annals of “what not to do or say anymore.” In short, the dab is dead. No need to resurrect it, refer to it, spend time with it, or bring it up ever again.

It must be a nervous reaction to the redundant movement that no one really needs to see. Like ever again. It is time to rise up and

The Dab needs to stop. If this monstrosity of a dance continues, I have no doubt that the world will end. Well, maybe not. But it is certainly highly irritating, and it is so yesterday. The dab is nothing but an addicting dance move designed to do keep the participants dabbing.

Dab, my dear reader, spelled backwards, is Bad.Say it with me: Dab is bad. Dab is bad. Folks who are out of touch, still use the dreadful dab as their “go to” move. The worst part about it is, they laugh when they do it. And others laugh. Why?

Valentine’s Day is on the Way By: Maddison Harper & Rozlyn Brown

It is almost that very special time of the year, when Melissa Middle School Cardinals show each other how much they care. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner-- February 14, to be exact. Get ready for boxes of chocolates, teddy bears, and roses. There are different names for Valentine’s Day. It was originally called Saint Valentine's Day, but was later shortened to Valentine's Day. Some people also call it the Feast of Saint Valentine’s Day. Even though different cultures and people have different names for Valentine's day and celebrate in a different type of manner, we all celebrate love. Valentine’s was first started by Saint Valentinus, and originally it was for soldiers who were not allowed to marry. Every year, more than 11 million Valentine’s cards are exchanged by people all around the world. Over 50% of Valentine’s Day

cards are purchased six days before. Also, getting Valentines cards is the second most popular greetings card occasion. More than 58 million pounds of chocolate candy is sold during the week of Valentine’s Day. That means they have to make about 413,280 pounds of chocolate every 140 months or about 11 years from start to finish. We asked students at MMS why they like Valentine's Day. “I like Valentine's Day because I get a lot of chocolate.” Halie Thanakeo said. “I like Valentine’s Day because you get candy, chocolate and flowers,” Kate McGill said.

Valentine's Day is special because it gives people an opportunity to share their love with one another, it also gives them an opportunity to love those who may have lost their loved ones. “I like Valentine's Day because it’s full of love and I can spend it with the people I love most,” Abbey Bell said. Valentine's Day is remembered as the time of love. We all love to receive but the better joy is when you give.

Some students at MMS have decided to celebrate Valentine's Day with a gift exchange. Gift exchanges are one of the many activities people do on Valentines Day.

“ My friends and I decided to do a gift exchange to show how much we care for each other.”

--Natalie Juarez Secret admirers are

people that like one another, but doesn't want the person to know. Often, secret admirers will send small gifts or objects to each other without leaving a name. Most secret admirers will leave behind a letter and put anonymous as the name

“In fifth grade someone left me a plastic bag in my cubby and I went home and opened it. There was a card that said will you be my Valentine with ferrero Rocha chocolates,” Halie Thanakeo said.

the newspaper,” Hodge commented. Fair puts an appropriate amount of pressure on herself, to ensure that she does her best. She hopes to represent her school and her team in a great way, and make her teammates proud. According to Fair’s teammates and classmates, she is a force to be reckoned with. “She is one of those players that puts effort in at practice and in her own time,” Kindred Johnson said. “Shyla is very strong in the points of driving the ball to the basket, free throws, and defense,” Kylie Kroese said. Melissa Middle School’s administrators are proud of Fair. “Shyla has done great this season so far and I can’t wait to see what’s comes nextfor her,” Principal Jim Miller said.

Girls Basketball is one of the sports that shows off Cardinal power. Shyla Fair is one of those athletes on the team that comes across being an underestimated player, but turns out to be a favorite. “I’m so thankful for this opportunity to be in the newspaper because it is a nice feeling knowing my school has recognized me,” Shyla Fair said. Melissa Middle School is honored to have Fair in their school’s environment. “Shyla Fair is one of the hardest working athletes at MMS and she continues that trait with everything she does,” Kate McGill said. “Shyla is a very skilled, dedicated, and passionate about every sport she plays especially basketball,” Kaylin Wells said Shyla has won over lots of the community because of her fantastic skills and attitude.

Over the years the makeup industry has had many breakthroughs, some of which we wish had not happened. But some of these big trends have been enhanced to match today's makeup techniques.

Urban Decay Cosmetics has teamed up with makeup guru Kristen Leanne to create a whimsically vibed collection. Leanne's pallets include a series of brightly colored shadows to not so neutral lipsticks.

Kristen Leanne is a beauty influencer known for her free spirit, oversharing, and colorful personality.

The 29 year old beauty vlogger started her channel in 2014 and has excelled in popularity since then. She now has almost a million Instagram followers and 504,145

Leanne's creative style caught the eyes of Urban Decay producers. They conspired with her utilizing her artistry and creativity every step of the way. The line just dropped on January 6.

Oxymorons Create A Fine MessBy Jackson Counce& Staff Contributor

The English language is a funny thing--funny, meaning complicated, frustrating, and confusing. Don’t get me wrong. Many literary works of art are filled with majestic, beautiful language that could crack a heart of stone, and bring a warrior to his knees. The problem is, it can be quite confusing. Take, for instance,

Do you miss the age of big hair, colorful shadows, and velvet everything? Well lately some of the biggest trends from “Generation X” are making a way back into today's fashion industry.

With just a trip to the mall you can see teens wearing chokers, baggy jeans (now called mom jeans), and fishnet stockings. Clothing

stores, such as American Eagle, are now selling velvet tops and stylish chokers. Celebrities can even be spotted wearing denim on denim and bright white sneakers out in public and to parties.

So, it's now safe to pull out those dusty checkered vans, roll up your tees sleeves, and still come out looking sleek and stylish.

But you must understand. Oxymorons make no sense. For example, how can something be clearly misunderstood? Is it clear or is it misunderstood? Pardon me while I go to the doctor to check my blood pressure. I just might be coming down with something serious. I’m afraid that I have Oxymoronitis.

one of the most perplexing types of idioms-a foreigner’s nightmare- the oxymoron. Let’s start with the most basic sayings used in English everyday conversation--That’s pretty ugly. Imagine that you’re a foreigner trying to get a date. You say, “Hello.” Your potential date says, “Please. You’re pretty ugly.” Now, you have the

translating dilemma: Was that a compliment or an insult? You ask yourself, “Am I pretty? Am I ugly? Will I be getting this date?” The whole antonyms thing is notably confusing. Two opposite words to emphasize one meaning? Take this second example: That is seriously funny. Is it serious?! Is it funny?! The mind boggles! Sorry, I lost my cool.

How Dogs are Important to People

By Mia Dean &Yisel Reynoso

People have lived with dogs for many centuries, and have been best friends to us ever since. They have affected us in many positive ways that we can depend on dogs. Dogs may not speak, but they say a lot by their actions. They are really energetic and playful, and can really lighten your mood when you’re depressed. Although, many

breeds of dogs can be life savers. For example, Kaze, a Labrador Retriever, (bottom right) saved a woman’s life who has been missing for several days. Kaze was sent on a mission, and was able to find the missing woman in a coma state. If it weren’t for Kaze the woman could have possibly died. This shows that dogs can be heroic in many ways. Dogs of any size can be heroic even the really

small dogs. Therapy dogs can help disabled or ill people by just being there for them, for emotional and physical support. They are extremely patient and loving, and just well natured in general. They can help from helping in retirement home to helping in a disaster areas you can count on dogs. Dogs are important to us because they are willing to do anything for us. Without dogs some of us wouldn’t be where we are.

By Abbie Chaloupka,Kate McGill &Sydney Freeland Our local downtown bakery hit has affected us with its many delicious pies. Emporium Pies is located at 107 Tennessee Street, Mckinney, and has been popular for our local students. The pies they have all year round are Lord of the Pies, the Smooth Operator, and the

Drunken Nut. The reason these are the only year round pies is because they have easy access to the fresh ingredients in these pies all year. The Smooth Operator is a sweet and creamy chocolate pie with a salty pretzel crust. The Drunken Nut is a pecan pie with a flakey shortbread crust. It is sweetened with brown sugar and is a delight to eat. Lord of the Pies is a deep

dish apple pie. It has a buttery and flakey crust with caramelized chopped apples inside. It is topped with a cinnamon streusel. The rest of their pies change with the season “Our pies are seasonal and the reason that we do that is because we want to use fresh ingredients, natural from around the area” Jacob,

Emporium Pies employee, said. Some ingredients in the seasonal pies can only be accessible in those months. So to keep it fresh they only keep those pies in that specific month. Over all Emporium Pies has delicious pies. We hope other will try out the yummy pies.

Based around mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, U.S. history and in technology and engineering literacy. A successful NAEP involving many, including researchers, state education officials, contractors, policymakers, students, and teachers. The first national assessments were held in 1969. Social media can be a very dangerous place. It can also be very interesting. You can learn about people's lives, and the things that they did that day if they post it on social media.

Social media can also have some negative effects. People on social media can find out where you live if you have a license plate or your home address in the

background of your photo, and if they do find out where you live, predators could rob your home address or hurt you and your family.

Social media has a bad history of bullying. Some people on social media use it as a site to make fun of people, calling them names, this kind of bullying is called cyber bullying. Sometimes bullying can be brought into the real world. Sadly sometimes this can't be fixed.
