Espresso Phonics Teaching Notes
Summary Three books each comprising:
A decodable story for children to read independently p3-21 A game or quiz to practise reading words containing new graphemes p22-23 Answers to the quiz and teaching notes p24
What the children should already know The simple sounds; a single sound for each single letter including x and q. (Note: the sounds traditionally taught for the letter x and q are two phonemes /k//s/ and /q//w/.)
That to read we must blend the sounds together, left to right through the whole word. That ck, ff, ll, ss, zz are double letter sounds and that we say just one sound /k/,/f/,/l/,/s/ and /z/. (Note: we say sze not zuh for z.) How to blend and segment CVC words. How to give the sound when the following graphemes are shown: qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er.
How to apply their knowledge of blending and segmenting to reading and spelling simple two-syllable words and captions, e.g. boxer, turnip, fish and chips for dinner.
Letter names and how to read and spell some tricky words. How to blend and read words containing adjacent consonants (CVCC/CCVC words) and some polysyllabic words. How to read the high frequency words listed above. Beginning to be able to give the sound when the following graphemes are shown: ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e.
Activity 1In this activity children practise reading and writing words with some of the new graphemes (split digraphs) taken from the three books: a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e.
In Fill in the Gaps, children write a word from the box to complete each sentence. They should still blend through each word to check that it makes sense.
In Sound Sort, children sort the words above into the sound grid below.
Activity 2In this activity children practise reading and writing words with some of the new graphemes taken from the three books: ay, wh, ue, ir, ou, aw, ph, ew, ea.
In Make a Word, children add a grapheme to make a word. In Wordsearch, children find the words they have made in the grid. Can they make their own words containing these graphemes?
Phonics checkIn this check children must read a series of words using their decoding skills. This is similar to the Phonics Screening Check that will be administered in Y1 to all children and provides a good opportunity for children to practise these early phonic skills.
There are two sets of 6 words and 6 pseudo-words for the children to read. All the words contain a selection of new graphemes: ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e. The pseudo-words ensure that children are decoding and not repeating words they have learnt already or remembered. There are no pictures to ensure that children are decoding and not using visual clues to guess a word.
Use only one check in one session. Have two copies of the check printed out; one for the child to read and one for you to make notes on for each child.
Children who are not able to confidently say the sounds for these words, blend them and read them may need further practice to secure their knowledge of letters and sounds.
