Following up on complaints from local people, the Department of Conservation is looking into a vehicle track to the beach formed across Conservation Land at Uretiti leading from the property of Paul Glamuzina. Mr. Glamuzina, who owns an earthmoving company in Kumeu in west Auckland, purchased 2.35 hectares of land at Uretiti from the Presbyterian Church in May 2013. Harvey Linton donated the land to the church in 1953 for use as a youth Bible camp. The vehicle accessway runs from Mr. Glamuzina’s property along the Tahuna Walkway and down on to the beach. The walking trail has been widened by a tractor and, as the trail crosses a particularly steep foredune (inaccessible to vehicles) before descending to the beach, a tractor - wide rampway has been formed in the dunes alongside, sloping northwards and cutting across the bottom of the walking trail. Senior Biodiversity Ranger for DOC Nigel Miller said, while negotiations with Mr. Glamuzina are in progress,
accessway. However, he said, “We will always discourage people driving over sand dunes as these are very fragile ecosystems and the damage vehicles cause can lead to coastal erosion.”The Department of Conservation’s Bream Bay
places for vehicles to access the beach of Bream Bay.

It’s been a busy summer and the sand dunes of Bream Bay have been getting a battering. Walk along the beach in front of the Department of Conservation’s Uretiti campground and there are numerous trails over and through the dunes, some of them only several metres apart.
beach. There is usually a game of touch or football going on when I go down for an afternoon dip in the sea. There were many families there over Anniversary weekend, making the most of the last of the school holidays. One evening I spoke to a very picturesque elderly Dutch couple sitting in deck chairs wearing sunglasses
were here for the summmer visiting a son who was now living in Auckland. I wished I had my camera they looked so composed and stylish, contrasting nicely with the casualness of everyone else. They were amazed at our beautiful beach. Sometimes it takes visitors from other places to make us realize the value of what we have. This beach is our greatest asset and we need to look after it. That long expanse of sweeping dunes with the softly toned tumbleweed plant, spinifex sending its protective tendrils out over the foredunes is something we should value very highly. The spinifex is interspersed here and there with the lighter green,

They do not cope very well with crowds of people walking all over them and heavy vehicles are a disaster. We cannot let ignorant people drive all over our dunes. If you want to know the kind of damage vehicles cause, go and look at the entranceway beside the Ruakaka
Racecourse.Paul Glamuzina, the new owner of the Uretiti Bible Class land, is not the only person guilty of this kind of destruction. Down at Mair Rd. the New Zealand

someone starts shouting about legal action the DOC, understandably, not wanting to waste its much-reduced funds on legal fees, becomes very cautious. That leaves us, the caring public (or do-gooders), to do this work and to face up to these belligerent people who insist they have a God-given right to do what ever they want regardless of the damage they cause on Conservation Land. It doesn’t all have to be shouting matches though. I am

What is believed to be the
ceremony to take place in Bream Bay was held between Waipu identity Rosemary Neave and Cynthia Roberts at the Waipu Boat Club on
Family and friends from London, Florida, Melbourne, Tasmania and all over New Zealand travelled to Waipu for the occasion.Rosemary described the event as a “celebration of Waipu creativity”.
Welford decorated the space, the restaurant Madly Indian provided the entrees, Graham Spears ran the spit, Elaine Goldsmith decorated a fabulous cake representing mountains to the sea and Alice and Peter Grant’s coffee wagon Zippy provided coffees and ice creams. A ukelele group formed for the occasion played and sang and Fraser Sim piped Rosemary and Cynthia up the river to the boat club
once again reel to the sound of 100 plus pipers. The Auckland Centre Provincial Pipe Band Champion-ships have been moved from Whangarei’s Pohe Island to the Waipu Caledonian Park. Someone forgot to pass the message on about the upcoming event at Pohe Island and the Whangarei District Council’s Parks Department sprayed out the grass there in preparation for a re-plant.Whangarei’s loss, however, is Waipu’s gain and at 11am on Saturday 15 February, 11 competing bands, mostly from Auckland but with one from as far away as Te Kuiti, will march through Waipu and into the Caledonian Park. The piping competition will begin at 12.45. Each band
will be put through its paces with a march, a strathspey, a reel and a medley. The Whangarei Pipe Band, which includes in its ranks many of Waipu’s own, will be the last on stage with a medley at 3.34pm.

Letters to the Editor are very welcome
I am writing as a responsible dog owner to those who ob-viously are not. While walking your dogs in Waihoihoi Park in the centre of Waipu please take some plastic bags with you (we all have them, bread bags, grocery bags etc) and pick up what your dog leaves behind. You all know who you are and I know who you are also and it would be greatly appreciated by all those who use the park if you started cleaning up after you dogs. I take my lab for a walk twice to three times a day down at the park and without fail there is fresh dog waste on the grass, and I don’t take kindly to having to explain to visitors with kids that it isn’t my dogs waste that their
and pick it up as I always carry a good supply of plastic bags. Come on people we all like to use the park and it would be a shame if we with dogs got banned from using it because of those that don’t clean up!

Dear irresponsible dog owners
Thank you to all those people who have made possible a “great season for Fairy Terns... the best since 1984”.The hard work put in to help these little birds raise it’s young is much appreciated by many people I’m sure.Thank you also to the Bream Bay News for keeping us updated.Happy New Year to all. Racecourse. The statement below was agreed on for publication in the Bream Bay News by members of the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust :“The Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust thinks it is outrageous that Mr. Glamuzina should have formed a vehicle access for himself over public Conservation Land. The Tahuna Walkway is for walkers only. It was never intended as a vehicle access. The vehicle track over the foredunes is of particular concern as this is likely to result in a big sand blowout. The fact there are many other abuses of the dune system along the length of Bream Bay does not give Mr. Glamuzina a right to cause further damage.”Phoned at his west Auckland home and invited to comment for this article Mr. Glamuzina said, “ There are too many do - gooders at that place. They think they own the place. There have been all sorts of bullshit things said but when I front up and threaten to take people to court they all duck for cover.”Mr. Glamuzina said he had legal access across the Department of Conservation land to the beach. The issue at stake is whether or not this easement allows for vehicle access in the dunes.
As he does not have an email address, The Bream Bay News editor took a copy of this article to Mr. Glamuzina at his Uretiti property to read prior to publication. He again threatened legal action, this time against the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust and ordered the editor, who he had invited to meet him there, off his land. He said, “You are just jealous because you do not have an easement to the beach.”To the reply that every member of the public enjoyed the same right to walk over Conservation Land, Mr. Glamuzina replied that they did not, however, have an easement to their own property. He demanded that the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trustees meet him that afternoon at Uretiti and once again threatened legal action. He said he had been thanked for widening the Tahuna Trail by a local woman who regularly walked there with her dog. “Now she doesn’t get her face scratched by the gorse.”

www.russellturner.co.nzThis is a busy week for those of us interested in local government politics. On Wednesday the Whangarei District Council held a “drop in session” with two formal presentations at 2pm
Northland at the Ruakaka Recreation Centre in Takutai Place.
Northland Regional Council will hold a meeting at the same venue. An original submission to the local Government Commission from The Northland Regional Council formed the basis of the commissions draft plan for a single unitary authority for the whole region with ? councilors and seven local boards holding delegated powers. On the other hand the Whangarei District Council, is opposed to the unitary plan. The announcement of its Ruakaka drop - in and presentation appeared on its public notice page of the
disadvantage Whangarei District residents who will have to subsidise civic works in Kaipara and the Far North. The WDC will also be holding another “drop - in” style
Marae at 5pm on Monday 3 February and is planning a phone survey of a cross-section of Whangarei District residents which the public notice says is in order to gauge their views on this issue before it prepares its submission to the Local Government Commission. Regional council chairman Bill Shepherd said in the press release announcing a series of such meetings around the Whangarei District. “The meetings are to ensure members of the public have as much information as possible, to discuss the merits and disadvantages of the commission’s preferred model and to hear people’s views and suggested improvements.” He said, “Feedback gathered at the meetings will help
on the proposal, which is due to be provided to the commission by Friday 21 February.”

Children and staff of the Small Poppies childcare centre in Ruakaka got a nasty surprise when they arrived for work and play on the morning of Thursday 16 November. They found their playground had been used as the venue for a drunken party. “There were cigarette butts all over the children’s picnic table and vomit was all over the place” said the centre’s manager Pat Parkinson. “We had to clean it all up and disinfect everything before we could let the children go out to play. It is disgraceful that anyone could do something like this to a children’s play area.”The children had to stay inside all morning while the mess was cleaned up. A security light is kept on all night at the front of the building and Pat is wondering if anyone saw anything suspicious in the area. The Small Poppies Centre is at number 17 Marsden Point Rd., near the intersection with State Highway One. The intruders would have had to climb over the fence from Marsden Point Road to access the playground. If anyone can help with information please call the Small Poppies centre – 432 7396 or contact the Bream Bay Police.

warranty.Mr. Carvell said the pump station outside the Ruakaka Camp Ground performed without incident. This despite the camp ground’s 350 sites being fully booked for 10 days from 30 December. An extension at the Ruakaka wastewater treatment plant (to cope with the extra load from Ruakaka south) is also working well. Treated wastewater is now being applied as irrigation on to Council owned land at Rama Rd., in Marsden Point. The land is leased to a beef farmer who lets the land rest for a set number of days before grazing his cattle there.

The weather was perfect with sunshine and no wind for The Snake Bank Challenge
The main event, a paddle race open to any kind of non-motorized water craft and over 2400 metres out to Snake Bank and back, was won by the four–person double-
Gordon representing the Ruakaka Surf Lifesaving club. Karl Roberts, on a fast standup paddleboard, was second and Craig Cogan was third in a kayak. The 1500 metre swim was won by Russell Mortimer of Whangarei. The lack of wind didn’t work so well for the Marsden Yacht and Boat Club’s offer of free sailing lessons. The lazers remained on shore. Instead the club offered sea biscuit rides towed behind its safety boat. However, no sooner had the boat driven by Steve O’Brien MYBC Club Commodore with Hazel Harnell in tow, got out from the shore than the wind picked up and Hazel had a bumpy ride twice tipping out into the sea. Steve said Hazel and her friends had helped all morning with the cream teas and kids scavenger hunt and “we spent about an hour giving them some fun and bringing smiles to their faces.”

Five leaders and 16 scouts from the Solomon Islands
Scout den below Mangere Mountain. Meeting them on the 27th I suggested they would like to take a walk up the mountain, which is the remains of an old volcano for views over Auckland. They had seen the stock fence around the hill and thought it was private property so they wouldn't be allowed up it. In the Solomons there are no fences outside of the towns and where there are fences it is private property. Walking around and over the Volcano we saw a few rabbits, which was a new ex-perience for them as there are no rabbits on the Solo-mons. It was soon established that rabbits are faster then pursuing Solomon Island scouts.
and Samoa for the bus trip down to Feilding. Eddie Ani-si, the Honiara District Commissioner and Contingent Leader, asked me whereabouts in Auckland Feilding was? They had not seen a map of NZ before coming over. Barring two leaders who had been to Vanuatu and New Caledonia everyone else had never been outside of the Solomon Islands.

There are no Scout Halls in the Solomons, as most of the Scout Groups are school based and use the school hall. I had arranged mattresses to sleep on from the local Bream Bay Community Support Trust. Each day they would get up have breakfast and then sweep
the hall and swab out the toilets etc. Very tidy people!

which was a novelty for them, as there are no big expan-sive surf beaches in the Solomons. On the Wednesday we took them in to Whangarei where they shopped in the Warehouse, mainly for clothing and shoes and gifts for family back home, then it was down to McDonalds for lunch, which was another new experience for them. There are no shops the size of The Warehouse in the Solomons or any hamburger restaurants. They also en-

Family Research
Our local area Family Research Group (Waipu In-formal Genealogy Group) begins a new year on Monday 24th February at 11.00am in the Caledonian rooms off St Mary’s Road. If you have an interest
course, some of our members have been researching for many years and have the experience and knowl-edge to help newcomers. We can help you get start-ed, or – if you have come across that ‘brick wall’ – where to go from there. Family research is about communicating with others of like interests. Not all of the information you could be looking for is on the Internet, and a good deal of what is on there is smothered with errors.
Bring your lunch – we supply the tea or coffee. If
get some help with your own research, you will be most welcome.
