Tena Koutou, e hoa ma. Nga mihi nui kia koutou. Dear Parents, Caregivers and friends of the school. I have been blessed to work at our school for the last 14 years. In all of those 14 years I can honestly say that this last term and a bit has been one of the most challenging times to be involved in leading our school During the lockdown and then through the associated Covid levels I have been incredibly proud of the school teaching and support staff team. They have continued to go the extra mile to keep learning authentic and engaging while maintaining student hauora. I would also like to acknowledge the community for your support and understanding as we all came to grips with the changing world in which we live. Next term there are more events starting to be added back onto the school calendar. We are looking forward to hosting family members at our Class and School Masses throughout the term. Classes will combine for Masses on Tuesdays. The children will send home invites next term, the week before their mass. Extended family members will also be welcome to come. We will have two School Masses on Sundays in August and September at St Joseph’s Church during the term. The school sports programme is now almost back into full swing. Netball, hockey and basketball/miniball will get underway next term and our annual Year 5 & 6 interschool sports programme will be played next term. Thanks to all of the parents who have offered to manage and coach our sport teams. I would also like to acknowledge our co-ordinating teachers who give up their time to make sure we are able to enter children into their sport(s) of choice. This week each family will receive a special envelope from the Friends of St Joseph’s, FOSJ (our PTA). Please look carefully inside the envelope. There is a little contribution to the economy for each family. Please feel free to use the small token or pass it on to someone else who may wish to use it. This little contribution to our community and the local economy is what the FOSJ are all about - making a difference for our school and our community. This week we will be saying farewell to Wendy Clough who has been a key member of our part time teaching staff. Wendy has worked in Fatima while Mr Healion is on his Deputy Principal release and she has worked in all other classrooms across the school. Wendy brings joy to our staff and children and she will be missed. Her enthusiasm, kind nature and ‘give it a go’ attitude are admired by us all. Wendy has worked with our chess children and done a wonderful job with our keen players. The last two years that Wendy coached the children they qualified for the national championships. Wendy will continue to work with the chess children and we hope to see Wendy back in the school in the future. Mrs Sheryl Firth who has children at our school will join our team of release/relieving staff next term. Mrs Jenna Gawler will teach in Fatima when Mr Healion is on release. Well done to the large group of St Joseph’s students who received the sacrament of reconciliation last week. We are very proud of you all. Next term there will be the opportunity for children to prepare for the sacrament of First Communion. Our children and staff are in need of a well deserved break. We are looking forward to seeing you all next term, refreshed and ready to learn together. God bless, Mike Dowd

NEW MEMBERS: If you are interested in becoming a Friend of St Joseph’s you are most welcome to come along to the meetings or contact the school on 758 0364. Our major fundraiser this year was to be our Fun Fair but this has been postponed until 2021. We will look to provide a few ‘extras’ at the school picnic this year to make up for the postponed Fun Fair. Our next meeting will be 7.30pm, Tuesday 28th July. The famous FOSJ Disco will be held on Thursday 3rd September. We hope all of our families enjoyed receiving their surprise envelope yesterday.

Please use your voucher with your family or feel free to pay the voucher forward. God bless.

BOT REPORT The year so far has been extraordinary in many ways. As a school and as a community, COVID-19 has thrown us well and truly off the path we started out on in February. At a school level we’ve seen sports cancelled, school trips cancelled, professional development cancelled or delayed. Extending into our community we know that families have been impacted in different ways. There have been the challenges of schooling from home, parish masses cancelled, protecting the health of family members, along with the impact of the lockdown on jobs and financial security. For many, the silver lining through all of that was the opportunity to spend more time as a family and enjoy a slower pace of life.

We held a BOT meeting on Zoom during the lockdown, and the discussion was primarily around updating the board on how day-to-day school life worked during that period. It was evident from this meeting that there were many, many extra hours and extraordinary levels of energy going into supporting learning at home, and putting measures in place to keep our children safe when they were able to return to school. We would like to acknowledge and congratulate the whole St Joseph’s team for their outstanding work in responding to the ever-changing environment that we experienced as we headed into and back out of the different alert levels. In particular the very capable and committed leadership of Mike Dowd, Michael Healion and Fiona Hopkirk. The focus for this term, rightly, has been on wellbeing and hauora. As a school the priority has been to support the St Joseph’s team, children and families adjust to what life looks like for them now. We are looking forward to getting back on track next term with some of the activities and development opportunities that had to be postponed from earlier in the year.

At our BOT meeting last Thursday, one of our elected Parent Representatives, Louisa Webber, tendered her resignation as a trustee. Louisa has made a valuable contribution to the Board and we thank Louisa for her time and input over the last 12 months. This leaves us with a casual vacancy to fill, and we will be in contact with the community next term with further information. We hope you all have an enjoyable and relaxing school holiday break. Stay safe and take care. Leisa Kelsen Chairperson

REVISED GUIDELINES FOR TESTING FOR COVID-19

At a time where there are increasing numbers of colds and other winter illnesses, the Ministry of Health

has revised its guidance on who might need testing for COVID-19. Symptoms of COVID-19 can include

new onset or worsening of one or more of the following:

If anyone has symptoms but is unsure if they have been exposed to COVID-19, they should ring

Healthline on 0800 358 5453 or their GP for advice. Over winter there are many other viruses about that

can cause people to feel unwell.

Some people with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 may be tested as part of Health’s ongoing

surveillance to ensure that there is no community transmission in New Zealand. If they are not close

contacts of confirmed cases, have not recently travelled overseas, or have not been in contact with recent

travellers, then there is no need for them to self-isolate while awaiting the test result, and they can return

to school or early learning once they are feeling well or on the advice of their health practitioner.
