Twenty–Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today we will hear that strange Gospel story about the two sons — one who says “Yes” to his father’s request, but then fails to do as he promised; the other who initially says “No,” but then reconsiders and does as his father asked. Our actions are more important than our words. Let us remember that our Lord is one whose words and actions are always faithful and who calls us to be like him. Paige Shortal

Effective July 2, 2020, the ceme-tery will be resuming cremation burials. We ask that the amount of

SUPPORT YOUR PARISH At a time like this it can be uncomfortable to talk about giving. Our primary concern is the health and well-being of our parish-ioners. However,

these difficult circumstances show just how important the of-fertory is to the life of our par-ish. The reality is that our parish relies on the sacrificial giving of our parishioners to operate – par-ish salaries, programs and ongo-ing operating costs (heating, wa-ter, electricity, etc.) are funded through the generosity of our pa-rishioners. It will be a challenge for our parish to maintain opera-tions without the weekly offerto-ry collection. There are several ways that parishioners can con-tinue to support the parish at this time. Mail your regular weekly offertory contribution to the par-ish office or contribute through pre-authorized giving. PAG forms are available on our parish website. If you have any questions please contact the par-ish office. Thank you for your continued support.

THANK YOU We cannot thank our vol-unteers enough during this difficult time of Pan-demic. Returning to Mass has been not only stress-ful for those attending but also exhausting for our volunteers who have put in so much of their time and personal sacrifice. We could not do this without you and we pray that this unprecedented time will not go too far into the fu-ture. Your commitment and willingness to take personal risks is a sign of your generosity to re-spond to God’s call to serve your neighbour and be your brother/sister’s keeper. Thank you.

OFFERTORY COUNTERS NEEDED We are in need of more offertory counters. The commitment is for 4 to 5 hours each week on Mon-days. We are hoping to get enough volunteers so that your commitment is to take a turn to count on one Monday morning per month. Those interested please contact the parish office. Volunteer Screen-ing will be expected.

YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER? Please consider to volun-teer with the sanitizing or screening. for weekend and weekday masses, (must be 18+). Contact the parish office.

It is important that you arrive 30 minutes or more before mass begins so our volunteers have time to welcome, screen and di-rect you to your seat. Entrance doors will be locked when mass starts and you will have to regis-ter for another mass if you ar-rive late.

Anyone with mobility issues will be moved to the front of the line so they can be seated in pews designated for them.

Seating is not optional and will be assigned in sequence to en-sure safe distancing. Parishion-

ers are asked to remain in the seat assigned to them during the mass to respect the safety of others.

Be our protection against the wickedness and snares

of the devil. May God re-buke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of

glorious in grace and power, and for the love of the Mother of Jesus, the Queen of the Angels, be pleased to hear our prayer. You know the val-ue of our souls in the eyes of God.

THANKYOU FROM SHARELIFE Last Tuesday, Cardinal Thomas Collins celebrated Mass in grati-tude for someone very special to us: you. Thanks to you, ShareLife-funded agencies having supported thousands of people during this pandemic. If not for you , where would the poor and marginalized people in our communities turn for the compassionate care they need? During this Mass, we thanked God for your generous support and prayed for your intentions. In his homily, the Cardinal reflected on how Our Lady models our response to the global crisis: If you have not yet contributed to your parish's ShareLife campaign, we invite you to make your gift securely online. If you have already given, know that we, and Cardinal Collins are deeply thankful. "We pray in a special way in thanksgiving for all of the blessings which God has given to us through ShareLife, through the benefactors who make it possible, through all of those who are engaged in its work and the work of the various agen-

cies. As Mary stood at the foot of the Cross, they stand shoulder to shoulder with those who are most in need. And in that, they show what discipleship truly means."

WORLD DAY OF REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS SEPTEMBER 27

We are fortunate to live in a coun-try where people can practice their faith without fear of persecution. It is not like this in every country. In some places, peo-ple are threat-

ened with physical harm on the ba-sis of their religious beliefs. In 2009, Cardinal Collins established the Office for Refugees to welcome families to Canada who are fleeing difficult situations in their home-land. . Through ShareLife, we are supporting the work of the Office for Refugees. In 2019, 528 people were welcomed to Canada and 532 resettlement cases were initiated. Thank you!

LETTER FROM THE CARDINAL

Dear brothers and sisters,

Every year ShareLife gives us the opportunity to reach out with the hands of Christ to care for those who are most in need. This is what we're called to do as His disci-ples: to be with those at the side of the road who are suf-fering, just as the Good Sa-maritan did. This is what it means to be a Christian. At this time especially, in the midst of this pandemic, so many people are suffering greatly. There are people who are in great need of help for them as they struggle mental-ly and psychologically. Share-Life helps in that. For people lonely, isolated, for seniors who need help, ShareLife reaches out to them. There is a great deal of domestic vio-lence and the ShareLife agen-cies are there at this time of great need to bring the loving hand of Christ into the midst of situations of such suffering. In ShareLife we find the pres-ence of Christ in the midst of those who suffer. We are there with them because He is with us, sending us out to be with those who are in need. That's the purpose of Share-Life. Especially in this time of such great need in the midst of this pandemic, I ask you to, in a very particular way, be generous in supporting those in need during the ShareLife Sunday collection. May God bless you as you serve Our Lord by serving those who are in need.

Cardinal Thomas Collins Archbishop of Toronto

SHARELIFE SUNDAY IS BACK! Living the Gospel by welcoming newcomers to Canada. The Dia Desso family were forced to flee the Cote d’Ivoire due to the civil war. They sought safety in neighbouring Ghana,

where they met a team from the Office of Refugees of the Archdiocese of Toronto. ORAT, a ShareLife-funded agen-cy, facilitated the family’s private refugee sponsorship by Good Shepherd Parish in Thornhill. They are now thriv-ing! The father loves his work driving a forklift, the moth-er cares for their one-year-old son at home, and the daughters are succeeding at school. Thanks to your sup-port, the Dia Desso family is proud to be living in Cana-da. St. John’s goal this year is $106,000. which our parish takes on with courage. Our latest report indicates we are at 82% of our goal with a total of $86.448.40 collected.
