Tuesday September 16th will be the first day of the 2014 autumn session of 1k club.

Every LTIS student is a member of the 1k club. The 1k club operates every noon hour, until

the end of the school year. Students, staff, parents and community members are encouraged

to run or walk the 1k trail during their noon hour recess. Every kilometer a student, staff

member, parent or community member completes will be recorded.

Recognition

For each 5 kilometers completed a green slip will be given. Upon completing their first 5 kms, the participants name will be read over the

announcements and their name will be added to a list in the hallway across from the art room (aka The Wall of Fame).

When a participant completes 10kms, 21kms (a half marathon), 30kms and 42kms (a full marathon), their picture and name will be posted on The Wall of Fame.

Participants who complete 42 kilometers before the end of the school year, will receive a marathon medal at a special medal ceremony.

Rules

Once pylons are placed across the trail head, the trails are closed and students may no longer enter the trails.

Students must stay on the trail, no venturing into the trees or on bush trails. Students must stay in front of the trail sweepers. Sweepers are students wearing

fluorescent vests who make sure everyone has safely completed the 1k. Students must check in with the 1k team at the picnic table after each kilometer

they complete.

Participating in the 1k club is a great way to demonstrate LTIS school spirit!

LTIS, let’s get out and get active!!

If you have any questions regarding the 1k club please contact Mme Jones at LTIS.

Get Walking! Stay Safe!

A new school year brings opportunity for families to give up driving and begin walking to school. Walking has so many benefits—it promotes physical activity, prepares brains for learning, and increases children’s familiarity with their community and neighbours. Walking with your child and negotiating neighbourhood streets with them provides an opportunity to develop traffic safety awareness and to practice safe pedestrian behaviours. Even better, it’s a great way to have quality time with your child before they start their day. Even if you live far from your school you can still give your child the walking experience by parking five to ten minutes away from the school.

Did you know 26 judgment skills are required to cross a street safely and that many of these skills have not fully developed in a young child? For example, they may think that a car can stop instantly or if they can see a car the driver can see them. They are often distracted and may underestimate dangerous situations. Most children need supervision to walk to school until they are at

least 9 years old.

Important pedestrian safety tips to model for your child are:

Cross at marked intersections or crosswalks.

Look left, look right and look left again before stepping out onto the

street.

Wait until the road is clear.

Always walk on the sidewalk.

Alberta encourages active and safe routes to school. For more information on how you can start a program in your neighbourhood contact [email protected] or call Toll Free:1-877-533-4098. Concussion Prevention

Sport-related injury is the leading cause of emergency department visits in Alberta among teens aged 15-19 years

1. Concussion is a common sport related injury that often occurs

during hockey, football, skiing and snowboarding. A concussion is a brain injury that occurs when the brain suddenly shifts inside the skull and knocks against the skull's surface. It may be caused by a direct or indirect hit to the head or body.

After suffering a concussion, a person may experience many different symptoms. These may include, headache, ringing in the ears, nausea and/or vomiting, disorientation, emotional and personality changes, dizziness, poor balance and/or coordination, poor concentration, light sensitivity, irritability, fatigue and sleep complications. In order to reduce the risk of a concussion, encourage your teen to take the smart risk approach and look first when engaging in a risky activity, such as hockey. Preparation, good sportsmanship and fair play all help to reduce the risk of injury, including concussion.

Teens should also wear the gear, such as a helmet that fits correctly and is secured on the head throughout the sport. Always replace your teen’s helmet after impact or as instructed by the manufacturer. In high impact sports such as hockey, teens should wear a face and mouth

guard. To manage a concussion, encourage your teen to take the smart risk approach and seek help from a coach, teacher or parent immediately after an injury has occurred. Consult a physician immediately after being notified of an injury in order to determine if a concussion has occurred. Finally, ensure that your teen does not return to activity or play until it has been approved by their doctor.
