Respect Life

“Parents are the first evangelizers of children, a precious gift from the Creator (cf. Gaudium et spes, n.50), and begin by teaching them to say their first prayers. In this way a moral universe is built up, rooted in the will of God, where the child grows in the human and Christian values that give life its full meaning.”

not receive a statement last year or who are new to the parish. Please call the parish office Monday through Friday during regular business hours or you can email us at [email protected].

and wheat products. Directions for receiving the low-gluten hosts will be given at the time of the Communion Rite.

Next Generation and the Millennials. A fabulous leader in our parish has an exciting future ahead of him. Ryan Morris has been awarded a 2020 Schwarzman Scholarship, one of the world’s most prestigious graduate fel-lowships. Ryan will graduate in May of 2019 from Penn State Berks with a Bachelor of Science degree in business with a concentration in marketing and management, and a minor in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Ryan describes finding out that he received the scholarship as “surreal” and states that he never would have fathomed that he would one day be a Schwartzman Scholar studying in China. “I originally planned to be a race car driver and I even made it to the NASCAR level my senior year of high school where I com-peted in the Whelan All-American Series. I really wanted to continue climbing the NASCAR ranks and forget about the pos-sibility of college, but I realized there is more to life than winning races.”

One of 147 scholars to be selected from more than 2800 appli-cants from around the world in a rigorous application process, Ryan will begin his studies in August 2019. The Schwarzman Scholars were selected through a rigorous application process designed to evaluate academic ability as well as leadership potential and strength of character.

More than 400 semi-finalists were invited to interview in either Beijing, Bangkok, London, or New York and went before a pan-el of distinguished figures comprised of CEO’s, former heads of state, university presidents, non-profit executives, journalists, and other leaders from around the world.

Scholars will receive a fully funded scholarship to study at the new Schwartzman College at the prestigious Tsinghua Univer-sity in Beijing. Ryan will join the class of 2020 in pursuing a Master’s Degree in global affairs with a concentration in eco-nomics and business. The newly-announced class is made up of students from 38 countries and 119 universities.

Ryan serves as two-term president of the Penn State Berk’s Student Government Association and he is a Schreyer Scholar. Ryan lives in Honey Brook and received his religious formation with our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP). Ryan has volunteered and worked here at St. Peter for the past six years. We will miss his competence, generosity, and enthusi-asm as he moves on with his education in Beijing and we will continue to support him with our prayers.

Many “Thank You’s!” in the weeks to come. Among the many sentiments of sincere gratitude are those we extend to our Eu-charistic Ministers who visit and pray with our homebound and shut in friends.

The sick and their loved ones, love and appreciation for these minister-visitors. Without the visits from our Extraordinary Eu-charistic Ministers many would receive communion far less often. I join these families in expressing my gratitude for the generous time given so selflessly.

In just under a 72-hour period in early January I was privileged to visit and share the Sacrament of the Sick with nine persons either in their homes, hospice facilities, nursing care facilities, and two hospitals. Not all were living anywhere near our parish boundary. All the same, the call was received at the parish of-fice or via our emergency number and I was blessed to be able to respond. Don’t delay in asking the parish for the Sacrament of the Sick. Call as soon as hospice care, hospitalization, or serious illness occurs! Fr. Fitzpatrick

Music Ministry

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 2 & 3, 2019

First Reading Jeremiah 1: 4 - 5, 17 - 19 The word of the LORD came to me, saying: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.

But do you gird your loins; stand up and tell them all that I command you. Be not crushed on their account, as though I would leave you crushed before them; for it is I this day who have made you a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of brass, against the whole land: against Judah's kings and princes, against its priests and people. They will fight against you but not prevail over you, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.

Responsorial Psalm (for 7 a.m. Mass only)

R. I will sing of your salvation.

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 12: 31 - 13: 13

Brothers and sisters: Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in human and angelic tongues, but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pomp-ous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Gospel Luke 4: 21 - 30 Jesus began speaking in the synagogue, saying: "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?" He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.'" And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Si-don. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.

Good Works: We are St. Peter Parish volunteers who join many other local Christian church groups in performing home repairs. We reach out in love and

friendship to transform substandard houses into warmer, safer, and drier homes, and by doing so, turn despair into hope. The team welcomes new volunteers of all skill levels. For more information or to be a part of Good Works, call Jim at 610-496-1393 or email him at [email protected].

Community Gardens: Our garden has been put to rest for the winter, and we are looking forward to spring, when planting will begin again. If interested in helping with the gar-

dens, please contact Barbara at [email protected].

MEETING CHANGES: Prayer Shawl Ministry: We have begun gathering in the Saints Room closest to the new Kitchen. Our Monday after-noon gatherings remain every other week

from Noon to 2 p.m., but our evening meetings will move to the First Friday of the month, 7 to 9 p.m. Check the bulletin calendar for meeting times and rooms each week. Do you know someone who could use our prayers? Gift them with one of our handmade shawls or lap blankets! Each one is unique and made in prayer as a constant re-minder of God's love and our continued prayers. There is no charge, and we're happy to deliver them if you can't. If you'd like to help make items, be a gift-bearer, learn or relearn to knit or crochet, or donate supplies, feel free to join us when you can for fellowship, crafting, and prayer.
