APRIL 2016 ©2016 Alnavco MEMO FROM PETE PASCHALL Our model maker Wayne Smith has added three new ships to the growing line of Superior’s “Never-were” collection, ships that never made it off the drawing boards of the world’s navies to their operating fleets. We are also reissuing other ships in this series, some of which have not been available for as much as 10 years. Neptun and Mountford have also added to their fleets. Info on the above waits for you below. The Battle of the Java Sea series from Clydeside of 1:1200 model kits announced last issue have still not arrived. As mentioned before, Bill Gilpin is using the new CAD (Computer assisted design) process for the first time. He had a company all lined up to do the “printing”. Unfortunately, that company ran into some internal problems and thus could not do the do the work for Bill. The good news is that he has lined up two more so that the models should start being available hopefully in a month or so. What would the battleship of the future look like as seen from a 1940 perspective? You can find out by going to our Facebook page. There you will find a diagram of it published in Popular Mechanics in the above year. Pretty interesting stuff; Maybe we could get our model maker Wayne Smith to do a model of it! While we can’t have everything in stock at all times, your orders guide us in determining what will be produced. Many of our customers maintain “Wish lists” with us. This insures that you will get what you want as fast as possible. Some establish dollar limits so there are no unpleasant surprises in case a lot of your backorders come in at one time. As always, we appreciate your orders…and your patience! SUPERIOR MODELS 1:1200 Here are the new “Never-were” for this issue. A206 $19.50 SCHEME 2, U.S. CA “Super BALTIMORE” 15,750T, 716’L, 12-8”/55, 12-5” This design would have increased the BALTIMORE battery by one third while only being 2000 tons heavier. This would have been a well-balanced ship that had reached the hull limits of 120,000 SHP power plant to reach 33 knots. A411 $19.50 SCHEME 1 (5-511-19), U.S. CL “Super CLEVELAND” 1941 design 13,300T, 660’L, 12-6”/47 DP, 12-5”/38 34K This design placed CLEVELAND armament on a BALTIMORE hull and returned torpedoes to a cruiser armament. The aircraft arrangement was placed aft. F307 $19.50 ST. LOUIS, French CA 1940’s design 14,470T, 662’L, 9-8” (3x3), 10-3.9”, 3 AC The French began studying replacements for the three PRIMAGUET class in 1939-40. They wanted 3 cruisers that were superior to the HIPPER class in speed, armor and armament. This necessitated a 50% increase in size over the ALGERIE, the last heavy cruiser completed, and one of the best treaty cruisers built by any country. Several designs were suggested with some having superior AA fire at the expense of catapults and aircraft. This model is of the C5 A3 with somewhat reduced AA capability to add aircraft facilities. These ships would have introduced the twin 37mm ACAD mounting with separate directors. Replacement of DUGUAY TROUIN was approved on 1 April 1940, but construction was never ordered. Note: The above here models should be ready in in a month or so. Advance orders are being accepted for them now. Superior 1:1200 “Never-weres” reissues Available again are the following ships. All Superior “Never-Weres” are made available on a rotating basis. The following will not be re-issued for several more years. A208 $18.50 SCHEME 3, U.S. CA, 1940’s design 17,300T, 710’L 6-12”, 12-5”, This was a “compromise” cruiser carrying 12” guns but only protected against 8” shells. It was envisioned that the two of these would have had a reasonable chance against CB’s like SCHARNHORST. A313 $18.50 SCOUT CRUISER C-1, U.S. CA, 1920’s design 10,000T, 620’L 9-8”, 4-5”, 4-3”, 6-TT This design was the result of the desire to have 8” guns mounted on a 10,000T cruiser. It had a triple turret forward and two twins aft. It was a direct answer to HAWKINS. This planned design led to the design of the PENSACOLA class CA’s which favored speed and firepower over protection. G405 $18.50 KREUZER M, German CL, 1930’s design 7,800T, 600’L, 8-5.9”, 8-21TT This cruiser needed to be capable of long-range commerce raiding, have a high speed and a respectable armament and light protection. This translated into a requirement of constructing three per year for four years. Three were laid down but none were ever completed. D201 $29.50 Dutch 1047, Dutch CB 28,000T, 778’L, 9-11”, 12-4.7” This plan was similar to SCHARHORST and was designed to fight Japanese heavy cruisers in the Pacific. It called for German 11” guns, but the invasion of the Netherlands in 1940 put an end to plans to build this class. F106 $31.50 ALSACE, French BB 45,000T, 900’L, 12-15”, 12-6”, 16-3.9” In 1940 the French began design studies for a new BB class. They considered three designs using 9-16” (3x3). But this would have meant designing a new turret, so they settled on the 15” turret they had (3x4). WWII cancelled the building of this ship. F901 $24.50 NORMANDIE, French BB 1916 23,230T, 578’L 12-13.4” Because of the lack of large docks, the French looked for ways to increase the firepower of their BB’s yet maintain the same basic hull size. They decided on quadruple turrets which gave their broadside two extra guns. Four of this class were launched in 1915 but never completed.
