Please encourage your children to comply with this safety rule so they can enjoy all the benefits of learning and playing outside. Recently Amber-Jade Sanderson MLC visited Weld Square Primary School to present a cheque for $60 000 towards a nature playground. If you would like input into this project please come to the P & C meetings! A huge thank you to everyone involved in making our 2017 Faction Carnival such a success. Once again our P & C worked tirelessly to support the day with their cake stall and Subway lunch. The participation and enjoyment of students was clear to see as were numerous examples of sportsmanship, fair play and encouragement. Congratulations to overall winners Hovea and all our year level champions on their awards. On behalf of the school community, I wish our interschool athletics team every success as they represent us at West Morley Primary on Friday. We know they will give their best in events and hope they have a fun day. Congratulations to LA 4 for again winning the Principal’s Uniform Award. They won a certificate and an extra 10 minutes of play time which I will supervise. When checked last week, LA 4 had 95% of students in full uniform! Over the past six weeks the percentage of students in full school uniform has grown by 15%! Well done! Next term Mr Payne will begin a six month appointment to Lake Monger Primary School as Deputy Principal. We wish him well for this experience. Science will remain a specialist area at Weld Square and we will announce the new teacher once it has been confirmed. We have begun preparing for the 2018 school year! If you are aware that your family is moving from the area and leaving Weld Square Primary School please let us know as soon as possible to assist our planning. On Monday 18 September we have our annual Open Evening and Arts Festival. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to visit our school and also to see examples of your children’s learning. Having seen some of the EduDance rehearsals myself, I am confident you’ll love the performances too! I hope to see you there! We all have the right to feel safe at all times. This is true for all people, both children and adults. It is a right; safety does not need to be earned. With any right there is also responsibility. We have a responsibility to ensure the safety of others too. Bullying can make people feel unsafe and is a very serious issue. Unfortunately sometimes the word is used loosely which can diminish the power of the word. The following is a helpful reminder of the differences between being rude, mean and bullying. Rude – Unintentionally saying or doing something to hurt someone’s feelings. Mean – Purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone once (or maybe twice). Bullying – Intentionally aggressive or hurtful behaviour, repeated over time, that usually involves an imbalance of power. Weld Square Primary is committed to working with families to develop kind, considerate and inclusive young people. In my short time at the school, I have been impressed by the friendliness and manners of our students. Certainly there is a genuine feeling of community and this sense of belonging provides a great platform for learning. Thank you for your contribution to this! Dear parents/carers It was great to be a part of the school athletics carnival and this week the interschool athletics carnival is being held. I have enjoyed being a part of the training on Wednesday mornings by helping with breakfast. We have had some wonderful helpers from the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Noranda Church of Christ as well as staff from the school. Thank you all so much.

It was good to see great sportsmanship from the students as they encouraged and congratulated each other. Being able to manage not winning and the emotions that go with this is a really important part of children’s development and growth and the carnival is an opportunity to experience the highs and lows. It is important to help our children to develop resilience, and if there is more than one child in the family there are lots of opportunities to “lose”! I remember always losing to my children when playing board games (I didn’t need to work at losing with ball games, it came naturally!) but I don’t think I did them any favours.

It would have been more helpful to let my children lose sometimes, and help them to work through feeling their disappointment and anger, and get over it without hurting anyone else. For some children this is much harder than others. Two siblings in the same family—one might be devastated that their faction lost (again!) while the other was happy to go home with a few ribbons! The first sibling will need more help and encouragement than the second. As we teach our children at school, all emotions are OK, it is what you do with them that can be OK or not OK.

On Friday, GO WELD SQUARE! Blessings from the Chaplain Sandy Clifton

Hello Everybody We have almost wrapped up term 3 so the committee is starting to focus on term 4. We have a free dress day planned for Friday 13 October (week 1). A gold coin is required for participation. There is also a lapathon planned for week 2. The theme for this event is “When We Grow Up”. Also planned is a disco on Friday 1 December. Watch this space and Facebook for more information as these events get closer. I have heard that the sport carnival was a great success despite postponement due to inclement weather. Thank you to everyone who assisted with our cake stall and raffle. The family night (’Festival of the Arts’) is on Monday 18 September. This is a great chance to visit classrooms and view the great artwork the children have completed. The canteen will be open and I am definitely looking forward to seeing everyone’s dance performances. Our next lunch order day will be in week 4 of term 4. Wednesdays are always boosted with a yummy lunch provided by our lunch team. Thank you ladies. We will squeeze in one more meeting this term on Tuesday 19 September at 6.00pm. On the agenda will be some discussion about the parking situation at our school. If you have any input, please contact us at [email protected] or come along (kids are welcome).

Dance (through life). When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It is to enjoy each step along the way.
