Principal’s Message

Welcome back! The unusual start to Term 2 has provided its share of

interesting moments around the school. The term commenced with the

following occurring in the first week of term; ‘Staff Development Day on

Monday, ANZAC Day Tuesday and our Athletics Carnival Friday. We have now returned

to some form of normality, but the upcoming weeks have many activities, so I encourage

parents to look at the school calendar and watch for notes coming home.

As mentioned, our school conducted its annual Athletics carnival last Friday. After a frosty

morning, the participants enjoyed a glorious day. Once again, the high participation rates

of all students was impressive. The high-level support from parents was most welcome

and contributed to another successful carnival.

There are many photographs in this edition of Scoop that capture our students

participating across the many field and track events. Thank you to Mrs Arnall for the

superb organisation. Thanks to Mr Jamie Gould who prepared the track.

This year our school decided to participate in the ‘Festival of the Falling Leaf’, which was

held last Saturday in Tumut. Mrs Gorman and Mrs Waters co-ordinated the students and

float details, with many parents enthusiastic to dress in costume to add additional support

to our float. Pictures of our participation are in this edition. Our intention was to support our

region, but also to draw attention to Batlow Technology School. This objective was

achieved with feedback from community members, the supportive commentary over the

PA at the parade and the photographs in the paper with the article describing our school

float as one of the best. Thank you to all staff that assisted prior to the festival and their

participation on the day.

Next Tuesday the annual NAPLAN testing commences for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 only. A

letter went out this week explaining the organisation of the testing days. The testing period

will be conducted state-wide over 3 days, with Friday providing an opportunity for students

to catch up on any missed testing if required. The individual results provided through the

NAPLAN test will inform future educational delivery at Batlow Technology School.

Our school participated in ANZAC commemorations on two occasions. Firstly, a large

group of our students attended the town commemoration. The student body looked

impressive in their uniforms led by our School Leaders Hannah Collins and Taylor

Bowman. Taylor Bowman read a passage for the gathering and delivered it wonderfully.

Both leaders then layed a wreath on behalf of our school.

On Wednesday, Batlow Technology School held its own commemoration ceremony in the

“Sharni Williams Hall”. Both school leaders once again led the assembly, which was both

reflective and informative for the students. Thank you to Mr McDonell for co-ordinating.

I have been provided with attendance figures for Term 1 this year and I am delighted with

what they indicate. We had almost 50% of students gaining a 100% attendance with many

others just missing out by one or two days. I take this as an indicator that our students are

happy to attend our school setting and participate in the learning. Thank you to the

parental support that obviously assists these figures. Please note that although we boast

about such figures, it is important that you put your child’s wellbeing first. If their health is

in question, then we would encourage this to be addressed at home.

Have a great week!

Mr Hodges

Primary News REPORT TO PARENTS FROM MRS DODD Welcome back to Term 2 at Batlow Technology School. The Primary Department has started Term 2 at full speed and has a number of events on the agenda for the next few weeks. Before I inform you of these events I would like to explain our Primary structure for 2017. We have three main classes; K/1/2, 3/4 and 5/6. The K/1/2 class is working with our new Instructional Leader Ms Paula Cooper. Kindergarten students have Mrs Amanda Waters for literacy and numeracy, Mrs Waters works with Kindergarten for three periods every day. Students in Year 1 and Year 2 work with Mrs Rebecca Foster for the first three periods every day on literacy and numeracy. For the remainder of each day, two periods, Year 1/2 students return to Mrs Waters for subjects such as history, science, geography, PDHPE and sport. We have been very fortunate to be able to split the K/1/2 class as this allows our teachers to target the needs of all students in the important areas of literacy and numeracy. We have been able to staff this with funds provided by the government through the Gonski program. The class teacher for Year 3/4 is Mrs Dodd and 5/6 have Miss Claudia Fallon. Miss Fallon is supported by Mrs Elliott (SLSO). Ms Foster teaches K/1/2, 3/4 and 5/6, providing release time for all teachers. Ms Foster teaches Library and Creative Arts which involves visual arts, drama, dance and music. PRIMARY SPORT At the end of Term 1 Primary students were involved in the Annual Cross Country event and last week students competed in the Athletics Carnival. Students are eligible to be selected for Zone Cross Country and Athletics once they turn eight years of age. Our Zone, the Highlands PSSA; will be holding carnivals for Cross Country and Athletics within the next few weeks. Notes will be sent home for students involved in these events.

Athletics in Tumbarumba on Friday 19 May 2017

Cross Country in Gundagai on Thursday 25 May 2017 NAPLAN Students in Year 3 and 5 will participate in Naplan Testing next week. Language conventions and the writing test will be held on Tuesday 9 May 2017, the reading will be held on Wednesday 10 May and the numeracy test will take place on Thursday 11 May. Friday will be a catch up day for students who have missed one of the tests. LIFE EDUCATION PROGRAM Next week we welcome the Life Education Van with Healthy Harold and Mrs Paula Tooth. Notes were sent home earlier and students need to return the permission note with the cost of $5.00 as soon as possible. Batlow Technology School is subsidising the cost of the Life Education Van again this year. GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Year 6 will attend the conference with Miss Fallon and Mrs Elliott on Thursday 25 May 2017. Notes have been issued for this excursion.

JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL We have a very active JRC this year. It is led by our Primary Captains Ben Howell and Chelsea Lengronne, Riley Gould and Aiyana Ironside. Other class representatives are Trent Ashcroft-Hanson, Shari Thompson, William Lott, Jim Howell and Holly Casey-Patterson. These students received their badges at the last assembly in Term 1. The JRC have been involved in a number of activities in Term 1 such as St. Patricks Day, Easter Hat Parade and Primary Disco. The JRC meet every Friday at lunchtime. LUNCHTIME CHANGE Primary are trialling a new lunch eating time. They are now eating lunch in the classroom at 12.30 pm, which previously was fruit time. Teachers are now able to supervise what the students are eating as it was noticed that some students were not eating lunch at all and some throwing their lunch out. We are hoping that the change will improve learning in the afternoons. SPECIAL EXCURSION “MR STINK” Miss Foster has planned a special trip to the theatre for Primary students in Term 3. A note will come home before the end of this term. Another excursion coming up is a trip to Tumut to meet the explorer/adventurer, Justin Jones. More information will become available soon, the date for this excursion is Wednesday 24 May 2017. Mrs Vicki Dodd Assistant Principal Tumut Festival of the Falling Leaf
