Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you for choosing Phoenix High School, whereall learners are expected to aspire to achieve theirbest. I am proud to be Executive Headteacher andwill ensure that the school will do everythingpossible to enable your child to achieve.

Phoenix is a vibrant, multicultural school committed to enhancing the life chances of all the learners who

attend. The school caters for learners between the agesof 11 and 19. The talents and achievements of ourlearners are celebrated as we prepare them for success.Whether they choose a pathway to employment oracademic excellence we will work with you to supportyour child in securing a better future for themselves.

We are committed to providing the best learningopportunities for all our students and the widercommunity. We believe fundamentally that every

individual has the capacity to achieve and it is ourfunction to do all in our power to maximise theopportunities for success.

We believe that prior attainment is only a startingposition and not an indication of where students arelikely to finish. It is our job to take the students aboveand beyond their expectation of themselves. Studentsare taught in groups according to attainment levelsand all students are expected to strive for excellencein everything that they do. The atmosphere of ourschool is one of high expectations, fairness,transparency and mutual respect.

Phoenix High School offers a wide range of learningopportunities both inside the classroom and out. We believe that learning beyond the classroom hasthe capacity to enhance and engage learners in newand innovative ways.

The school believes that parents and carers have a crucial part to play with the school’s staff in creatinga climate of expectation that will encourage allstudents to achieve their very best.

Ofsted Report

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum which ischallenging as well as accessible to all. The offerenables our students to access a range of educationaland occupational opportunities. At Phoenix HighSchool we follow the National Curriculum.

Every learner will follow a core curriculum in English,Maths and Science.

Students are guided by highly trained teaching andsupport staff who are committed to maximisingopportunities for all. Students are set challengingtargets that are closely monitored by curriculum andpastoral staff. We expect all our learners to committo regular home learning as we believe that itenhances the work done in the classroom andfosters a necessary independence. Parents and carersare expected to support their child by ensuring all

home learning is completed to a high standardas part of the vital partnership between homeand school.

In 2013 we were granted the Investor in CareersAward in recognition of our outstanding CareersEducation and Guidance Programme. All ourlearners are informed, supported and guided byhighly qualified professional staff.

Our main goal is to ensure outstanding achievementfor all our learners by providing enjoyable classroomexperiences through creative and innovative teaching.

We believe that every learner will make outstandingprogress whilst at the school. Learners at PhoenixHigh School can and do achieve at the highest level.We recognise our students’ potential and setaccordingly high targets for attainment and progress

to ensure that every student can continue theireducation at the university or employment trainingprovider of their choice.

Phoenix High School is a Science Specialist School. We believe that Science can provide a world ofopportunity for our youngsters and we aim todevelop a sound scientific understanding whileenjoying the creativity and practicality of science.

We have a science pathway that builds from KeyStage 2 right through to our Sixth Form (wherescience subjects are consistently the most popular).

Our second specialism is in Applied Learning and all our learners are prepared for the world of workthrough bespoke curriculum opportunities and the opportunity to study on our innovative pre-apprenticeship programmes.

Your child will encounter various professionals whowill meet the diverse needs of every learner including:a full-time School Counsellor; a Form Tutor; and aHead of Year. We believe that every learner shouldhave at least one adult to nurture and support them.

We offer a range of interventions to learners basedupon the full range of learning needs. The offerincludes enrichment programmes as well as extratuition.

In addition, there are mentoring programmes for all learners which include: university undergraduateand post-graduate mentors; literacy and numeracyinterventions and catch-up programmes; and one-to-one tuition.

We continually upgrade our technology to ensure all learners have access to state of the art ICT andtechnology. It is important to us that our learnersexperience the ever-changing technological climateand are prepared to take their place in a constantlychanging world.

Support for Learning

Our learning resources areas offer students access to a wide range of multimedia and specialist equipment.

We believe that learning takes place inside and outside the classroomand so we have devised a rich extra-curricular offer that all learnershave access to. This includes a Youth Club and out of school hourslearning programme. Learners and the local community benefit froman impressive Farm and Learning Zone where fruit and vegetables are grown and chickens and rabbits reared.
