Important Information

SENIOR CLEARANCE All senior students (except those still involved in NCEA exams) are expected to return to school to ‘clear’ on Monday 2nd December. Students should bring all textbooks, library books, outstanding sports uniforms and report to their Head of School in the Hall at 9.15am. Most students should be finished by 11.00am. Students still involved in exams are expected to return items before the end of that week. PRIZE GIVING CEREMONIES 2013 On Wednesday 4th December, our Senior Prize-Giving ceremonies will take place at the Regent on Broadway. All Year 11,12 and 13 students are expected to be seated by 10.00am for the morning session. Most students will be dismissed by 11.30am. The evening session will commence at 7.30pm. Students receiving awards will be notified by mail several days before the event and should be seated by 7.15pm. The Regent on Broadway is also the venue for our morning and evening Junior Prize Givings on Wednesday 11th December. All Year 9 & 10 students will need to make their own way to the Regent on Broadway and be seated by 9.15am for the morning Prize Giving. Ashhurst bus students will be delivered directly to the Regent and back to Ashhurst at the end of the session. Students from North Street buses will need to walk into town. We expect most students to be dismissed by 11.00am. The evening prize-giving starts at 7.00pm. YEAR 11 MUFTI As of Monday 4th November, Year 11 students will be permitted to wear mufti to school and NCEA examinations, instead of school uniform. In return for this privilege, we ask that students donate a uniform item/s to the school. These items are greatly needed to ensure that we have a supply of second hand uniforms for families that struggle to outfit their child. All proceeds from second hand uniform sales will go towards supporting Freyberg families. Clean and presentable uniform items will be accepted at the Student Centre from the 4th of November in exchange for a ‘mufti slip’ that will also put the student in a draw to win café vouchers. The café vouchers will be distributed on Monday afternoon. Uniform items will be sold at heavily discounted prices through the Student Centre and money gathered through this will be put into our student support fund. ADVANCE WARNING - KEY DATES FOR 2014 Thursday 23rd January 2014 Senior Course Approval Year 12 & 13 To ensure a productive start to the year, it is vital for Year 12 & 13 students to check that their selected subjects are still viable. Original subject selections may need to be altered because of NCEA examination results. Some students may not have the nec-essary prerequisites to undertake the subjects of their choice. It is essential that students attend so any issues with course se-lection can be sorted out before classes begin. Failure to attend may mean a student not gaining entry into the subjects of their choice. Staff will be available on this day to advise students, so please make every effort to keep this date free. Year 13 Peer support will take place on Thursday 23rd January (1.00pm – 3.00pm) and on Friday 24th January (9.00am – 3.00pm) Wednesday 29th January Starting date for Year 10, 11, 12 only. Thursday 30th January Starting date for Year 9 & 13. No school for Year 10,11,12 Friday 31st January Year 9 at school only Monday 3rd February All Year Levels at school

2013 NCEA Examinations

NCEA examinations start on Friday 8th November and run through until Tuesday 3rd December 2013. It is important students are well organised and know when their examinations are and what equipment to bring on the day (e.g. a calculator for examinations that need it). Please refer to the timetable with this newsletter, or the timetable available on the NZQA website, to plan. In addition students should be well aware of the rules and procedures that govern external examinations. These can be accessed at the NZQA website at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/qualifications/ncea/ncea-exams-and-portfolios/external/external-exam-rules/ Students should be well into their programme of revision by this stage. Resources beyond those supplied by teachers can be accessed through the NZQA website and this includes copies of the standards, old examination papers and assessment sched-ules. Other valuable resources on the NZQA site are exemplars of student work. These exemplars show student scripts for each standard at Excellence, Merit and Achieved levels with examiners’ annotations throughout. The most central reference point for these is via the subjects page on the NZQA site at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/qualifications/ncea/subjects/ By clicking on the specific subject further links to the resources become available. We wish students all the best for their examinations.

This was an awesome event that happened on the last day of Term 3. A Wearable Arts Fashion Parade occurred in the Hall at lunch time, bringing a flurry of hats, masks and dresses. It featured the “Supreme Winner” of Evento Manawatu 2013: Ella Whale and the “Overall Winner” from the Orange section in the Regional Rangitikei Wearable Arts 2013: Sharon Cale. Along with them the winner of the hat and mask section: Braden Luke (Year 12 Painting) who wore an excellent mask. In the Year 10 dress section the winner was Taneisha Robinson who modelled and helped design the dress along with Elizabeth Franklyn. Overall it was a fantastic performance and good job to all those who took part. Taneisha Robinson, Elizabeth Franklyn & Jo van Nistelrooy

Bulls Wearable Arts Competition Successes

Sharon Cale, a Year 12 student received Highly Commended for her Bulls Away costume which was inspired by the animal and the quirky town of Bulls. This wearable arts costume is made out of brown paper bags, leather, plastic bags and the significant word ‘BULLS’. The bulls head in the front is a replica of a charging bull with big horns and a chunky abstract mane. The garment was made over several weeks with the concept and design ever changing. She also came first in the Orange Sporange section. Madam Orange was inspired by the bright vibrancy of the colour. This garment is constructed out of various materials such as orange table cloth, bubble wrap, foam rubber and paper mache. Towering spikes fill one side and flowery petals finish the costume off at the bottom.

Evento Wearable Arts Awards 2013

A couple of years ago I entered the Evento Wearable Art Competition and ended up getting nothing. So I decided to enter it again in the hope that I might actually win something, but I never thought that I would end up taking out the Supreme Award. The whole experience was thrilling, making the costume, seeing the finished product and seeing it on stage. My theme this year was museum, so I had to get my inspiration from a museum, in particular the Coach House Museum in Feilding. I was immediately inspired by the saw blades and what products are made when they chop wood. All these ideas of how I could make my piece of wearable art just started forming. This piece of art was created using hundreds of wood shavings, pieces of bark and other various materials like

leather and polystyrene. The competition was good this year and I look forward to entering this competition again next year! Ella Whale

Student Board of Trustees Representative 2014

The election for the new Board of Trustees Student Representative was held on Tuesday 24th September, with the successful candidate being Victoria Lind. Victoria started at Freyberg High School as a Year 9 student in 2010 and has been involved in the Kapiti House Leadership Team and Operation Christmas Child. We would also like to thank Hayley McKay who was the BOT Student Representative for 2013 and has done a wonderful job. All the best for your future, Hayley.

Library—Spine Poetry Competition

Junior Diploma 2014

From 2014 Freyberg High School will introduce a Junior Diploma programme for Year 9 and Year 10. Students will be able to achieve points towards their diploma both through achievement in class and by focusing on positive work habits. Students are expected to: Be Punctual to class Be Prepared with their equipment Meet deadlines for homework and assignments Engage in classroom learning Treat others and their property with respect Depending on total points over the year students will be awarded their Year 9 Certificate or Year 10 Junior Diploma and this may be with Distinction or High Distinction for those who perform well in both achievement and self-management. Progress reports towards the junior diploma will be reported each term.

During term III we invited students to participate in the Library “Spine Poetry” competition. Spine Poetry is poetry writ-ten by choosing and organising spine titles of books held in our school library. We had a fantastic response and lots of interest in the displayed poems. Thank you to Mr Bradshaw who was our judge. Congratulations to the following stu-dents who were placed. Senior 1st – Tyson Turnbull 2nd – Kassy McMeekin Tyson’s Poem Silence. Hush, hush. Ashes Falling. The People Burned. The holocaust. Junior 1st – Emma Keall 2nd – Abigail Barnes Emma’s poem Beyond the river Anywhere but here. Dark souls Breathe.

As sport in 2013 draws to a close, we want to thank all the students, teachers, coaches, managers, officials, parents and caregivers who have done so much to help with sports at Freyberg this year. Sport simply would not operate without all the terrific help from so many and we do appreciate you all. Central 6 Tournament 750 students descended on Palmerston North but, coaches, managers and supporters especially our senior students who volunteered their time to come along and umpire, referee, do scoring duty, run messages and generally be helpful wherever needed ensured the day ran smoothly. Our hockey boys didn’t have a loss, but with a couple of draws, didn’t quite win their competition. The junior boys’ rugby played some terrific rugby and lost in the final in the last minute – much to their disgust but that is sport. The girls’ and boys’ basketball also had a great day getting very close. Our football teams struggled with numbers, but managed to have a good time. The junior netball girls played their hearts out against much bigger and taller opposition. We were proud of them all and the effort they put into such a long day with each team having several (shortened) games in one day. First XV Our 1st XV were invited to attend a rugby tournament held by Dannevirke High School

during tournament week at the last minute and enjoyed a very full few days travelling there to take part. The boys played very well for some wins and felt that this tidied up the end of a very successful season. Rugby Sevens This year the Manawatu Rugby Union have organised a sevens tournament and our seniors have had fun on a Thursday evening playing a couple of games each evening. There will be an all day sevens tournament on the 2nd November for our junior boys which they are looking forward to. Netball Umpiring This year our netball umpiring squad that Saskia set up in 2012 has shown some great results with Ema Rauhihi, and Shavannah Kinniburgh qualifying for their center badges – well done girls! We now have a squad of 9 girls and they have grown in ability with the help of Saskia and Ken from Netball Manawatu. Each week these girls have umpired for Freyberg, Ross Intermediate,

Whakarongo School and PNINS which is a big commitment each week. Recent Achievements Junior A netball winning their grade U14 boys’ rugby team winning the final of their grade 52-0 with only one loss this season. Rachael Peck – U18 Manawatu Hockey representative and member of the Massey Division 1 hockey team. Treivaahn Morgan – U15 Manawatu Netball representative. Rawiri Bidois, Tobias Manuel-Wickham, Tamatea Marsh, Raymond Niko, Quentin Cunningham and Jordan Ronayne-

Robertson all U14 Manawatu rugby representatives. Connor Todd, Shay Gillanders and Zane Illingworth – Manawatu Hockey representatives in their age groups. Connor

also was awarded the Most Improved Player for his Massey club team. Robert Crawford – NZ Junior Men’s DMT champion. Tara Westwood – Artistic Skating – Qualified for Oceania competition in April 2014. Mikaela Boxall – Manawatu Football representative. Congratulations to Brittany Leppard, Rachael Peck, Charlotte Cook, Michael Sadlier, Jonah Hodren on achieving 100

caps playing for Freyberg 1st XI Hockey teams. Daniel Foster – 1st place Tawa Junior Open squash tournament Summer Sport Mostly juniors are involved due to examinations for seniors just around the corner. Students are involved in volleyball, touch, sevens rugby and cricket for this term. Be ready for summer sport to start promptly early in 2014 when we start all over again. We wish all Freyberg families a very happy Christmas and relaxing holiday and see you all back, fresh and ready to go with sports in 2014. Rosemary Barsanti & Saskia Beveridge

Jimmy Carter Quiz Team 2013

The 2013 Freyberg Jimmy Carter Quiz Team enjoyed participating again in this annual competition against teams from other schools in the region. Questions ranged from music to chemistry, with all sorts in between. Thanks to this year's team, Emily Younger, Michael Le Pine-Day, Josie Carson, Helen Loveridge and Cameron Schaw for entering into the spirit of the occasion with enthusiasm. Congratulations to all Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 Drama students who per-formed in their class productions recently. Thank you to all the staff involved too, for your encouragement, direction and perseverance! Students can be proud of the quality of work produced, and their results. We also appreciated the supportive audiences who came along to watch. Recent performances include the Year 10 Shakespeare plays, which showed that the Bard’s work is well and truly alive and relevant to our Drama students; the Year 11 duologues, which showcased an array of talent in the two classes and saw a range of roles played, from hobos to runaways to elderly ladies; the Year 12 classic comedies showed how careful comic timing and interpretation can lead to delightfully funny moments; and the outstanding Year 13 class production of The Boys at the Beach by Alison Quigan and Ross Gumbley which was very funny and saw outstanding perfor-mances from the ensemble. Congratulations to Josh Parsons for passing his ASB Speech and Drama Teaching Diploma with Distinction. Josh has also received an award nomination for Excellence in language and expression. Lunatics Win National ‘Dance NZmade’ Competition

After winning their category in Pacifica Fusion earlier in the year, The Lunatics dance crew won the Overall Champion at the national Dance NZmade competition this weekend. They also won the ‘Open Champion’ for a brace of trophies. The secret to their success was simply hard work. The group spent hundreds of dollars on their costumes, hundreds of dollars on hiring practice venues and many hours dancing late into the night. Even after winning their regional competition, the group continued its long practices. The Asian-Māori-Pacifica crew was made up of Ihaia Kunaiti, Tama Nepia, Jahstice Tautolo, Rebekah Tufuga, and Channmorney Sum. For founding group member Ihaia, the highlight was the unity within the group – from

the 20 minute quiet prayer session together before the event, to the unity and synchronisation of their finishing moves. Their awards were also given for the originality and skill of their hip-hop choreography.

Students play Santa

As part of the Operation Christmas Child Project, Freyberg Whānau classes put together more than 60 shoe boxes full of Christmas presents for impoverished children this week. Each box had to be checked for items that don’t travel well before sending to the needy in south-east Asia, and the pacific. A shouted pizza lunch was offered for the best whānau class, with Mr Jorgensen and Ms Mudd’s classes making the final few for their all-round efforts. Year 12 student Victoria Lind ran the event, and was delighted with the creativity and generosity of the boxes. Victoria also wanted to thank everyone who shared a bit of Christmas giving with those who normally couldn’t afford it.

Loud Shirt Day 2013

On Friday 20th September 2013 our staff got in between a great cause and supported “Loud Shirt Day”. Loud Shirt Day helps hearing impaired children all over New Zealand to learn to listen and to speak. Not only did we raise money for the cause but we had great fun as well.

Manawatu House won the 2013 Junior Splash Carnival, placing one hand on the annual Inter-House Trophy. Their strong swim team were creative in raft making, determined in the Tyre Pull relay, and steady in the under-water Egg and Spoon race. The enjoyable event was organised by a senior Rec-Studies class, and also included retrieving items from the bottom of the pool, and best dressed competitions. Not surprisingly the water based event was won by the house aptly named after the local river – Manawatu.

Don’t Assume your Immune

It’s important that students who are leaving school in a few weeks have received their free immunisations so they’re protected from diseases in the next stage of their lives. During Term 4 we would like to remind all 16 and 17-year-olds to check they are up to date with their immunisations. Most immunisations are free until they turn 19. Immunisation is the best protection against many serious but preventable diseases. Immunisation helps protect you, your family, your friends and your community. It’s best to be immunised on time, every time, but it’s never too late to start if you’ve missed any immunisations. Immunisation is free until you turn 19. It’s not too late for girls to be protected against cervical cancer with HPV immunisation if you missed out in

Year 8. If you’re leaving school, now is a good time to check you’re up to date with your immunisations, before you

start work, study or travel. Don’t assume you’re immune! Speak to your school nurse or family doctor to make sure you’re protected. Visit getimmunised.org.nz for more information.
