Body and Mind

• Body and mind work together opposed to the mind and body being separate.

• Students learn and make sense of information through cognitive skills.

• Cognitive: the process of obtaining knowledge through thought, experience, and the senses.

As the body moves, it is exploring space, expanding, and stretching to all depths of its kinesphere, which constantly feeds information to the brain about the body’s surroundings

My Teaching Philosophy• I deem that having my own definition of what

I think the body is, is very important because that determines exactly how I am going to

teach movement.

Goals and Beliefs • Dance is important for public schools– Education wise and for under privilege students

• Teach creativity through dance• Encourage being an individual• I promote dance for everyone– Including “untrained dancers” and multi ability

dancers

Goals and Beliefs

• I seek to foster in students their capability to think in more than one way to further their dancing and improve

• I seek to increase their understanding of their own body and how it moves. – Better understanding of the body can decrease

injury, teach students to move efficiently, and provide better understanding of certain body concepts.

Classroom Management

• Students are not inferior to me

• We learn as a class through each other

• Discipline should be used in a constructive manner

• Students retain more information when they are having fun

Teaching styles

• Cued Response: Does not allow for the student to solve problems, think for their selves, use choreographic skills, or anything that involves being an effective dancer or teacher one day

• Practice: Show the phrase, then allow students to take the time to investigate and explore the movements on their own.– This allows the teacher to walk around and give one

on one time to students that may have questions

Teaching Styles Cont.• Inclusion: Offers different

levels of movement to include multi-ability, injured, and students that can’t do specific movements.

• Guided Discovery: Allows me to ask student’s questions so that they can understand the material better.
