QUESTIONS WHILE TRAVELING THROUGHOUT NYC

Where do I need to go?

Where can I go from here?

If I can’t get there from here, how do I get there?

How long will it take?

When will the bus come?

What is the traffic like in midtown?

Delays?

Will I encounter suspended / altered service?

Can I transfer to a subway?

What if I get lost?

I don’t speak English.

Does the bus stop at 28th Street?

I’m in a wheelchair.

Is the bus full?

Am I going out of my way to get to my destination?

URBAN TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION SYSTEM

The idea is to create an interactive reference kiosk that will function in urban spaces in order to provide assistance with transportation. I plan on creating the interface as well as creating a model where the kiosk would exist.

I am going to focus on one area in New York City where this kiosk could exist - right now I am thinking the intersection of 23rd Street with 5th Avenue and Broadway.

THE KIOSK WOULD ASSIST WITH THE FOLLOWING:

Cab Share - This feature would allow the user to virtually hail a cab and even split the fare with someone heading in the same directions

Train Times - The interface would be able to let the user know when trains are arriving and departing the station.

Bus Routes - This would show a map of all of the buses and where they are going. The user would be able to see how long until the next bus and where exactly they are located.

Plain / Train Information - This feature would allow the user to check flight times as well as MetroNorth, LIRR and NJ Transit times.

KIOSK

The idea is to create a simple interface that would allow anybody to access the information they need as quickly as possible.

The back side of the kiosk would actually contain a static printed map so people could still reference it if the power went out or if the interface stopped working.

The kiosk would be situated on a platform that represents a compass. Arrows on the compass would light up in order to direct the user in the right direction.

There is also going to be lots of signage in the area guiding people to the kiosk.

TYPE EXPERIMENTS

I have been conducting type experiments to see which typeface is best for the interface itself as well as the static signage on the outside of the kiosk and in the immediate area.
