FOREWORD
The Major Fruit Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on production
of banana, calamansi, mango, and pineapple. These crops are
highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture that the
Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) releases quarterly.
This 1s t quarter 2016 issue of the Bulletin presents the preliminary
estimates of production for January-March 2016. The source of data is
the quarterly Crops Production Survey (CrPS) of the PSA.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Production refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested
for a particular crop during the reference period. For other crops, area planted refers to the actual physical area planted while area
harvested refers to the actual area from which harvests are realized. Bearing trees/hills is the number of trees/hills where harvesting has been made in the past but may or may not have borne fruits or
productive during the reference period due to cyclical production pattern of the crop.
Estimates of production, area planted/harvested and number of bearing trees/hills are generated from the Quarterly Crops
Production Survey (CrPS) of which there are four survey rounds in a year, that is, February, May, August, and November.

Banana
In January-March 2016, production of banana was estimated at 2,048.76 thousand mt, 4.1 percent lower than the 2,136.40 thousand mt level in 2015.
The decline in production was traced to the following: o smaller bunches were harvested due to effect of dry spell in Davao Region
and drought in SOCCSKSARGEN (provinces of North Cotabato, Sarangani, and South Cotabato);
o lesser number of bearing hills harvested due to damages brought by
Typhoon “Lando” in Cagayan Valley in October 2015; and o decrease in area and number of bearing hills due to adverse effects
of Typhoon “Nona” in Oriental Mindoro in December 2015.
Higher production were reported in some areas due to the following:
o increase in number of bearing hills harvested for Cavendish banana from corporate farms in Bukidnon and Sultan Kudarat; and
o recovery of bearing hills from the effects of Typhoon “Glenda” in
CALABARZON.
Davao Region topped all the banana producing regions with 767.96 thousand mt
and shared 38.5 percent during the quarter. Northern Mindanao ranked second with 23.2 percent and SOCCSKSARGEN with 12.4 percent (Figure 2).
Cavendish variety accounted for 54.3 percent of the country’s total banana production. Saba and lakatan varieties were next with 26.3 percent and 9.2 percent shares, respectively (Figure 3).

Calamansi
Production of calamansi this quarter declined by 7.5 percent, from 16.95 thousand mt in 2015 to 15.69 thousand mt this year. These could be attributed to the following reasons:
o lower yield due to the effect of Typhoon “Kabayan” and “Lando” during the
flowering stage in Aurora; o decrease in area and number of bearing trees due to the adverse effects
of Typhoon “Nona” in Oriental Mindoro;
o intermittent rains and intense heat resulted to wilting of flowers and falling of young fruits in Quezon; and
o smaller fruits harvested due to the effect of drought in North Cotabato.
In Leyte, production increased due to additional number of bearing trees aside
from the application of organic fertilizer.
CALABARZON registered the highest production at 2.76 thousand mt
contributing 17.6 percent to the national output. It was followed by MIMAROPA with 16.5 percent share and Central Luzon with 14.3 percent (Figure 5).

Mango
For the first quarter of 2016, production of mango went down by 21.4 percent, from 148.85 thousand mt last year to 116.98 thousand mt this year. Among the factors that caused the decline were the following:
o decrease in number of bearing trees in Pangasinan due to Typhoon “Lando”;
o occurrence of rains during the flowering stage resulted to lower yield in Zambales;
o lesser application of flower inducers in South Cotabato, La Union, Iloilo, Cebu,
and Negros Oriental. o smaller fruits harvested due to the effect of dry spell in Zamboanga del Sur,
Zamboanga del Norte, and Davao del Sur.
Ilocos Region recorded the highest production at 62.20 thousand mt and shared
53.2 percent to total mango production this quarter. This was followed by Central Luzon with 20.6 percent and Western Visayas with 5.9 percent (Figure 7).
Carabao mango comprised 80.8 percent of the total mango production during the reference period (Figure 8).

Pineapple
Production of pineapple in January-March 2016 reached 591.25 thousand mt. This was 1.4 percent more than the 2015 level of 583.14 thousand mt. The increment was brought about by the following:
o expansion of corporate farms in Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental;
o increase in harvest areas in Leyte and Laguna; and o bigger sizes of fruits in Camarines Norte due to favorable weather condition.
In South Cotabato, production decreased due to lower yield caused by drought.
Northern Mindanao produced 328.54 thousand mt and respresented 55.6 percent to the national output. SOCCSKSARGEN came next by about 35.0 percent share (Figure 10).
