In addition to his radiobusiness, Ben Glass carried a stock ofrecords wLnch he often played to histhree children, notably the l:nes wluchhe found sold less well, From these,the future composer rapidiy becamefamrhar with Beethoven quartets,Schubert sonatas and Shostakovichsymphorues. Not until he was in hislate teens did Philip begnn toencounter more conventionalclassics.

He started on the violin at the ageof 6 and took up the flute when hewas B. During his second year at highschool, he applied for admission tothe Universrty of Cllcago, wasaccepted and majored tlmathematics and philosophia duringhis spare time practising the pianoand composing, taking as models theworks of such composers as Ives andWebern,

At 19, he grraduated from Chncago,determined to become a composer,moved to NewYork, and attended theJuiniard School, By then he hadabandoned the l2-note techniques hehad been using n Chtcago,preferring the music of Americancomposem like Copiand ardSchuman,

By the time he was 23, Glass hadstudied with Vincent Persichetti,Darius Mrlhaud, and Wiliam

Bergsma. Having rejected serialism,he was drainrn to the work ofmavericks like Henry Cowell lves,Moondog, Harry Partch andVirgilThomson. He moved to Pans, wherehe studied for two years with NadraBoulanger,

While there, he was employed bya fiim maker to transcribe the musicof sitar player Ravi Sharkar intonotation readable to Europeanmusicians, L: the process, Glassdiscovered the techniques of Indianmusic and promptly renounced hispreuous output. After researchingmusic in North Africa India and theHimalayas, he began applying non-Western techniques to his oum work.

By 1974, he had composed a largrecolledion of pieces, some for use bythe theatre company Mabou Mines -of wtnch Glass was a co-founder - butmairrly for his ovrn performing group,the Philip Glass Ensemble. Thisperiod culmnated rr the 3-hourMusic in l2 Parts and, in I976, the4% -how Philip Glass/Robert Wilsonopera Fl:stern on the Beach, nowconsidered a landmark of twentiethcenhry music theatre.

Glass's output srrce Elnsfein hasranged from opera, film scores anddance to various unclassifiabletheatre pieces. In addition, he hasproduced large-scale work for chorusand orchestra, syrnphonies, hascollaborated with David Bowre andbased pieces on films byJeanCocteau,
