We have also ordered a new range of baseball caps with the Associations logo embodied onto the peak of the cap. The baseball caps along with our existing stocks of polo shirts, metal lapel badges, cloth badges and stickers will greatly assist in raising funds for the Association.
So look out for the bright yellow PHBAA marquee during 2013 and drop in and say hello.
Anyone wishing to volunteer to help staff the marquee will also be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
David Shaw
Account Payments The Association has introduced a tax invoice system for paying mem-bership renewals and other fees such as registration and transfer fees. Tax invoices for membership renewal fees will now be posted to members so please ensure that your contact details are up to date when renewing. Your tax invoice will now form your receipt for payment of all fees as your payment can be tracked via your bank account. Separate re-ceipts will no longer be issued. We will be offering members a Bpay payment facility which should be in place during October 2012. For the first time, members will be able to pay fees by credit card (Mastercard or Visa) or from your cheque & sav-ings account. Your next tax invoice will provide this payment option and details of our biller code and your unique customer reference number. Bpay will replace Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) which has been problematic due to reference details being omitted on some payment transfers. The traditional method of paying by cheque and post will still be available. Please note that membership and registrar fees (horse registrations, transfers, etc) have increased effec-tive from 1 July 2012. Please refer to the table on the right for further de-tails. As mentioned previously, tax in-voices will now be generated for fees such as horse registration and transfer fees. The Registrar will email or post your tax invoice follow-ing receipt of your instructions. If any members require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me on (07) 4666 2226 or [email protected]
Increase in Fees
It has been some ten years since our fees were increased and with the ever increasing costs being borne by the Association, we have reluctantly had to increase fees to cover costs of running the Associa-tion and promoting the Percheron horse in Australia.
Please see the table pictured below for the increased fees which are effective from 1 July 2012.
Promotion of the Percheron
Horse
The Association has recently pur-chased a show marquee which will greatly assist in promoting the Percheron horse at heavy horse field days such as Gatton and Jon-daryan.
The marquee measures 6 x 3 me-tres and has our logo printed on the roof and the Association’s name printed on the front valance. We are now considering the best way of displaying merchandise and breed information inside the marquee.
A new tri-fold brochure has also been designed and should be printed in time for Gatton 2013.

his year was a very exciting
year for the Percherons at
the Brisbane Exhibition we had a
number of fantastic volunteers to
help us with the both the ridden
and static displays as well as
manning the stand.
This year the theme for the static
display was medieval and we
were lucky enough to borrow
some of the pieces from the pri-
vate collection of Mr Damien
Fegan.
Michael and I also put up a few
framed prints and copes of illumi-
nations to illustrate why we had
chosen this theme and how it
applied to the Percheron. In his-
torical circles there is some de-
bate about the existence of the
European Great Horse this breed
was most certainly the forerunner
of the Percheron but the theme
certainly proved popular with the
public and I think greatly added
to the pageantry of the occasion..
For all the members who were
unable to see the display this year
I have included the brief informa-
tion piece that was included in
our display as well as some of the
illuminations and the later pre-
Raphaelite print used to show
Percheron type horses :)
Horses in the Middle Ages dif-
fered in size, build and breed from
the modern horse, and were, on
average, smaller. They were also
more central to society than their
modern counterparts, being

essential for war, agriculture, and
transport.
Horses in the Middle Ages were
rarely differentiated by breed, but
rather by use. This led them to be
described, for example, as
"chargers" (war horses),
"palfreys" (riding horses), cart
horses or packhorses.
France was renowned for produc-
ing good war horses, from the iron
grey chargers of Charlemagne and
the Merovingian kings to the dap-
pled mounts depicted on the
Bayeux tapestry. The heavy
boned, clean legged horses de-
picted in manuscripts painting
and tapestries live on the
Mythology of the Middle Ages.
We believe the origin of Percheron
breed to be in the early middle
ages and over the years this breed
has fulfilled many roles.
Each of the roles would have had
influence on the breeding which
can be understood by examining
the genesis of the breed through
existing documentation and art-
work: from warhorses in the Mid-
dle Ages, then bred larger and
heavier to be work horses.
Percherons were also prized as
postal horses due to their stamina
T

and speed, and were selected for
their predominately grey coat col-
our (for easy visibility at night).
They played a major role in early
Australian history and were used to
pull heavy artillery in the Great
War.
Today they are seen primarily as
workhorses and carriage horses,
though pure and part-bred horses
are valued in a variety of eques-
trian arts.
The Percheron continues to have a
place in society with the Queen-
sland police now patrolling on part-
bred Percheron horses . So once
again the Percheron is fulfilling the
role of a modern warhorse.
The Percheron is highly desirable
for its temperament, trainability,
versatility and strength.
In our display this year , we have
included a selection of medieval
pictures which depict horses with
Percheron type characteristics .
The ridden displays where incredi-
ble this year and I am absolutely in
awe of the talent and good will that
were evident in all the displays and
I am sure that the public greatly
appreciated and enjoyed the
Percheron showcase. As always our
ridden displays draw large crowds
in the expo. There is no doubt with
the skills of the equestrian team
and volunteered time of the Queen-
sland Mounted Police and the
Mcleans we were able to put on a
very professional showcase.
Being part of the horse breeds expo
involves being on site for the
10 days of the Brisbane exhibition
from about 7 am to 7 pm each day
and partaking in the 3 parades in
the main ring and 7 ridden dis-
plays (of approx 30 minutes) as
well as having a horse in the box .
While it is a privileged to be able
to show case our horses it would
not be possible without the sup-
port of our volunteers.
I would like to take this opportu-
nity to thank everyone who was
able to help this year.
We were very lucky to have the
help expertise and support of the

all came together to display the

Bring the whole family to see how our early settlers of Australia farmed their land in the early days. Watch
these beautiful gentle giants go through their paces so effortlessly. An educational weekend for the whole
family, lots to see, lots to do and all free once inside the gate.
Barellan Clydesdales and Heavy Horse Weekend offers you a fun filled, value packed weekend. Our aim is
to give our visitors an insight into the early pioneering days of country Australia. We do not have side
shows or jumping castles, fairground rides no dodgem cars as this would not fit our theme, but we offer
much more, and its all free. Hay rides and sulky rides. We offer a huge hands on petting ring with all
imaginable farm animals and more for the chil-
dren, cow milking, butter churning, and scone
making the hard way, on wood stoves. Damper
making, blacksmith, saddle maker, harness
maker, whip maker, rope maker, wool spin-
ning, blade shearing, bush poets, country band,
grand parade which includes vintage farm ma-
chinery and too much more to mention. Our
own local family including Bruce Colin and
Paul Bandy will be attempting to break their
2011 record of 20 Clydesdales in full harness
pulling a fully loaded wool wagon, a sight to
behold and one of the most photographed
events of the whole weekend. The team of Bul-
locks will make another trip this year from
Tomerong to give demonstrations of mallee
rolling and other interesting demos under their
very capable handler Ron McKinnon, Ron han-
dles these babies average 1200kg each easily
and are a pleasure to watch and photograph. Heavy horses with competitions such as log snigs, long reins
and pumpkin snatch with finals on the Sunday. Gate entry is only $10 per person per day with a family
pass $25 per day (2 adults and children under 16 years). Please phone or email the Secretary for a program

Sharon Clarke writes: We headed off to the
St Helliers Heavy Horse field days in what was probably the worst weather that the
coast had seen for a long time. In the pouring rain and with the wind gusting bending the
trees. We thought that we had possibly gone
mad as we continued down the Pacific Hwy heading off for the weekend to camp
and compete with three horses. But as soon as we left the coast and headed inland the
skies cleared to welcome us to the St Helliers Correctional facilities beautiful grounds. We
had a great weekend and did not leave a
class we entered without a ribbon or a prize. Unfortunately Percheron numbers were
few, Paris was Reserve Champion led on the first day and Athena 2nd in the yearling
class. Thomas and myself placed 2nd in our respective ridden classes. One of the highlights of the weekend
was winning the two wheeled vehicle class with our newly restored sulky and with Paris who has not long been broken in working a treat. 2nd in the Ag Implement class, 2nd Hay carting, 2nd for Tom in the junior
handler. We met some lovely folk and stayed on the extra night to enjoy a camp oven around the fire.
