PHASE SHIFT 2018

Phase Shift is the annual technical symposium of BMSCE. The motive behind

this symposium has primarily been to develop inquisition, a better scientific

temper and the desire to consume knowledge, and be able to apply both

knowledge and the relevant skills to produce masterpieces well beyond our

time. Phase Shift is a collaborative effort of different departments and student

fora/clubs of the institution. It aims at enhancing the level of technical

knowledge in the student community, and ultimately strives to bridge the gap

between technical corporate organizations and students at the institutional level.

It is essential to formulate new goals, new perspectives and new directions to

enhance learning, exploring new opportunities, and to develop skills in an ever

changing world. A symposium of this scale is organized entirely by a dedicated

student body under the able guidance of faculty. The fifth edition of Phase Shift

was held on the 15th and 16th of September, 2018. The theme for the

symposium this time was ‘Space Systems ’. Over the span of two days,

students witnessed a competitive and collaborative atmosphere of technical

competitions, hands-on training, and workshops based on trending technology,

talks by eminent professors and seminars by industry professionals/experts.

INAUGURATION CEREMONY PHASE SHIFT 2018

The grand opening of the Phase Shift 2018 was witnessed by a student crowd of 500-800

students along with the chief guest of the day being Padmashri Dr. S. K. Shivakumar

(Former Director, ISRO Satellite Centre & Trustee, BMSET) presided by Dr. B. S. Ragini

Narayan( Donor Trustee &Chairperson, BMSET). The inauguration has begun with an

invocation song by our BMS Ninaad Team, which followed by a welcome speech by Dr.

Ravishakar Deekshit ( Working Chiarman,Phase Shift) which involved the specification of

making all departments in synchronization to the theme. Lighting the lamp which defines the

success of the conducted event was done later by all the dignitaries on the stage and student

core committee.

A brief introduction about the history of Phase Shift was presented by Dr.H.N.Suma

(Mentor-Phase Shift 2018). This followed addressing of the gathering by the chief guest

Dr.S.K Shivakumar. Our honoured Principal, Dr. B.V Ravishankar has spoken about his

experiences along with concluding remarks which was addressed to the students.

With this inauguration all the events of Phase Shift took place, and the chief guest Dr. S.K

Shivakumar & Dr.B.S.Ragini Narayan had performed the inauguration to the Exhibition

Stalls.

A Seminar on Current Technologies was conducted by PwC for an hour in the indoor stadium

after the inauguration of Phase Shift.

EXHIBITION STALLS – PHASE SHIFT 2018

Following the inauguration ceremony, the Stalls area was inaugurated by the dignitaries.

Stalls area, set up in the BMSCE playground, comprised a total of 40 stalls, including stalls

set up by sponsors for Phase Shift 2018, as well as those set up by the various departments

and special laboratories of BMSCE. Our title sponsor, Alpha Design Technologies Ltd., had

a stall featuring models of many of their cutting edge technologies. Other principal stalls by

sponsors were of National Aerospace Laboratories, Hikal Ltd., Prayogeek, Maven

Consulting Services, AEC, Art Bandhu, Bosch, Siemens, The Chopras, Comtek, CADD

Mentors, Akshaya Patra, Mentee University and Allahabad Bank. Further, stalls were

set up by the Propel Labs, Center of Excellence, IEEE and the Department of

Placements and Training. Following this were fifteen stalls of all departments, showcasing

projects undertaken by the respective departments and the achievements and

accomplishments of these departments.

With so many products and projects to display, the stalls area saw an unconventionally large

footfall and remained a buzz throughout the symposium. The stalls area also accommodated

the Math Mela by BMSCE Pentagram, the Mathematics society of BMSCE. This area of

the stalls was live, with the Pentagram students organizing games, selling handmade products

and refreshments, along with Milkshake Theory.

On the second day of Phase Shift 2018, a panel of judges visited all the department

stalls and evaluated the same on various parameters to bestow the "Best Department

Stall" award to one of the exceptional stalls. There was a tremendous amount of

interaction and exchange between the industries, students, academic experts and

professionals over the two days of Phase Shift 2018, especially with all these stalls brought

together under one roof.

BMSCE indeed feels proud to have formed associations with industries and bring them

closer to academia and is immensely happy to see a wonderful response from all facets of the

industry.

DEPARTMENT REPORT

Department of Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering held eight events which includes3

workshops during Phase Shift 2018. The list of events were:

1. Code-a-thon 3.0

Code-A-thon 3.0 is a flagship event of the Computer Science Department which aims

at testing the logical and mathematical ability of the contestants. The contestants are

given complex problems that need to be solved using code. It was held on the 15th and

the platform used was Hacker rank. The event coordinators were Medhini Oak and

Kusuma Nerella. The faculty coordinators were Mrs.Nandhini Vineeth and

Mrs.Madhavi RP.

2. Reverse Coding

Reverse Coding was an event where the students were given executable files and they

had to reverse code such that their code could produce the particular output for the

given input. It was based on the theme Space Systems. The event coordinators were

Arya Sreevalsan and Anjali Nair. The faculty coordinators were Mrs.Sarita AN and

Mr. G R Prasad.

3. Spacecraft Design using Simulations

Spacecraft Designing Using Computer Simulation was conducted on 15th. It was

based on the theme Space Systems. The event had 36 registrations in total and

students were allowed to participate as individuals. The event coordinators were

Anirudh RV and Tarun Krishna. The faculty coordinators were Mr. Basvaraju Jakali

and Mr. Selvakumar S.

4. Space Chase

Space Chase 3.0 was a treasure type of event which was based on the theme Space

Systems. The event was conducted on 16thSeptember. The event had 14 team

registrations in total and students were allowed to participate as teams of two or three.

The event coordinators were Siddharth Pai and Adhyayan Pana. The faculty

coordinators were Mr. Pradeep Sadanand and Mr. Syed Akram.

5. The Rescue Mission -Hackathon

Rescue mission hackathon was an event conducted under the Computer Science and

Engineering Department of BMSCE in collaboration with BMSCE IEEE on the 16th.

It was an event which was based on the theme Space Systems. The event had 10

registrations in total some of whom were IEEE members and students were allowed to

participate as individuals or in teams of two or three or four. The event coordinators

were Eleanor Prasham shining and Nitesh Sri vats. The faculty coordinators were

Mrs. Asha G R, Kavitha Sooda and Dr. B. G. Prasad.

6. IoT and its applications in Space Systems

IoT and its application using Arduiono was a Workshop conducted on the theme

Space Systems. The event was conducted on 15th September, 2018. The Workshop

had 50 registrations in total and students were allowed to participate as individuals.

The first part of the post lunch session included the demo of industry grade sensors.

Later there was a Hands-on session where the resource team taught Arduino and

explained few experiments using Arduino and different sensors. The event

coordinators were Chethan M and Prateek Aryan. The faculty coordinators were Mrs.

Sheethal V, Mrs.Jyothi Nayak and Mrs.Shyamalan.

7. Machine Learning Workshop and its applications in Space Systems

Machine Learning and its applications in space systems was a workshop conducted on

the 16th, based on the theme Space Systems. The workshop had 85 registrations in

total and students were allowed to participate as individuals. The event coordinators

were Neha Reddy Vadde and Gargi B A. The faculty coordinators were Mrs. Latha

N.R, Mrs.Pallavi G.B and Mrs.K. Panimozhi.

8. Data Analytics and its applications in Space Systems

Data analytics (DA) is the process of examining data sets in order to draw

conclusions. About the information they contain, increasingly with the aid of

specialized systems and Software. Data analytics technologies and techniques are

widely used in commercial Industries to enable organizations to make more-informed

business decisions and by Scientists and researchers to verify or disprove scientific

models, theories and hypotheses. The event coordinators were Ashwin Uday Bhatkal

and Aditi Awasthi. The faculty coordinators were Mrs. Rajeshwari B S, Dr.

Kayarvizhy and Mr. Vikranth B M.

Department of Biotechnology

The department of Biotechnology organized four events and one workshop during Phase

Shift 2018. The list of events are:

1. Exodesigner – Biomimcry

The event was conducted on the 15th. Biomimetics or biomimicry is the imitation of

the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex

human problems. Theme of the event was the team should give solutions or

alternative to various features or obstacles faced by the space machines or astronauts

using features of present biological traits seen in nature, to develop a potential product

and advertise it. In preliminary round, the teams were asked to come up with solution

and in the final round the solution was made to present along with design. A total of 4

teams participated. The event coordinators were Disha Jawadekar and Veena Prasad.

2. Battle In Outer Space (Quiz)

Teams of 2 individuals had to go through 3 quizzing rounds: a preliminary round was

conducted to select the 7 best teams. These teams then participated in 2 subsequent

rounds. The contestants were asked questions from the field of astrobiology as well as

some general knowledge questions. The event was conducted on 16th and the event

coordinators were Meghana B and R.Iswarya.

3. Aliens Vs Humans

The team will have to face challenges answer it to get to next question. They will

have to face various restrictions which are similar to that of space conditions. There

were totally 4 rounds out of which three rounds are elimination round - Crossword

JAM, Analysis, Picture puzzle and The Final clue. The team to finish the final round

will be the winner. The number of participating teams was 9. The event was held on

the 16th and the event coordinators were Kiran Rajeev and Benak.

4. Astrowar – Debate

The event consisted of the individual participants moving through three rounds.

Contestants with best scores at the end of each round progressed to the next. The

topics covered a wide range of currently ethically debated topics in the field of space

medicine and Astrobiology. The judging criteria in all three rounds were based on

content, presentation, vocabulary, voice modulation and intonation, and relevance to

topic under discussion. The winners were declared based on the best score in each

criterion individually and the overall score. The event was held on the 15thand the

number of participants was 7. The event coordinators were Noorulain Fatima and

Padmini Gokhale.

5. Workshop on ALGAL BLOOM IMAGING USING NASA TOOLS

The workshop was conducted by Dr Palani Murugan and his junior Vivek from Indian

Space Research Organisation. The morning session was conducted by Dr Palani and

the evening session, by Mr. Vivek and Dr Palani together. The morning session

started with an introductory lecture session about the tools and imaging techniques.

The lecture was followed by a hands-on session in placement cell lab regard few

applications of imaging on the land and costal area of Chennai. The event was

conducted on the 15th and the number of participants was 36. The event coordinators

were Ankita M N and Namratha B G.

Department of Chemical Engineering

The department of Chemical Engineering organized five events and one workshop during

Phase Shift 2018. The list of events are:

1. Workshop On Simulation

A workshop on Simulation was conducted on the 15th and 16th. The UniSim software

was introduced to them allowing them to explore the software and solve a few

chemical related problems. Around 32 students took part in the workshop. On the first

day of the workshop, a very talented and skillful professional, Mr. Kantharaja K. G.

with copious experience in the oil and gas industry shared his knowledge regarding

the same and educated the students about the roles of a process engineer. The

workshop was then taken over by the faculty of the Chemical department.

2. Battle Of Brains (Debating event)

The event was conducted on the 16th and participants came together in teams of 2 to

test their debating skills and improve their speaking skills, logical reasoning, and

critical thinking and get a boost of confidence. They got an opportunity to present

their views and learn on most debated topics related to general science and space. The

event coordinators were Amrita Prabhu K and Ashwini Anand. The faculty

coordinator was Sreelakshmi didhi.

3. Astro-Triathlon

Astro-triathlon transported the attendees to a world of space-reactions, radiation,

isotopes and everything in between. Chemistry amalgamated with Astronomy and

took us all on a space Odyssey. The outcome of the event was that of trivially

answering complex questions, thinking better and running faster while hunting the

treasure and becoming a riddle master, all of which was centered on Astrochemistry.

The number of participating teams was 8.

4. Astro-Intellect

The event was conducted on the 15th of September, 2018, and was basically a fully-

fledged quiz game. Teams of two participants were allowed to take part. There were 3

rounds, the first round being a written quiz, the second round being a crossword

puzzle and the final round being a quiz based on presentation. 19 teams participated in

the event. The event was conducted to provide sufficient basic knowledge on space

systems, Astro chemistry, and Astro biology.

5. Andromeda’s Escape

The event Andromeda's Escape was held on the 16th. 24 teams participated in the

event. Mr.Vidyanand Shetty from HIKAL was invited as the Resource Person and

helped in the smooth running of the event. The 1st round was crossword, which was

elimination round. Ten teams qualified for the next round which was the obstacle

race.

6. Pack Up – Let’s head to Mars

This event was the flagship event of the Department of Chemical Engineering. The

event composed of 2 rounds, the first of which was to pick the items one thinks is

necessary to carry along with them on a trip to mars. The second round was based on

arranging the following events that have occurred in a chronological order. The event

coordinators were Shriya BR and Koduri Sree Harshita Valli.

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering organized three events and two

workshops during Phase Shift 2018. The list of events are:

1. Circuit Maze

This event presenting a rare fusion of circuit designing and debugging with crossword

puzzles, was conducted on the 15th. Industrial collaborations for this event include

Venjay Automation and Byju’s. Round 1was designed to test basic electrical and

electronics, analog and digital circuit knowledge. Round 2 involved solving technical

crosswords and in round 3, participants were expected to design and build the

circuit for the problem ‘Design the circuit to obtain the output of OR gate using

transistors’. A total of 27 teams participated in the event. The event coordinators were

Sreelakshmi V and Sneha VL. The faculty coordinator was Prof. Chaitanya L.

2. Domino-Tion

It was a technical thriller event based on Arduino with domino effect where in

participants learn and compete with others to win this event, and it was conducted on

the 16th. A total of 15 teams participated in the event. The Prime Sponsor for the

event was Arfan 4th Year EEE DEPARTMENT, MD& CEO of B-Automate Lab. The

event coordinators were Vijay A and Aditya Gowda Baragur. The first and second

place winners received 2 kits worth 2000/- and 1000/- respectively.

3. Make-A-Thon

It was a 36 hour event to DESIGN, DISCOVER and INNOVATE. This is the flagship

event of EEE .Students were be provided with a problem statement for which they

need to find a suitable solution and need to build a working prototype. The industry

collaboration was with Electrono Solutions. The problem statement given was

‘BUILDING A WIRELESS PORTABLE DIGITAL REMOTE LAB, USING

REMOTE ENGINEERING’. The top 2 teams got an opportunity to work as interns in

Electrono Solutions. The event coordinators were Koushik Bhat and Venissa Carol

Quadros. The faculty coordinator was Dr. V Champa.

4. Workshop On Remote Engineering

Remote engineering is a current trend in engineering and science, aiming to allow and

organize a shared use of equipment and resources, but also specialized software. The

participants had a hands on experience to build basic logic gates with an

interface of software. Use of arduino in basic applications as well as in day to

day life interface. Process of coding the arduino using the arduino software. A brief

knowledge on remote engineering and augmented reality and also their

applications in our daily life. The workshop was conducted on the 15th with

industry collaborators Electrono Solutions. The event coordinators were Jahini B and

Pooja P Gachinamani. The faculty coordinator was Prof. Nethravati S.

5. Introduction To Harvesting Solar Energy Workshop

This workshop was conducted on the 15th with industry collaborators Sun in Town.

Students at the end of this workshop had the basic knowledge of solar PV panels, the

material used for making solar panels, the angle at which the panels should be kept

and the amount of DC voltage a panel can generate per area of cross section, life of a

solar panel, and the merits and demerits of solar PV panels. A total of 31 students

attended the workshop. The event coordinators were Subha R Mulchandani and

Sushma M. The faculty coordinator was Dr. K Padmavathi.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering displayed the following projects in

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organized six events and

three workshops during Phase Shift 2018. The list of events are:

1. ESPACIO –The Battle of Bidding

The event was conducted on the 16th.You teams attended the event. The industry

collaboration was with Prayogeek. The event coordinators were Kalavara Nishanth

Rao and Naralasetti Geeth Mathur. The faculty coordinator was Mr. Surendra H.

Round1 had some interesting challenges. A series of some puzzles were given to the

participants. Using the point earned in this round the participants got to bid the

components in the next round.

Round 2: One space system was decided prior to the event. Auction was on the

electronic components required to build the different sub modules of that space

system. Sub modules were assigned to each team through a small game. Participants

bought the components required to complete model assigned to them. This round

tested the basic knowledge of electronics in space systems.

Round 3: In this round participants designed their respective module using

PRAYOGeek kit and tested their module with various test cases. Volunteers helped

the teams in using the PRAYOGeek kit.

The 2 winning teams walked away with kits worth 10,000/- each, and an amount of

76,200 was sponsored for the event.

2. Space Junk

This event was conducted on the 15th with industry collaboration from Sienna Ecad

Technologies Pvt LTD. The event coordinators were K V Sai Akhil and Ajay V. The

faculty coordinator was Prof. Archana H R. The event was basically a Hardware

Hackathon and was divided into two sessions, Session I – Building (4 ½ hours) and

Session II – Presentation. 10 teams attended the event. Components worth 40,000 was

provided for the event Conduction by B-Automate.

3. Gazing With Machine Learning

This event was held on the 15th with industry collaboration from Viga Studios. The

event coordinators were Akshit Bhallaand Goutham S. The faculty coordinator was

Prof. Sanjana T. Participants were able to learn Python programming, supervised

learning and classification problem. They had hands-on on handwritten digit

recognition.

4. FURY ROAD V 4.0

Fury Road, the flagship event of the ECE department, where students learnt the basics

of embedded system and interfacing microcontrollers with various components, was

conducted on the 15th and 16th. The industry collaboration was with Silverline

Electronics, who provided one Raspberry Pi zero worth Rs. 1800 + 20 MAGPI

Magzines Rs. worth 11,000 and a total sponsorship of 27,800 rupees. The event

coordinators were Nidesh D Shetty and Varun K V Ithal. The faculty coordinator was

Prof. K Sujatha.

5. The Missing Spacecraft

This event was conducted on the 15th with industry collaboration from Pushkala

Technologies, who sponsored an amount of 10,000/-. The event comprised of two

rounds.The first round was a screening round where the participants were tested of

their aptitude and basic aspects of digital electronics involving the number systems.

The second round of the event was the treasure hunt round wherein the 8 teams

competed fairly and tried their best to escape the traps of the web of networks which

were surrounding them. A total of 17 teams took part in the event. The event

coordinators were Ashish S Bharma and Ankit Kumar. The faculty coordinator was

Prof. Radha R C.

6. Space Pellicule

The event was conducted on the 15th and 16th in collaboration with On

Semiconductor, who provided a sponsorship amount of 5000/-. A Reference video

was given to the contestants 3 days before the event for the first round of day 1. After

screening all the videos of the contestants, a quiz was conducted with a break of 15

minutes. At end of the second round, a topic (space colonization) was given to the

contestants and have make video of it of 5min max. Based on the video content, the

winner was announced. 5 teams participated in the event. The event coordinators were

Sudarshan M J and Nataraj J. The faculty coordinator was Prof. Pushpa K.

7. FEKO Workshop: Antenna Design and Simulation Tool

This workshop was conducted on the 15th in collaboration with Silicon Microsystems

and Altair Engineering India Private Limited. A brief corporate introduction about

Altair was first provided prior to the actual session. A quick overview about FEKO

software was conducted. Key applications of the tool in various domains were

discussed during this session. UI components of the tool was discussed. Applications

of FEKO in antenna design labs was introduced. Antenna designs for IOT with FEKO

was discussed. Few industrial applications were demonstrated during the session. The

event coordinators were Karthik Raj S andGagan L Naik. The faculty coordinator was

Dr. Siddappaji.

8. Workshop on Power of Altair Technology for design of complex machines

This workshop was conducted on the 15thin collaboration with Altair Engineering

India Pvt Ltd. The Workshop was about challenges and difficulties in building

complex machines for space systems such as satellites and launch systems. 13

students attended the workshop. The event coordinator was Aditya K P Patil. The

faculty coordinator was Dr. Kiran Bailey.

9. Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Deep Neural Networks

This workshop was conducted on 15th and16thin collaboration with Ejnana. The

students got insights into practical aspects right from foundation to build models or

applications for computer vision using various tools. Hands on sessions on various

mathematical details and deep learning frameworks used in artificial intelligence and

deep neural networks were conducted. The event coordinators were A. Vipula and

Ruchi Agrawal. The faculty coordinator was Prof. Lalitha S.

Department of Information Science and Engineering

The Department of Information Science and Engineering held five events and one workshop

during Phase Shift 2018. The list of events were:

1. LOGO MANIA V4.0

Logo Mania v4.0 – The flagship event of the ISE Department, BMSCE was

conducted in collaboration with Byju’s on the 15th of September 2018 as a

part of Phase Shift 18’.There were 30 participants were present on the day of

the event.

ROUND 1: The first round was a taboo round in which randomized teams

were formed and the participants were asked to choose one fellow teammate to

describe the logo that was given.

ROUND 2: This round was a memory based round. Participants were shown a

slide for 30 seconds and then asked to pen down as many logos as possible

on sheets that were provided in 1 minute.

The event coordinators were Gene Anand and Anjali Kulkarni. The faculty

coordinator was Dr. N. Sandeep Varna.

2. Capture The Flag

The event Capture the Flag was held on 15th, in collaboration with Byju’s. The event

coordinators were M S Shreyas and Prakhar Chaube. The faculty coordinator was

Mrs. Indra Srinivas. A total of 63 students participated in the event.

3. Gameofcodes v2.0

Game of Codes v2.0 was a 3-hr long coding competition where the participants

were given 5 questions, and their ability to give the most efficient code for the

given problems was tested. The participants could come as individual

participants or in teams of 2 members each. A total of 45 teams participated in the

event. The event coordinators were Saket Chirania and Harika Jayanti. The faculty

coordinator was Mrs. Soumya K S.

4. All Stars Battlegrounds

All stars Battlegrounds - a gaming event of ISE department, was a huge

success and got the highest registrations. The teams were evenly divided into

two rooms and league matches of 3 rounds were conducted. Points were

awarded accordingly and 30 teams with highest scores were further sent to

final round. A total of 66 teams (2 in each team) participated in the event. The event

coordinators were Yash Kesharwani and Aishwarya E Patil. The faculty coordinator

was Mrs Indra Srinivas.

5. Codearena

A battlefield where contestants put to test both their debugging and coding

skills in one on one battle.

Round 1: A debugging round consisting of seven programming questions given

in C++, difficulty ranging from easy to hard. A time limit of 30 minutes was

given to complete the questions. The platform used was Hacker rank.

Round 2: A knockout round where teams battle with other teams in a coding

contest. The winner of the battle is the team that codes the fastest. The

platform used for the battles was codingame.

30 teams took part in the event. The event coordinators were Sanjana M Moodbagil

6. WORKSHOP BY WAFERSPACE

Workshop on Real time operating system for automotive applications in

association with “Waferspace” was conducted on 16th September 2018.

Participants were from different colleges belonging to Information Science,

Computer Science, Electrical Communication, Civil, Telecommunication,

Instrumentation, Mechanical Engineering streams. The Workshop was held for

two hours and it was conducted by an industry expert, Mr. Giri Vellian. A brief

introduction of the topic was given. Industry trends and automation of cars was

discussed by Mr. Giri Vellian. There was a Q&A session where the students

asked questions to our speaker. 20 students participated in the workshop. The event

coordinators were Aishwarya Deshpande and Niveditha M. The faculty coordinator

was Mrs. Surabhi S.

Department of Medical Electronics

The Department of Medical Electronics held two events and two workshops during Phase

Shift 2018. The list of events were:

1. Beyond The Skies Workshop

The event was conducted by Dr.Raveesha.KH on 15th September, 2018 .He has

conducted several such workshops for underprivileged kids and in several other colleges.

The event started off with basic introduction to telescopes and using them for sky

observation. This was followed by making of the telescope, which was conducted very

smoothly and efficiently by Dr.Raveesha.KH. Participants were able to keep up with the

step by step demonstration by him and enthusiastically reproduced the said steps to make

a telescope of their own. The telescopes were made by the participants in about 15

minutes and all the participants were successful. This was followed by using the made

telescope to observe sky.

2. Geospatial World

Geospatial world is a satellite image processing and pattern recognition hands-on

workshop conducted by Mr.Niyas S, a researcher and developer in image processing

and computer vision algorithms. The workshop included working on software such as

MATLAB.

The workshop had a turnout of 39 participants from various colleges across

Bangalore. The workshop was concluded by acknowledging the speaker followed by

a vote of thanks by the HOD. The event coordinators were Ananya KAMATH and

Chandana Priya.The faculty coordinator was Dr. Manisha Joshi.

3. Sane In Space

Humans are bound to exhaust the earth's resources as we know it. We may hit the

apocalypse sooner than predicted, and when we do, we need to be ready.

NASA powered up the Orion Spacecraft, bringing renewed attention to a new and

exciting era of space exploration – a human mission to Mars.

Now we want you to come up with the solution. How are we as a race, to survive on

Mars?

If we were to finally colonize the planet, how would we thrive there, with the ease and

simplicity of thriving on Earth?

4. Techno Teaser

The event was conducted on the 15th.This was a circuit building event were teams of

two had to build a proximity sensor. The components were provided by the

department laboratory. The event got a total of 6 team registrations.

The event consisted of two rounds. The first round was a crossword puzzle based on

space systems. This was conducted in classroom ML5001 and the participating teams

were given 20 minutes. Out of the 5 teams that took part, 3 teams qualified to the

second round. In the second round, the participants were given a problem statement,

the answer to which was a ‘proximity sensor’. The participating teams were allowed

to use the internet for 20 minutes to obtain a circuit diagram and then were moved to

the analog laboratory to build their own proximity sensors. The second round was

judged by the department HoD, Dr. S.B. Bhanu Prashanth.

The Event Coordinators were Ashmita Deb and Sharadhi U Bharadwaj. The Faculty

Coordinator was Mrs. R Kalpana.

Department of Management Studies

The Department of Management studies actively participated in the symposium with 4

student events. The list of events are:

1. Business Plan Competition

Participants had to propose a business plan based on the theme ‘Cost efficient and

integrated technology systems plan to be developed’. A total of 7 teams participated in

the event.

2. Ad Making

Participants had to present a video ad about the space system businesses. A total of 6

teams participated in the event.

3. Block and tackle

Block and tackle put participants in situations where they have to contradict their own

opinion on issues related to the theme. A total of 19 teams participated in this event.

4. Inquizitive

The event will test the participant’s knowledge about various aspects of business &

related issues including Space Systems. A total of 31 teams participated in the event.

The colleges who participated in the events include BMSCE, DSV, BNMIT, Jain College,

Surana College, CIMS, NITK, RNSIT and Dr. At. A sponsorship amount of 11.000 rupees

was procured.

Department of Industrial Engineering Management

The Department of Industrial Engineering Management conducted five events and one

workshops.The list of events are:

1. Space Tank

Space tank is the flagship even of the department of Industrial Engineering and

Management conducted on the 15th and 16th.

Round 1(day 1): The participating teams were given the topic of ‘Space Systems’

based on which they had to design products and components on CAD designing

softwares. Each team was given a maximum of three hours during which they could

design their model. Once the teams were done designing their products, they had

to submit the files for evaluation by the judges who would be coming on day two.

Round 2(day 2): On the second day, the teams were required to make a

presentation for the products they had created so that they could be evaluated. The

teams were judged for an overall of fifty marks on different parameters like CAD

design, aesthetics, marketing skills, presentation skills, and preparation and

persuasion skills.

The event coordinators were Adithya Prasad and S Madhusudhan.

2. String Theory

Each team was first explained about the event and then asked to design the shortest

path to complete the terrain designed. After plotting a string diagram for the same the

participants guided the RC car provided along the same path to finish in the shortest

time. Participants were then briefed about the concept of string diagram and its use in

Industrial Engineering. String used in the designed path was measured and time taken

to complete the course with the RC car was recorded as criteria for winning. The

event was conducted on the 15th. 12 teams participated in the event. The event

coordinators were Nithin Rao and Omar Syed.

3. Vaders Of Wall Street

The event was conducted on the second day of Phase Shift, 16th September

2018. It consisted of two rounds; a preliminary round, which consisted of a

simple 20 question quiz based on stocks and space systems. The total number of

participants was 20 and the top 12 teams were selected for the second and final

round. The stock market simulation was a huge success and went well with

every participant. Every team was involved in the task at hand and gave it

their all to come up best. The event coordinators were Pranav P and Mukul M.

4. It’s Not Rocket Science

With the premise of a space shuttle crash landing on a strange planet, facing

broken lines of communication and limited fuel, ‘It’s Not Rocket Science’ set out to

challenge its participants with encoded clues and carefully constructed planet and

shuttle terrain. The event drew upon participants deductive skills and incorporated

techniques of communication often employed by astronauts exploring space. Trapped

with Morse encrypted codes, starry constellations, Star Wars inspired music and

limited time, the objective of the event was to create an environment where

participants were expected to ‘break out’ using the clues provided to them. The

event saw over thirty teams participate with glowing feedback.The event coordinators

were Nireesha Pairuand Srinica Hampi.

5. Space Rider

The participants had to clear a space themed obstacle course on either a geared or

a non-geared two wheeler based on their preference . The Track was designed

based on our solar system. Different planets, asteroid belt and rockets were designed

to replicate the solar system. These were then incorporated into the track as obstacles.

The participants competed to finish the obstacle course in the least time possible ,

putting their observation , judgment and riding skills to Test.The event coordinators

were Sameera Joshi and Tejas Gowdar.

6. SOLIDWORKS WORKSHOP

The participants were introduced to the various basic lingo and concepts of the

designing before beginning to work on the solid works software itself. Each

participant was provided with an individual system to work on with personal guidance

at each step along with immediate doubt clarifications. After learning the basic tools

and functions of the software the participants were instructed to try designing a

few basic parts and were also made familiar with the assembly features of the tool.

The participants were exposed to multiple functions that they could explore and learn

later on if they wished to do so. The event coordinators were Raghu Joshiand

Tejaswin S.

Department of Electronics and Instrumentation

The Department of Electronics and Instrumentation conducted four events and one

workshops. The list of events are:

1. Look!! Skywalker

This was the flag-ship event of the department. The genesis of the event was due to

the humble and resourceful collaboration with Modelicon Infotech. They also co-

sponsored this event along with Mandeep Marble. The event coordinators were

Pranav M and Pranav C Kumar. The faculty coordinator was Dr.Veena Hegde.

2. Data Acquisition For Space Systems

This event was conducted on the 15th in collaboration with SYRCO and SASMOS.

The program started off by a general question round where the students were asked to

ask a few general questions about space and space systems, by which we learnt how

satellite is used for finding position of person or a thing using the horizontal or

vertical skills. After the break they learnt about the Raspberry Pi is with a demo,

which included the stages of complications as well. We also learnt how to connect

Rasberry Pi3 along with many commands like RMDIR, CD, LS, MKDIR, etc. and

executed a program. The event coordinators were Shreyas, Ananya, Amulya, and

Sonal. The faculty coordinators was Dr.Santosh R Desai and Prof.Namratha S.N.

3. Automation In Space System

The event was held on 15th September. The event coordinators were RACHANA and

RISHIKA from 5th semester of EIE and the faculty coordinator was Prof. Kumuda S.

The event was conducted by collaborating with Sunlux Technovations PVT.ltd. There

were two resource persons Lakshmi Prakash and Basavaraj D M from the company

Sunlux Technovations PVT.ltd. The event took place in two rounds. 13 teams of three

members each participated with zeal and enthusiasm. The first involved a talk by

Lakshmi ma’am based on Temperature Data Acquisition & Control System. This

session was followed by a Quiz consisting of about 20 questions solely based on the

talk. The top 4 scoring teams qualified for the second round. The second round was an

exciting one as it involved a Hands-0n session with the Temperature & Power Supply

Processing Unit. Prior to this, Basavaraj Sir and Lakshmi ma’am also conducted a

demonstration session so as to teach the participants on how to handle the unit.

4. Jury Presentation

Jury presentation was an event held by the Department of Electronics and

Instrumentation Engineering during Phase Shift 2018 on the 16th of September. It

was a one day event and it was headed by Dr. Arvind Iyer. It was a Paper presentation

competition which required the participants to use their innovative paper design ideas

of sensor and actuators in space system. The contestants were then judged based on

rubrics like organization, creativity, references, conclusions and other criteria. Two

teams were declared as winners among the five. The event coordinators were Preethi

G and Vignesh KS. The faculty coordinator was Prof. Ajay Kumar D.

5. Plc Latest Technologies In Automation Of Space Systems

The most used guiding force behind a space system is a “Programmable Logic

Controller” generally known as a PLC. PLCs along with certain other necessary

ingredients like Sensors, Motors, SCADA Systems, Computers & many more, makes

a Real Automation. The guests and resource persons of this event were from

Mitsubishi Electric and they came and taught the students about PLC systems. The

students learnt a lot on the basics of PLC systems and the industry based PLC

systems.

Department of MCA

The Department of MCA conducted five events and one workshop. The list of events are:

1. Sceptical Quest

Sceptical Quest was an event similar to treasure hunt on the theme “Sci-fi” movies

and was conducted on the 16th. In first round, 9 photos of random places in our

college were given. The participants had to go to each place and take a selfie with all

the team members. Out of 31 teams, 16 teams were qualified for second round.

In second round the contestants had to solve a buzz word which was based on sci-fi

movie. 8 teams were qualified for third round. In third round there were 4-5 clues,

each one leading to the next clue. Each correctly solved clue carried 10 points. The

clues had to be found in a particular order. And the final clue was leading to the

treasure and the team which finds the treasure wins first. The event coordinators were

Musaddiq Khan and Harshit Jaina.

2. Encrypto-Decrypt

The event commenced by the arrival of various teams from different

Colleges. Then the resource person arrived, escorted by faculty

Coordinator Lakshminarayan P. We had a short introduction about our

Resource person Mr. Manjunath who is the Project Manager at

Bosch. Then there was bouquet presentation to the invited resource

Person and the event began. It was followed by a welcome speech

Given by the faculty coordinator PLN. It was a truly mesmerizing

Event as the teams from various colleges participated. We had 60

Contestants, forming 30 teams. There were three rounds in the event. The Faculty

Coordinator was Prof. Lakshminarayan P.

3. Flick

Flick was a short movie making event where the participants had to prepare a short

movie of 3-4 minutes based on the theme Space Systems. The event coordinators

were Shashank S and Goutham K. The faculty coordinator was Dr. K Vijaykumar.

The judges for this event were Balaji G.S, Dr. K. Vijaykumar, T.S Pushpa, and

S.Shilpa.

4. Toggling

The event was conducted on 15th September, 2018. It began with a short introduction

about the resource person Mr. Selwyn Paul J who is the Assistant Professor of St.

Joseph’s College, Bangalore. There were 16 contestants. Contestants were given a

topic related to space. When the judge said toggle,

They had to shift from the advantages to the disadvantages and vice versa. The event

coordinators were Sushmitha B and Ranjitha S. The faculty coordinator was pro. S

Shilpa.

5. Space Build

Space build was an event where participants had to design a web page based on a

given theme. It had two rounds. In each round separate theme was given and based on

the theme participants designed a web page. In first round the theme was ”Satellites”

and after the completion of first round out of 20 teams 5 teams were qualified for

second round. The theme given in second round was “Journey of Space System in

India”. A total of 20 teams participated in the event. The event coordinators were

Bharath S and Anusha R. The faculty coordinators were Prof. S Uma and Prof. V

Padmapriya.

6. Workshop On Space Intelligence

The workshop is held by the two scientists from ISRO Dr. Shubha v and

Lakshminarayan. The first session was held by Shubha v .She is distinguished

scientist, CSIR airport instrumentation, national aerospace laboratories on state of the

art made in India products for aerospace sector. The learning process started from

Contribution to Indian space and defence through make in India. Dr Shubha V ended

up the session with some information about all features and applications of Drishti,

and she spoke about awards and honour for Drishti. She said that it has the application

of various branches like physics, mechanics, Computer Science, optics, electronics.

Second Session was held by N Lakshmi Narayana, Scientist/Engineer-SG & DY.

General Manager on ‘Glimpses of Indian Space Programme’.

Department of Telecommunication Engineering

The Department of Telecommunication Engineering conducted four events and one

workshop. The list of events are:

1. Project J

The event focused on the use of E-Junk and making something useful out of the junk

electronic components provided. The participants of this event were judged on the

basis of their mini projects which they made out of the components. The event

witnessed participation of students from first semester to fifth semester. The

participants were provided a duration of two hours to put their innovative ideas into

play and build up their mini projects.

This event challenged the thinking ability of the students. It indeed, encouraged the

participants to think beyond what is regularly taught in class and sparked ideas in the

budding engineers as to how they could make something useful and extraordinary

from the ordinary junk materials.

The event was judged by Mr.Manoj Desai and Mr.Subhash Hegde and the first

positionwas bagged by first semester students who made a mini project on Flash LED

using 555 timer and won a cash prize of rupees 1000. The second position was bagged

by third semester students who made a mini project on Touch Sensor and won a cash

prize of rupees 650. The event coordinators were Srijan Tiwari and Karthik MP. The

faculty coordinator was Prof. P S Gowra.

2. T REX Hunt

The main idea behind the event was to test the knowledge of the participants in basic

electronics and circuit building.There were five teams in total and each team was

supposed to build their own receivers and decode the morse coded signals which led

them to the next transmitter. A chatbot was designed on telegram app which was

programmed using Python 3.0 in order to verify the decoded word. The participants

built their receivers from the components provided which had TSOP1738 that would

receive the Morse code emitted by the transmitter which was pre-programmed using

Arduino IDE and the output was detected by their receivers which had a normal LED,

in the form of Morse code (1blink-dot; 3 consecutive blinks-dashes). The event

coordinators were Anmol Agrawal and Anagha K H. A total of 17 students

participated in the event.

3. Defuse

The Telecom department conducted

its flagship event DEFUSE on the

second day of the annual technical

fest of BMSCE Phase Shift. Defuse a

competition where participants built

prototype circuits for

aircrafts/spacecraft safety. The event

saw innovative minds come together

in teams of 3-4, to learn, enhance their knowledge and understanding of aircraft safety

and add their own safety features to circuits. In attendance was CG Narasimha Prasad,

flight test engineer flight operations, HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) as the

resource person. The event started with an introduction to helicopter and systems

from him. He further enlightened them on engineers’ major role in aircrafts, design

specifications and systems. He also explained them parameters they could work upon

to provide their own safety features. The next part was participants applying concepts

to design their block diagrams first on paper, then by realizing it using basic

electronic components like breadboards, IC trainer kits, resistors, etc. There are a total

of 40 participants. The event coordinators were Aditi Jalaj and Namratha R. The

faculty coordinator was Prof. C Gururaj.

4. ARDUI-KNOW!

ARDUI-KNOW! Mainly focused on giving a basic knowledge of the working of the

arduino to the participants and bringing out the innovative ideas in them in order to

build mini projects. The event was conducted for two days. Around 11 teams with a

team size of 4-5 were present. The participants included BMSCE and non-BMSCE

students. On the first day, 15th September, there was a basic hands on workshop

handled by the resource people from The Engineering Store for 3hrs (12pm - 3pm).

On the second day, 16th September, the event started at 8:30am. Each team was asked

to prepare a PPT regarding the project they wanted to work on and the practical

implementation of it .Each team gave the presentation for not more than 5 min. The

competition was held for 3hrs (9:30-12:30).The resource people gave the right

guidance to all the teams in making their mini projects. Towards the end all the teams

were once again asked to explain and present the projects to the judge. Mr.BGS

Srinivas was the judge for the competition. Based on the technical aspect, creativity,

application of theoretical knowledge and other criteria, the top three teams were

selected and given the kits .The event was successfully concluded by our HOD, Dr.

Rajeshwari Hegde. The faculty coordinator was Prasannna Kumar. The event

coordinators were Amshu Kamal K and Vibha S Prasad.

5. Workshop On Vsat Based Wide Area Networks

A workshop on "VSAT BASED WIDE AREA NETWORKS" was conducted by the

Telecommunication department on 16 September 2018 during Phase shift 2018.The

workshop was presented by Samba Murthy C V. Samba Murthy is a seasoned

professional with over 33 years of experience of working with a wide range of

technologies which includes RF/ MW, Telecom, Light wave, and Networking. He

has the unique experience of successfully delivering professional services at various

Corporate, Educational Institutes which include training programs, workshops, faculty

development programs and test automation solutions. The workshop started by an

introduction to the fundamentals of networking. Network configuration: IP address,

subnet mask, default gateway, DHCP server, DNS services, MAC address was

explained. The different Networking tasks such as design, plan, prepare, implement,

operate, sustain, troubleshoot was taught. Various types of connections such as

switches and routers and their functions were briefly explained. The different parts

which constitute a network such as the switch, routers ,firewall, WAN, VPN , IPS ,

IDS was shown in a block diagram form .After a brief introduction to networking , a

hands on experience was given by asking the participants to build a small office

network project using the CISCO packet tracer software . The codes were given and

explained. He taught how to execute the project. A total of 23 students participated in

the workshop. The event coordinators were Amrutha V and Aparna. The faculty

coordinator was Prof. Srinivas B.

6. Raspberry Pi Workshop

It was held on the 15th. Anil B.S (Alumni Telecom department) along with Priyanka

(Co-founder of Octet electronics Solutions) conducted the workshop. The workshop

started with the basics of Raspberry Pi: What it is? How is it being used?, Various

Applications, Models etc. Some of the applications of the Raspberry pi as Email

Notification light, Media Player, Wall mounted Google calendar, drone with camera,

A.I Navigation, N.A.S, Robotic Navigation and Pi Cubesat were shown in the session.

Following the applications of Raspberry Pi was the Linux session. Anil explained on

what Linux is and where it is employed in real life like U.S Dept of Defence, CERN,

and Federal Aviation Administration etc. Following these was the introduction of the

Raspbian which is used as an Operating System for Raspberry Pi. With this the first

session called for a 10 minutes break. GPIO pin manipulation using Python in RPi

was taught. The event coordinators were Sakchi Sinha and Rahul M. The faculty

coordinator was Prof. Anusha Lalitha.

7. Ham WORKSHOP

A workshop on 'HAM – Amateur Radio’ was organized by the department of

Telecommunication of BMSCE for the students interested in the wireless

communication and electronics. Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, describes

the use of radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of

messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radio

sport, contesting, and emergency communication. The term "amateur" is used to

specify "a duly authorised person interested in radio electric practice with a purely

personal aim and without pecuniary interest" and to differentiate it from commercial

broadcasting, public safety (such as police and fire), or professional two-way

radio services (such as maritime, aviation, taxis, etc.). The Faculty Coordinator was

Archana A R. The event coordinators were Yashavi R Machani and Urvi Ajit Jere.

There were a total of 39 participants.

Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Telecommunication Engineering conducted three events and one

workshop. The list of events are:

1. Remote Sensing And GIS Workshop

The workshop was conducted in collaboration with Mukesh Assocaites on the 16th

and was a platform to learn about coordinate points, Satellites, Remote sensing, GPS,

Google maps and many more. A major part in civil engineering is surveying and RS

and GIS is the most advanced and fastest way of surveying. The event coordinators

were Viren Marlecha and Sarw Tanay. The faculty coordinator was Prof. Sreenivasa

Murthy A. A total of 40 students participated in the event.

2. Tracking The Coordinates

Tracking a main treasure using geocodes also called as coordinate points using google

maps. A coordinate point leads to another point and finally leads to a treasure. The

least time taken to find the treasure by any of the team is considered the winner. The

event involved quick wit with knowledge in civil field. The event coordinators were

Vivek Ramaiya and Varsha L Meshta. The faculty coordinator was Dr. Reshmidevi T

V. A total of 12 teams participated in the event.

3. Civionics

A quiz, JAM and a Pictionary event on space engineering evolving Civil engineering

in it. Classified in 3 rounds with elimination in each. The one with the highest points

in the last round is classified as the winner. The event coordinators were Vijesha

Rajput and Pranav Gowda .The faculty coordinator was Dr. Ganesh K. A total of 11

teams participated in the event.

4. Glider Design

Glider surveying is the most new type of surveying introduced. This competition

Is intended to provide the students to deal with real-life design challenge. The

students are supposed to design a glider with the given materials. The farthest the

glider goes with the most appropriate design is considered as winner. The event

coordinators were Pranav P Shettigar and Sharath Sandhur .The faculty coordinator

was Dr. Sanjeev. A total of 4 teams participated in the event

BMSCE QUIZ CLUB

The BMSCE Quiz Club hosted two quizzes for Phase Shift 2018. The Flagship event, Sci-

Tech Quiz, hosted by Anand Krishnan, was met with tough competition by the 15 teams, but

in the end, PESU’s Lone-wolf Pretham Upadhaya took the crown while RVCE’S Nagendra

and Shreyas won second place. The General Quiz, hosted by Ayush Murthy and Suhas G Pai,

was the tower on the hill reignited by the passion of over 25 teams from across India. The RV

Quiz Corp won first with Nagendra and Adithya and Pretham came second.

VALEDICTORY CEREMONY – PHASE SHIFT 2018.

The Valedictory Ceremony of Phase Shift 2018 was held on 16th of September 2018 in the

Indoor Stadium. The function was addressed by Dr Ravishankar B V (Principal, BMSCE).

Dr. Ravishankar Deekshit, (Working Chairman, Phase Shift 2018) addressed the gathering

by thanking everyone for making this event a grand success. Then, one of the members of

The Alpha Design Technologies, Dr. Uday Kumar spoke about our theme Space Systems and

how they managed to display exciting projects and models in the stalls and mentioned about

the exciting events which were conducted on the span of 2 days.

The Best Department Award after looking upon all the criteria was given to Electronics &

Communication Engineering, followed by First Runner Up was Telecommunication

Engineering, Second Runner Up being Electrical & Electronics Engineering. These

awards were presented by Dr.Uday Kumar (Alumni,BMSCE, Member of ADTL) and Dr.

H.K.Rangavittal.

There were participants from the Rohilkhand University who were honored on the stage.

Even the Alumni of BMSCE graced the occasion. The function successfully ended with vote

of thanks presented by Dr Pradeepa S (Organizing Secretary, Phase Shift 2018).
