TEACHING GARDENS • 3 ACRES
The teaching gardens will serve as a venue for both outdoor teaching and demonstrations. This area will feature a collection of thematic gardens focused on our gardening heritage and the impact other cultures have had on Texas gardening. In addition, there will be a children’s garden, an area devoted to Texas Superstar® plants, rotating student-designed-and-constructed gardens, a butterfly garden and a garden featuring human-use plants and herbs.
PAVILION • 3,200 SQUARE FEET
The complex will contain an open-air pavilion, a solid-roofed structure for teaching, educational programs and social events. The pavilion will have a 200-person capacity and will be equipped with a projector and monitor.
SCHOOLHOUSE • 3,200 SQUARE FEET
The schoolhouse at the Teaching Gardens Complex is a climate-controlled training center that provides a venue for educational programs and social events. Accommodating 150 people, it will feature a large, fully-equipped training space that can be divided into two areas. It will also include a demonstration kitchen, office, conference room and restrooms.
GREENHOUSE • 3,000 SQUARE FEET
This climate-controlled facility will be used for growing, maintaining, propagating and handling plant material and will include teaching/training equipment for laboratory instruction and educational programming.

ROSE GARDEN • 34,492 SQUARE FEET
With strong concentric circle designs and a central arbor, this picturesque garden will be one of the major features of the Gardens and Greenway. Plantings will focus on Texas-tough rose species and varieties tested and developed at Texas A&M within the Earth-Kind® Environmental Stewardship program and the Bayse-Moore Rose Breeding program. The Rose Garden, arbor and terrace will also be a venue for weddings and special events.
BARN • 2,500 SQUARE FEET
The barn functions as the support building for the greenhouse and will be used for potting, propagation and workshop activities. In addition to serving as a training venue for outdoor equipment use and maintenance, the barn will store vehicles and equip-ment. A second floor loft will provide additional training and storage space.
CABIN WITH OFFICES • 1,500 SQUARE FEET
The cabin will provide office space, a break room and a locker room for garden staff and volunteers. It will also include a multipurpose meeting room.
THE GROVE AMPHITHEATER • 33,106 SQUARE FEET
The Grove Amphitheater will serve as one of the major features of the Texas A&M Gardens and Greenway by recreating the enduring legacy of the original campus landmark and the home of many Yell Practices, movie nights and social events. The Grove’s capacity will range from 500 to 1,000 people, with both assigned seating areas and lawn seating. Daily usage of the amphitheater will focus on educating students and visitors by accommodating small classroom lectures and labs, study groups and weekend workshops. The amphitheater’s architecture will draw inspira-tion from the original Grove with simple stage lines, green benches for seating and a perimeter of trees.
Phase 2

Phase 3AGRILIFE CENTER MAIN ENTRANCE AND BOULEVARD GARDEN • 2.25 ACRES This entranceway will create a strong sense of arrival to the AgriLife Center and the Texas A&M Gardens and Greenway. In addition to serving as a visual focal point on West Campus, the boulevard landscaping will provide an outdoor gathering space for students and visitors.
COURTYARD • 1 ACRE
Providing a gathering space for students and visitors to the Gardens and Greenway, the courtyard will include an outdoor dining area adjacent to existing indoor café; a student study area; and a vista pointe overlooking the greenway and serving as an assembly and photo pointe. Perennial flowers will flank a lawn area where tents can be raised for educational and social events.
ENDOWED DIRECTORSHIP
The director’s position is critical to the long-term success of the initiative. An endow-ment to financially support the position enhances the ability to attract and retain the highest quality professional public garden manager.
Phase 4HOWDY STATION • 1 ACRE
The Howdy Station will be a railroad-themed bus stop and restroom area for visitors to the Gardens and Greenway. Three open-air pavilions will provide shade and shelter for students and visitors as well as rentable space for farmers’ markets, tailgates and other social events. Rainwater harvesting and solar power will make the restrooms sustainable. Rotating Aggie-themed plantings and a “HOWDY!” sign will provide photo backdrops.
POST OAK SAVANNAH ECOSYSTEM • 15 ACRES (TOTAL)
This “wildscaping” initiative will create an arboretum by revitalizing the Post Oak Savannah ecosystem and wildlife habitat that exists along White Creek with native trees, shrubs, prairie grasses and wildflowers. Pathways and trails will provide scenic areas for students and visitors to enjoy.
FEED THE WORLD PLAZA • 1.5 ACRES
The Feed the World Plaza will celebrate the contributions of Dr. Norman Borlaug and other plant and animal breeders of Texas A&M University. The location for the plaza is a pedestrian path used daily by thousands of students. This area will serve as rentable space for game day tailgating, farmers’ markets and graduation day celebrations. Plaza gardens will showcase plants that help feed the world, including specific crops improved by Texas A&M scientists.
TOXIC PLANT DISPLAY
Students and visitors will learn about toxic plant species in this educational display and demonstration garden. Annual propagation and planting will be required to maintain an extensive toxic plant collection, and a satellite garden display would be located at the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Funding would also support a web-based virtual plant display.

COFFEE STATION AND VISITOR CENTER • 1.2 ACRES This roadside entrance in close proximity to the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum will feature a large coffee shop with an outdoor patio. The building will reflect the core principles of conservation, sustainability and a connection to the land through construction materials, rainwater harvesting and solar power.
