Message

Pharmacy is among the most important disciplines in healthcare. In Pakistan, a highly developed production sector in Pharmaceutical industry has created an ever-expanding demand for pharmacy graduates.

The Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, JSMU, is a new establishment with an elaborate undergraduate (Pharm.D) programme according to the guidelines provided by the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan and the Higher Education Commission.

The Institute offers a programme of education and practical training in community oriented Clinical Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy, Forensic Pharmacy, Drug Administration, and drug related laws among others. A postgraduate (M.Phil., Ph.D.) programme is also being planned.

At the IPS, our main objective is to prepare pharmacists who promote effective use of drugs with commitment and dedication. We pray to Allah to bless our endeavours in this noble cause (Ameen).

Introduction

Pharmacy, along with the other disciplines in health education, is a necessity for the healthcare system of any country. Pharmacy education at our is based on traditional, scientific, clinical, and Institute pharmaceutical knowledge with the goal of training undergraduate students into competent and professionally committed healthcare personnel. The graduates of our programmes are pharmacists with thorough understanding of the pharmaceutical principles and therapeutic application of drug substances.Since the Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) was chartered in March 2013, it has started several programmes and initiatives under the guidance of the Vice Chancellor, with untiring efforts from our dedicated and hardworking members. The Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences started the five-year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) programme in January 2014, within a short span of time since the inception of the University. The first batch of Pharm D will be graduating later this year at the JSMU's Second Convocation.

Vision and Mission

Pharmacy is a highly challenging and rewarding profession. The Institute of Pharmaceutical sciences at the JSMU was established with the vision to improve health and healthcare services in Pakistan. Worldwide trends in pharmacy education are changing. Drug-oriented pharmacy has now given way to patient-oriented pharmacy. The IPS is adapting to this changing trend by incorporating innovations in clinical applications, latest research in pharmacy, and modern drug development process into its curriculum. It is the Institute 's mission is to modernize pharmacy education in Pakistan and provide high quality professionals to the pharmaceutical industry to raise its standards.

Goals and objectives

The goal of Pharm.D education has been modernized according to the key values of patient-oriented standards of pharmacy. The five-year Pharm.D curriculum directs the attention of pharmacists towards the patients, training them to apply their education in the preparation, quality control, safety of medicinally active substances, their formulation, and the supply of quality medicine to the patients.Our objectives are to: Enhance the standard of healthcare through excellence in pharmacy education, patient care, and

research,

Produce highly competent pharmacists with in depth knowledge of science and practice of clinical techniques;

Use information technology to access and manage knowledge, evaluate statistically, and to integrate evidence from scientific studies into practice,

Foster professional competence and life-long learning in students; Help students contribute to the profession and society by demonstrating qualities of professional

care, teamwork and leadership; Teach students to communicate and interact effectively with patients, other healthcare

professionals, and the community; Prepare students to identify the challenges confronting the field of pharmacy; determine effective

means of responding to these challenges; Impart skills and attitudes including interpersonal communication skills and personal attributes as

self-awareness and an innovative mindset; and Be leaders in education, research, practice, and services.

The Institute is following the approved curriculum and semester-based guidelines of the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan (PCP) and Higher Education of Pakistan (HEC). The Institute has a very impressive teacher student ratio (1:10) in accordance with the recommendations of the PCP. The Institute building is situated within 200 yards of JSMU's teaching hospitals, which are integral and important resources for pharmacy education. Our spacious five-storeyed building occupies a total covered area of nearly 50,000 sq. ft. Its five lecture halls have the capacity of 100 students each and are equipped with multimedia and digital sound system. The building also has nine essentially equipped laboratories, a library, a girls' common room, faculty offices, and a council room. Twelve Ph.D.s in different disciplines of Pharmacy are members of our team. In future, the Institute aims to become the leader in pharmacy education among public sector universities. It will comprise five teaching and research departments with scientifically equipped laboratories: Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy practice, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical chemistry, and Pharmacognosy. Postgraduate programmes (M.Phil. / Ph.D.) in all five disciplines are also being planned.

Facilities

LibraryIPS has two spacious (Reference and Lending) libraries storing 2774 books with 617 titles (1353 books are present in the reference library and 1421in the lending library). This comprehensive collection comprises latest editions of pharmacy books. Four international and four national periodicals are available in the main library. Photocopy facility is available within the premises.

Digital LibraryThe Institute provides computer facilities with their application in Pharmacy and offers extensive usage hours, state-of-the art hardware, and a variety of software. Broadband information network facility is available.

CanteenA newly built canteen is present in the premises of IPS providing fresh hygienic food items at reasonable rates for students.

Transport facilitiesUniversity provides transport facility to the students and staff of Jinnah Sindh Medical University with a fleet of buses. Annually renewable transport cards are issued to students on subsidized rates. Buses are in excellent condition and students prefer college transport over public transport for safety and comfort.

Co-Curricular ActivitiesCo- curricular activities are an import part of JSMU's academic year. Students of IPS are always at the forefront in organizing activities.

Industrial VisitsStudents of Pharm.D. visit various pharmaceutical companies and laboratories during their studies as a part of their practical / professional training and skill development.

Sports JSMU promotes various types of sports activities. It has sports teams for several indoor and outdoor sports like athletics, cricket, football, handball, table tennis, volleyball, etc. Students of Pharm. D are encouraged to take part in sports within the rules and regulations. The university students also take part in inter- and inter-universities sports competitions to gain national level exposure.

DebatesStudents also participate in debates and quiz competitions at national and provincial levels. Recently, they participated in an essay competition organized by HEC and Allama Iqbal Shield declamation contest at national level.

Other EventsStudents of Pharm.D won the first prize in the “Cooking Competition” last year. The senior batch organized “Welcome Convivial” for the new Pharm.D fellows.Students of Pharm. D participated in the “Inter-University Poster Competition.” Pharm. D students organized “Raddi Paper Campaign” for charity.

Clinical Training and Independent Pharmacy RoundsJPMC, NICH, AND NICVD are the teaching constituent of JSMU. Student of the fourth and the fifth Year practice their clinical courses in pharmaceutical services in these hospitals. The courses include In-patient pharmacy Out-Patient pharmacy Emergency room pharmacy Pharmacy ambulatory dispensing area Bulk pharmacy store Wards

This clinical practice enables the students to develop skills for effective interaction with patients in real life situations.

Career Opportunities in PharmacyPharmacy graduates have a wide choice of opportunities. Various fields are open for pharmacists based on individual interest, from health services to various pharmaceutical companies, business and scientific research organizations, teaching in universities, and hospital pharmacist practice. The system of examination at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Jinnah Sindh Medical University shall be based on semester system. The detailed rules and regulations are as follows.

1.1 ACADEMIC CALENDAR An academic year shall be divided into two semesters, each of 16 to 18 weeks duration.

1.2 TYPES OF EXAMINATIONSMIDTERM EXAMINATIONS Are conducted by Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences for theory papers. Candidates repeating the year have to score fresh Midterm Examination marks for the failed course

(s). Previous Midterm Examination marks shall be cancelled. Marks distribution for Midterm will be 30 marks

SEMESTER EXAMINATION Is conducted by Department of Examination, Jinnah Sindh Medical University. The examination schedule is prerogative of the University; no changes would be made once the

schedule is announced. Any query related to examination should be addressed to the Dean, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Controller of Examination.

Midterm Examination 30 Marks will be added to Terminal Examination 70 Marks obtained in that course for complete score.

1.4 ELIGIBILITY FOR SEMESTER EXAMINATION Minimum 75% attendance in each course is mandatory as per PCP criteria. Clearance of all University dues. Students who do not meet the attendance requirement for one or more than one course(s). He/She

will be considered as NOT ELIGIBLE student to appear in the semester exam of those courses.

1.5 PROMOTION RULESst rd th th nd th th thSemesters may be termed as ODD (1 , 3 , 5 , 7 , 9th) and EVEN (2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10th).

Grading

a. Numerical Grade (NG)Assessment of performance based on marks out of 100 fixed for a course of 3 or 4 credit hours unit is NG.

b. Alphabetical Grade (AG)Equivalent of numerical grades in terms of alphabets shall be termed as alphabetical grades. (Each letter carries a value in terms of numerical points).

c. Grading

d. Incomplete GradeNo point shall be given for incomplete courses.e. Grade Point Ratio (GPR)Points obtained in each course shall be multiplied by the number of Credit Hours specified for that course, and then a Grade Point Ratio (GPR) shall be calculated.

FormulaGrade points in a course = Credit Hours of the course X Grade point equivalent to the score given in the grade point tablef. Cumulative Grade Point Ratio (CGPR)This is obtained by adding all the Grade Points of the courses during the five years study period and dividing the total by the total number of credit hours.CGPR = Total Grade Point in all coursesTotal number of Credit Hours

Duration for Completion of DegreeThe IPS offers semester based (2 semesters / annum) Pharm.D program of five years duration. In this duration, students will complete 198 credit hours.Maximum duration for the completion of Pharm. D degree will be seven years. Fresh admission at the

stlevel of Pharm.D 1 Professional will be required after this period.

The five-year Pharm. D programme provides integrated education with dedicated teachers and industry practitioners, featuring new and established teaching and assessment methods, structured courses, and constant assimilation of new knowledge and ideas. The five-year Pharm.D. curriculum directs the attention of pharmacists towards the patients, training them to apply their education in the preparation, quality control, safety of medicinally active substances, their formulation, and the supply of quality medicine to the patients.

Admissions ProcedureThe candidates should: Fill the online application form the JSMU website and print out the auto-www.jsmu.edu.pk

generated receipt. Fill the original application forms without any overwriting. (You may use a photocopy for practice). Arrange and attach the documents and photographs in specific order in a file as advised in

application form. Apply for admission with attested copies of required documents (details are given in subsequent

pages) and a pay order worth Rs.1500/-. Submit the application to Admission Cell, Jinnah Sind Medical University before closing date. Keep

the receipt carefully.Original documents and required pay order and affidavit are mandatory at the time of admission/interview.

Admission Rules and Regulations The decision of the selection board will be final and cannot be challenged.The selection board may investigate any document and may call any candidate for that purpose.The selection board shall have the right to refuse admission to any candidate, who indulges in violence, uses abusive language, becomes insolent or misbehave with the members of the selection board.The selection board shall not consider any candidate for admission if he/she is found to be involved in any form of unfair means/fraud at any stage of admission/selection.Any candidate found using Domicile/PRC of more than one district/place in Pakistan will be disqualified for admission at JSMU, in any other medical institution of Sindh province and the case will be referred to the concerned authorities for investigations.

Categories of Seats for Pharm. D at Jinnah Sindh Medical UniversityAdmissions in Jinnah Sindh Medical University are given according to merit. Seventy percent seats are for open merit and 30 percent for self-finance admissions. Certain seats are reserved for students with Interior Sindh domicile.

Open Merit: (70 seats)Forty-nine (49) seats are reserved for Open Merit candidates with Karachi domicile who have studied Matric/'O' level and Inter/A level.Twenty-one (21) seats are reserved for Open Merit candidates with domiciles of interior Sindh who have studied Matric/O level and Inter/A level.

Self-Finance (UEDP local) (30 seats):Twenty-one (21) self-finance seats have been reserved for candidates with Karachi domicile who have studied Matric/O level and Inter/A level.Nine (09) self-finance seats are reserved for candidates with domiciles of interior Sindh who have studied Matric/O level and Inter/A level.

Please submit the required pay orders of admission fees and tuition fees of two semesters at the time of interview for verification of original documents.

Admission letter will not be issued without submission of pay orders.

10% increase in tuition fees of only Open Merit every year.
