IACP Pharmacy Practice Modules

About the Program

The Indian Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (IACP) registered under Sec 10 of the Tamilnadu Societies

Registration Act 1975 is a national organization whose mission is to serve its member colleges and their

respective faculties, by acting as their advocate at the national level, by providing forums for interaction and

exchange of information among its members, by recognizing outstanding performance among its member

educators and by assisting member colleges and schools in meeting their mission of educating and training

pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. The association provides leadership in advancing and enhancing

the quality of Pharmacy education and training in its member colleges. IACP also understands that academic

Pharmacy plays an important role and shares responsibility with the broader profession of Pharmacy.

With the advent of the introduction of the Pharm. D. program in India, Pharmacy educators and students

faced challenges in comprehending this new facet of Pharmacy education and Profession. To strengthen

these initiatives of the council and the educators, the Indian Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (IACP) had

come forward to provide leadership in this area by conducting advanced learning series in understanding

and providing Quality Pharmacy Practice. The IACP has conducted ten such modules and intends to conduct

more such lecture series in the next three years jointly with various stakeholders. The first ten modules have

been conducted successfully and based on the appreciation and request from the Pharm. D. students and

faculty, the modules were quite often repeated in various parts of the country and now the IACP is pleased to

present Pharmacy Practice – Advanced Learning Series – Module 4 (Repeat Module) with a focus on

“Infectious Diseases”

Globally, the pharmacy profession and education are undergoing unprecedented changes and the role of

the pharmacist, as a provider of healthcare services is increasingly recognized, valued and expanded. Many

countries are, however, faced with critical shortages of pharmacy workforce, other healthcare professionals

and workers. The World Health Organization has concluded that in many countries healthcare targets cannot

be realized until capacity is built in the healthcare system.

A primary focus in this regard, is the development of an adequate and appropriate healthcare workforce,

along with the academic and institutional infrastructure to deliver the required competency-based

education and training. Many countries are introducing, expanding or undertaking major reforms of

pharmacy education. Such developments must be accompanied by robust systems to assure the quality of

the educational structures, processes and outcomes; the later primarily being graduates who are competent

and capable of performing safely and effectively in their practice setting and contributing to the delivery of

healthcare.

The Pharmacy Council of India is of firm opinion that introduction of Pharm. D. program with emphasis on

clinical practice, is the need of the hour and is in line with the proclivity in health care standards in this

challenging scenario. The mission of Pharm. D. program is to attune the relation between safe usage of

medication and optimal health benefits. For this mission to be achieved we need caring, competent, ethical

pharmacists who are able to think critically and creatively to identify and resolve the health and medication

related problems by taking responsibilities for managing systems and practices that contribute to the

design, implementation and monitoring of rational pharmacotherapy to effectuate the defined therapeutic

goals with optimal safety and health outcomes.

With an intense intent to strengthen the professional competencies of Indian Pharmacists in healthcare

delivery settings, Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) with the approval of the Ministry of Health and Family

Welfare, Government of India has introduced six year Pharm. D. program in 2008 for entry level pharmacy

students and a three year Post-Baccalaureate Pharm. D. for the working professionals with Bachelor of

Pharmacy degrees through Pharm. D. Regulations, 2008 as notified in the Gazette of India.

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Services were brought into the spotlight of US health care

system, thanks in large part to the Medicare Modernization and Improvement Act of 2003. With this

law, US largest payer of health care services, the United States Government, has recognized the

importance of a set of services that are believed are best provided by the health care system's

expert in medications, the Pharmacist. Medication Therapy Management under the Medicare

prescription drug benefit is certainly a major opportunity for pharmacists to receive payment for

monitoring and improving medication use in patients with complex regimens. Yet, it is only one of

many likely to arise as the health care system continues to see the benefit of appropriately

managed medications. Pharmacists, everywhere have a great opportunity to improve public health,

especially among patients with multiple disease states and complex medication regimens, through

better medication therapy management.
