Cashew Tree

• Height and span of 4 to 5 meters

• Yields 3 to 6 kilo of nuts• Yield of nuts is about 260 kilos

per acre. • The nuts are attached to the

fruits. The collector plucks the fruit and the nuts separately.

Eatable Cashew

• Eatable Cashew comes in different grades based generally on color and size.

• The Colors are classified into White and Scorched White.

• The Size is usually determined by the count of cashews in a pound, the lower the count the larger the nut and of course pricier.

• The commodity is exported world wide, USA being the largest buyer.

Cashew Shell

• The cashew shells that are obtained are inedible.

• They ooze out a inedible oil slowly which is usually dark brownish in color.

• Caution is required while handling this oozing out liquid.

CNSL

• The oil extracted from shells is called cashew shell oil or cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL)

• CNSL content in the shell is about 20-23%.

• The oil extracted should satisfy the ISI 840 (1964 amended) specification and US 3M Co.’s

• CNSL is water repellent and has phenolic structure.

Resin

• CNSL is very slow-drying vegetable oil.

• It requires treatment to make it usable in various products.

• When treated with certain Aldehydes and Amines, it forms resins that could be used in paints, brake linings, water proofing and inks etc.

Cardanol

• The CNSL gives Cardanol on distillation

• It has a phenolic structure• Used with additional values in

areas of specialization of high-end engineering

Residol

• The residual part produced on distillation of CNSL is called Residol.

• It has Phenolic structure• It is used with added values in

cheaper paints and friction dust

De-oiled Cake

• The leftover shells after the oil extraction is called De-oiled cake.

• This is still inedible as very minute quantities of oil may still be retained in the cake.

• This is usually used to create briquettes
