Term 1 Week 6A
Monday 4 March 2019
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
We are always working toward improved communication and
maintaining a positive environment for students, staff and parents
at Kiama High School. The NSW Department of Education’s
School Community Charter outlines the responsibilities of
parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public
schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative,
supportive and cohesive. Please see a copy of the document on
page nine and ten in this newsletter.
In order to learn more about what our school community wants, we are continuing to
implement the Tell Them From Me Survey in 2019. The student survey will run in
Term 1 from Weeks 7 to Week 11. The parent, teacher and optional second student
survey will run in Term 3.
I expected that someone would call me and let me know of the error I made in the
last newsletter. I did not complete the sentence about Raina Lawton. It should have
read that Raina, along with seven other students are currently completing their Gold
Duke of Edinburgh. This is certainly amazing and I thank the coordinators Kimberley
Cutting and Mitchell Grove for running the scheme.
Another way we encourage Excellence is to run our senior Striving for Excellence
Days at the Pavilion. Years 11 and 12 are provided with the opportunity to improve
their study skills, hear from faculty experts and learn up to date information about
transition to careers. Thanks to Judith McLaughlin for organising these valuable
days. I visited both sessions and was pleased to see students highly engaged in the
sessions.
Catherine Glover,
Principal
The next P & C Meeting is on Monday 11
March 2019, 6.30pm with guest speaker
from Youth Adolescent Mental Health
Services followed by the regular meeting
at 7.00pm.

YEAR 11 S&S ART WORKSHOP
On Monday 25 February the Year 11 Visual Arts students engaged in a full-day
incursion exploring new artmaking techniques. Run by Leona from S&S Art Supplies,
the sessions investigated new materials, mixed media techniques and high quality
papers. Students worked through a series of stations, creating Gelli-prints, charcoal,
graphite, Gel-pen and Copic Marker drawings and mixed media works.
This was a wonderful opportunity for the groups to explore new medias, extend their
material proficiency and begin brainstorming ideas for their major practical task this
term.
In Term One, students are asked to make a large-scale, mixed media work, inspired
by the artmaking of Australian artist, Margaret Woodward. We look forward to seeing
the work created by Year 11 and the way in which the S&S Art Workshop influences
their practice.

CANTEEN ROSTER
CONGRATULATIONS TO 3 FORMER KHS STUDENTS
As students poured out of The Great Hall at the University of Sydney, few in the crowd would have realised three graduates were taking the final steps in a shared journey 20 years in the making. Kiama raised, Ann Lee, Gary Louie and Haisley Formosa, all completed Kindergarten through to Year 12 together, they were part of Kiama High School’s graduating class of 2011.
The trio then went on to complete undergraduate bachelor degrees in Sydney, before being accepted into medicine at the University of Sydney. In December they completed the four year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, graduating as doctors.
“The three of us were friends from primary school through to high school, and it's been wonderful having each other over the last four years, and an honour to graduate alongside each other,” Miss Formosa said.
The three recently started their placements as junior doctors, which will be ongoing for the next two years.
Ann Lee, 25, has taken a position at Wollongong Hospital, which will see her make the move back to Kiama after seven years living in the city.
She said her fondest memories from school were from her senior years. “I was very lucky to have such a great group of friends and fantastic teachers. Everyone was really supportive and encouraging, and we just had a lot of fun too,” she said. “I loved living in Kiama and being able to head down to the beach or a mate’s place after school and on weekends.
“Medicine is really interesting and it’s amazing how by understanding the human body and various pathologies, you can manage and treat people and improve their lives so much. “I’m pretty interested in critical care and leaning more towards anaesthetics at this stage.”

Gary Louie, 24, who is an intern at St George Hospital, shared Miss Lee’s sentiments, saying his fondest memories of high school were from his senior years.
“Of course, the Higher School Certificate is a difficult time for students, but it was rewarding to see all that hard work finally pay off,” he said. “It was made easier as there was a bit of friendly competition between the students to do well, as well as the support from the staff of Kiama High School.
Haisley Formosa, 25, will call the Central Coast home for the interim, recently commencing work at Gosford Hospital. She credited the Kiama teachers and a close-knit cohort with providing the platform to do her best in the HSC.
“I think we all took on the mentality that we learn best by teaching each other and so we fostered a great environment to learn and ask questions without being judged,” she said.
“Medicine is a career in which learning never stops, so I look forward to continuing my education, with the hopes of commencing the training pathway to become a general practitioner in the future,” she said.
AIME FESTIVAL OF MENTORING
On Monday ten Aboriginal students, from
across all years at Kiama High School,
attended a wonderful day of celebration
and fun at Wollongong University.
Aboriginal students from across the area danced and played percussion alongside mentors from across the world. They shared food and ideas. Students were inspired to create their own stories and will use film to capture these ideas. The day also was a way to teach International mentors how to work with young people.
Taylor-Lee Byrne, Year 12 really enjoyed
the day. She said that it was great to see how the program can impact everyone, not
just on us but globally. She loved being able to speak to people from all over the
world about their culture and to share Aboriginal culture with them.
WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE
Kiama High will again be shaving to raise money for leukaemia. Several students
have signed up to the school team and we are looking for more students who would
like to participate. Permission notes are required. Interested students should pick up
a note from Mrs Littrich in E1 and will then be signed up to Kiama High’s Team.
To sponsor, you can go to https://worldsgreatestshave.com/, look for the “Sponsor”
button and look for the Kiama High School Team.
The shave will take place Wednesday 13 March at lunch in the quad. Parents and
supporters are invited to attend.

SYDNEY THUNDER MUTLICULTURAL CUP TEAM VISIT
Sydney Thunder Multicultural Cup team members Hameed Kherkah and Nazir Shinwari visited Kiama High this week. Over 70 interested students listened to Hameed and Nazir share their love of cricket and the impact cricket has had on their lives. They shared inspirational stories of their journey from Afghanistan to Australia to currently play for the Sydney Thunder Multicultural Cup team. The students asked questions of the players before heading to the oval to join the players in games of cricket. Thanks to past student Jenna Purcell, Participation Officer - Southern NSW/ACT (Wollongong) Cricket NSW, for the offer to present to our students.
VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Kiama High School played host to the Zone Volleyball Championships during Weeks
3 & 4. The round robin tournament saw some highly skilled and thrilling
performances. Many KHS students were lucky enough to watch some of the action
during their lunch break.
Only the top two ranked teams from the boys and girls division progress to the
Regional Finals. Congratulations to both the KHS Open Boys and Open Girls teams
for securing their place in this tournament to be held later in Term 1.
