THE ENSEMBLE THEATREInfluenced by the African American Theatre movement of the 1960s and 70s, George Hawkins founded a black theatre company in 1976 in Houston, Texas. He observed that professional roles were few and far between for black actors, and his frustration led him to create his own company, then known as The Black Ensemble Company. Hawkins’ goal was to create a theatre that would provide diverse roles for black artists.
Determined to move his theatre in a direction different from other mainstream theatres, Hawkins focused on themes about black life. He located a building to use as a storefront theatre on Tuam Street, and renamed the company The Ensemble Theatre.
In 1985, the theatre moved to Main Street and grew each year thereafter. Hawkins continued his goal to establish a ‘place and space’ where artists and the larger community could receive technical training and have expanded employment opportunities while providing a theatrical education for Houstonians and residents in surrounding counties. In the years that followed, The Ensemble played the role of social liaison between the Houston community and the black theatre experience. George Hawkins passed away in 1990 but his dream, drive, and passion continue under superb leadership and community support.
The Ensemble Theatre is one of a few professional theaters in the region dedicated to the production of works portraying the African American experience. It is the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest and it holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s largest African American theatres owning and operating its facility and producing in-house. Board President Emeritus Audrey Lawson led the capital campaign for The Ensemble’s $4.5 million building renovations that concluded in 1997.
The programs and operations of The Ensemble Theatre benefit a multicultural audience that is diverse in age, income, ethnicity, and culture. The Ensemble Theatre produces a Mainstage Season of contemporary and classical works devoted to the portrayal of the African American experience by local and national playwrights and artists. The Ensemble Theatre’s Performing Arts Education program provides educational workshops, artist-in-residence experiences, and live performances for students both off-site and at the theatre. Also, the Young Performers Program offers intensive summer training for youth ages 6 to 17 encompassing instruction in all disciplines of the theatre arts. Through its varied programs, The Ensemble Theatre benefits an audience and artistic constituency of over 65,000 people annually.
The Ensemble Theatre has surpassed the vision of its founder and continues to expand and create innovative programs to bring African American theatre to a myriad of audiences, and is truly one of Houston’s finest historical cultural institutions.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHTAs an accomplished Writer, Producer and Director, Cliff Roquemore has made many contributions to the art of film, television and stage. As a Producer for film, Cliff’s credits include United Artists’ Penitentiary II, Generation International’s Disco Godfather and the John Garfield Classic, Body and Soul for Cannon Films. Cliff made his directorial debut for film in 1975 with the still to date popular, cult classic, The Human Tornado starring the legendary Rudy Ray Moore, aka “Dolemite.” Cliff moved on to write and direct several other films with “Dolemite” such as Petey
Wheatstraw – The Devil’s Son-In-Law and Rudy Ray Moore – Live in Concert. Cliff Roquemore’s biggest accomplishment for television was writing and staging the Christian Broadcasting Network’s (CBN) musical production of “Family Reunion” in which he was nominated for an Emmy Award.
Although film and television was his love, the theatre was his passion. Cliff wrote, produced and directed over two hundred (200) stage plays during his career. Honey, Ceremonies In Dark Old Men, Visions in Black, Daddy Goodness, the award winning Selma, Shaka Zulu, Invasion of Addis Ababa, Showgirls, Swann, The Nifty Fifties, and Color Me Dorothy: The Dorothy Dandridge Story, just to name a few. In 1989, he received two (2) NAACP Image Awards for Best Writer and Best Director for the hit musical, The Gospel Truth which won a total of seven (7) awards. Cliff was also honored to direct the one and only Eartha Kitt in her one-woman show performed at Nick Stewart’s historical Ebony Showcase Theatre in Los Angeles. Cliff Roquemore’s most successful stage play to date is entitled, LOTTO – Experience The Dream. LOTTO as it is most commonly referenced, ran successfully off-Broadway for two (2) years to capacity crowds and rave reviews at the Billie Holiday Theatre of Brooklyn, the historic Heckscher Theater, and the Union Square Theatre located in the village of Mid-Town Manhattan.
His final contribution to the show business industry was as Writer and Light Designer for the smash-hit musical, Dancin’ In The Streets – The Motown Revue by William “Mickey” Stevenson and Motown legend Smokey Robinson. Mr. Cliff Roquemore had a tremendous love for many art forms. He especially loved and had a passion for the art of “show-biz.”
He always said, “Let’s just do the show and make ‘em happy. After all, they paid.”
ABOUT THE ADAPTORBryan Roquemore has been a part of the show business industry since childhood, and as a result, he continues in present day to strive as a Writer, Director, and Actor for film, television and stage. At the age of six, Bryan “B-ROQ” Roquemore made his television debut in a local Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial in Detroit, Michigan. Fast forward to age ten, as he made his motion picture debut in the action comedy Petey Wheatstraw - The Devil’s Son-In-Law starring Rudy Ray Moore, a.k.a “Dolemite” and written/directed by father, the late Cliff Roquemore. Some of his other film credits
as an actor include The Sands of Time starring Vanessa L. Williams, Sinbad and Paul Winfield, as well as such noted independent films Snuffing Cinderella, Young Boys, Joy’s Tenet, and Let Clay Be Clay.
Bryan began writing for the stage during his tenure at the historic Fisk University where he received a B.A. in Dramatics and Speech. After performing, writing, producing and directing several stage shows which played to rave reviews throughout the southern college circuit, he moved to New York City and made his Off-Broadway debut as “Junebug” in the hilarious family comedy LOTTO - Experience The Dream. He also played the role of “Peyton” in the Off-Broadway run of the award winning Run Wild. Some of his other stage credits as an actor include Dazed and Beyond, Happy Ending, Day of Absence, A Raisin in the Sun, the NAACP Theatre Award nominated For Black Boys… for Best Ensemble, and the critically acclaimed, Miss Evers’ Boys which received nine local C.O.L.S.A.C. theatre nominations, one in which Bryan won for Best Supporting Actor. Bryan has now shifted his experience and perseverance towards the art of directing. After experiencing the show business industry before going away to study, it not only gave him a solid foundation for the industry, but it also provided him with the ability to adapt to the show business industry as it stands today.
Bryan continues to write original scripts for film, television and stage. Some of his latest screenplays include LOTTO Fever, the film adaptation of LOTTO – Experience The Dream, The Return of Petey Wheatstraw, Quest U, Illicit, and Slammin’ Granny’s. The torch has been passed from father to son, and through the Grace of the one and only LORD JESUS CHRIST, Bryan “B-ROq” Roquemore is more than ready and equipped for “show-biz.”

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTESLOTTO - Experience The Dream was originally written in 1989 with the concept in mind to play the stage, and then on to the big screen as a feature film, and then
television as a sitcom. Written by esteemed playwright Cliff Roquemore, this piece was literally intended to bring good, wholesome laughter to the masses. “It’s time for the world to laugh more,” Cliff would so often state, and that was his motivation to write Lotto. In addition, he also wanted to show the world that the strength behind having LOVE for family values and structure supersedes all! I, Bryan Roquemore, dedicate this adaptation of LOTTO - Experience The Dream to my dear father, Cliff Roquemore. “Here we go again, Dad, and I pray that you are resting in peace!”
ABOUT THE DIRECTOREileen J. Morris is a director, actress and educator. She worked closely with the founder of The Ensemble Theatre, George W. Hawkins, from 1982 until his death in 1990. She has served on several boards and panels during her 30 years as an artist and has held the offices of president, immediate past president, vice-president and secretary with the national organization, Black Theatre Network from 1994–2004. She currently serves on the board of The Midtown Management District. She has served on panels with the Cultural Arts
Council of Houston, Harris County; Pennsylvania Council on the Arts; the Heinz Foundation; the Multi-Cultural Arts Council of Pittsburgh; Pittsburgh Foundation High School Arts Scholarship Committee; Pro Arts; the National Endowment for the Arts, and Theatre Communications Group.
As artistic director, she has produced over 78 productions, which include four world premieres and 57 regional premieres. In 2007, The Ensemble Theatre was named Best Theatre by the Houston Press and 2007 Best Showcase for African American Actors by the Ultimate Section of the Houston Chronicle. The Ensemble Theatre also presented two out of the 10 best plays named by the Houston Chronicle as the Best of Houston Theatre 2008. Eileen, along with Audrey Lawson, president emeritus, was instrumental in initiating the Young Performers’ program an educational training program for youth ages 6 to 17 that addresses the collaboration of art and life skills. Some of her Ensemble Theatre directing credits include Jitney,The Waiting Room, Stick Fly (Named one of the top 2010 plays –Houston Chronicle), American Menu (2010 Giorgee Award winner for Best Ensemble and named one of the top 2010 plays–Houston Chronicle), Seven Guitars (Named one of the top 2009 plays–Houston Chronicle) The Man Who Saved New Orleans, Radio Golf, Ashes to Africa, Christmas is Comin’ Uptown, Sty of the Blind Pig (Giorgee Award winner for Best Production in 2008) and Blue. She has a strong history with Kuntu Repertory Theatre where she directed several productions which included, Liftin’, Flyin’ West, Miss Dessa, A Love Song for Mumia, Murderer on the Hill District; with Pittsburgh Playwright’s Theatre- King Hedley and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (received honorable mention from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette for Best Play), Fences (Best Director from the African American Council on the Arts in 2005), Joe Turner’s
Come and Gone (received one of the Best Director mentions from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette), Jonathan, August in February 2003-2005 and several other plays. At the New Horizon Theatre company in Pittsburgh, Eileen has directed I Gotcha, The Joe Tex Story, Livin’ Fat, American Menu, Crumbs From the Table of Joy, The Dance on Widow’s Row, Blue (received the African American Council on the Arts Onyx Award for Best Director- 2004), Dancing on Moonlight and a few others. Also in Pittsburgh she directed City Theatre’s special A Black History Celebration featuring film and television actress, Irma P. Hall. Last year she directed the Alley Theatre’s touring production of I, Barbara Jordan by Celeste Bedford Walker.
Eileen holds the distinct privilege of being the only African American women in the country to have directed eight plays of the August Wilson 10 play cycle. Recently, Eileen was honored at the National Black Theatre Festival with the 2011 Larry Leon Hamlin Producer Award.
DIRECTOR’S NOTESBeing raised both Catholic and Creole, dreaming of the “impossible” while also expecting the unexpected have always been a part of my life. We grew up playing card games on the 45 to 1 hour bus ride that the Kankakee girls had to take in their green and white striped uniform as they travelled first to St. Patrick’s Academy, and then to Bishop McNamara High School. We played games like tuck, to bid whist to spades. It didn’t matter who won or lost, but that we passed the time together, enjoying each other’s company.
During summers my family would visit Houston from Illinois and watch with awe the ease and confidence displayed by our maternal grandfather as he played poker, or our maternal grandmother as she gathered us to go and play bingo at church (we were able to play along with her then). And in later years as I watched my mother gain pleasure out of going to the bingo halls, and hosting poker parties. I come from a family of “gamers”, and remember warmly the time spent playing those games during family gatherings.
In the early 90’s, I had a wonderful phone conversation with playwright Cliff Roquemore. I had called to learn more about this play that I kept hearing so much about, entitled Lotto: Experience the Dream. When I visited Los Angeles shortly after that for us to meet in person, he (Cliff Roquemore) introduced me to the now famous Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. Being Creole, I couldn’t imagine that type of combination. Chicken was for gumbo and waffles were a breakfast food. But I enjoyed every morsel of that dish, as well as delightful conversation about art, creativity and family. From there, The Ensemble Theatre was able to first produce Lotto in 1994, and even though Cliff Roquemore has made his transition, the theatre now enjoys a relationship with his son, Bryan who carries the tradition of his father in a warm, caring and passionate way.
We are so blessed at The Ensemble Theatre to develop and maintain relationships that continue to strengthen who we are as a people, what our goals and objectives are as a theatre, and what our purpose is in terms of building community. George Hawkins, Ensemble founder had a dream that we all still believe in to this day and the Benson family in Lotto have a dream. The lesson becomes how does one deal with the day to day challenges and opportunities that just living brings about.
But I guess what I get most out of this play, Lotto: Experience the Dream, is what my childhood taught me… the real motivation for the bid whist, tuck, poker games and bingo—spending time with family and loved ones. That was the ultimate activity. Enjoying life, sharing laughter, wanting the best for each other, loving for as long as you can and as much as you can. “Experiencing the Dream” means recognizing that the dream lives within each of us and that the most important part of the dream is having a ‘family’ to share it with. Whether that family be blood related or as we acknowledge here at The Ensemble Theatre – our chosen ‘theatre family,’ those family bonds help to enrich our lives. As you watch this play, be mindful of what ultimately matters most to these characters-Family and Love.

Derrick Brent II (Spike) discovered his love for acting, creation and artistic expression in “the only place that Mama let him”… the church. He later went on to graduate with his B.A. in Theatre Arts from Prairie View A&M University. Derrick has been blessed to experience the stage in several theatre productions around the U.S. A few of those roles were Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Dead Man Walking with the
Houston Grand Opera, Pastor Tim Osbourne in The Women of Strong Hope with Emerge Theatre Group, and as Progress Man in Peaches with Progress Theatre Company. Being an actor is the greatest gift of service given him from the inside out.
Jason E. Carmichael (Horace Benson) makes his Ensemble Theatre debut in Lotto. Raised in Houston, Jason returns home after living in Los Angeles for 20 years. Upon receiving his BFA in theatre from Howard University, he headed out west where he appeared on both the big and small screens in Caught Up, NYPD Blue, Snoops, and Once and Again to name a few. However, his love affair with the stage started as a child and continues to grow stronger every day.
Mr. Carmichael has taken on the title role in Othello twice, played Prince Don Pedro in Much Ado about Nothing, King Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet, all for the California Shakespeare Company. Other favorite productions include The Colored Museum, A Soldier’s Play, God’s Trombones, and Tamerlano where he shared the stage with Placido Domingo during the 2010 season of the Los Angeles Opera. For the past 10 years, Jason has taught Shakespeare and English for the Los Angeles Unified School District, Hollywood Arts Council, and L.A. Cultural Affairs Department. Mr. Carmichael is passionate about passing on his love of language and the arts to the next generation. He is honored to be part of the 35th season of The Ensemble and dedicates this performance to his family.
Henry Edwards Jr. (Blaze) is in his 17th season with The Ensemble. He was last seen in Jitney, The Wiz, Radio Golf and other productions such as Fences, Get Ready, Bourbon at the Border, The Old Settler, Pure Gospel Christmas, Complete Works Of Shakespeare, Black Nativity, Dance on Widow’s Row and Before it Hits Home to name a few. “I dedicate this performance to every man, woman and child who takes time to embrace theatre. Allowing me to give
to you what my father has given to me as a gift. Thanks Daddy!”
Michelle Harper (Nett) is a native Houstonian that returned home after receiving her B.F.A from Howard University. Most recently she starred in Woody Allen’s hilarious comedies, God and Death with The Back Porch Players. She has starred in The Ensemble Theatre’s productions of Jitney as Rena and Gee’s Bend as the strong willed Sadie. She has also toured around the city with The Ensemble Theatre’s Touring Company. Michelle has also worked
with the Driven Theatre Company in Fragmentation and Fragmentation II, which showcased the works of young playwrights. You may also remember her from The Theatre Southwest’s skin crawling production of Bug as R.C. Michelle hopes you enjoy the show!
Brian Jones (Seth Goldberg) is thrilled to be making his Ensemble Theatre debut. Standout accomplishments include: “Bingo Host” in Upstage Theatre‘s 2010 Festival of Comedy unofficial winner BINGO!, “Dennis Shepard” in Holocaust Museum Houston’s The Laramie Project, A small role in the award-winning independent film Soul Searching, “Cat” in The Strand Theater’s Honk, The Musical, and “The Beast” in Disney’s Beauty and The Beast at
Harbour Playhouse.
Broderick “Brod J” Jones (Lester) is a gifted actor, director, stage manager, and playwright. He is a native Houstonian and long-time member of the Houston theatre community. Brod J. was last seen in Jitney. He was also in The Waiting Room, which was selected to showcase at the 2011 National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He has performed in several other Ensemble Theatre mainstage shows including Seven Guitars, Radio Golf,
Man Who Saved New Orleans, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Get Ready, Sparkle, In Walks Ed, Sundown Names Nightgone Thangs, That Serious He-Man Ball, The Piano Lesson, Gospel at Colonus, Black Nativity, Harlem After Hours, Christmas Up In Harlem and Ashes to Africa. He was a principle character in several touring gospel productions such as Laura Mae, Lord Have Mercy and The Streets Can’t Have My Boys, both produced by the Master Theatre Company, as well as a principal actor and director of the gospel production, When Mama Prays, by J.P. Productions. In addition, he has performed in the Alley Theatre’s touring production of I, Barbara Jordan, and as “The Ghost of Christmas Past” in their production of A Christmas Carol. He is an Encore Theatre Hall of Fame member, where he’s portrayed diverse characters such as Shakespeare’s Othello and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. He has received many accolades including U.I.L, and A.C.T.F Best Actor Awards and he is a recipient of The Ensemble Theatre’s Giorgee Award for Best Actor for his role in Seven Guitars.
Robert Marshall (Nick) is proud and honored as always to perform at The Ensemble Theatre. He previously resided in Los Angeles pursuing film, television, and commercial work. His numerous theatrical credits include Jitney, Stick Fly, Black Eagles, Christmas is Comin’ Uptown, and Blues for an Alabama Sky, all produced at The Ensemble Theatre. “And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13. He
dedicates this performance to his family, friends, and children, Brooke and Myles.
Joseph “JoeP” Palmore (J.R.), a native Houstonian, earned a degree in Mass Communications – Radio/TV/Theatre/Film at Clark Atlanta University. JoeP is a veteran with the Ensemble Theatre and has performed in numerous plays including Livin’ Fat, Ashes to Africa, Br’er Rabbit, John Henry, The Man Who Saved New Orleans (Best Actor – Giorgee Award nomination), and Jitney (Best Supporting Actor - Giorgee Award nomination).
Outside of Houston, JoeP has had principal roles in Black Voices: A Sistah’s Life, which was performed at the National Black Theater Festival, and For Colored Boys, among others. Since, JoeP co-founded the Black Box Theatre Group (BBTG), he has produced and starred in TopDog/UnderDog and The Wager. With his first venture as a playwright, he wrote Love, Pain, Passion, Progress: A Poe-A-Trical Life Story for BBTG’s original production series. Learn more about JoeP and his upcoming ventures, including co-hosting alongside poet Se7en for Poetry Lounge Sundays, Houston’s longest running poetry showcase, at www.iamjoep.com. As a multi-faceted entertainer, “I thank God for the gift of performing, my father for being my inspiration, my mother for giving me my passion to perform, and my younger brother for the courage to do whatever I put my mind to.” JoeP dedicates all his performances to his late grandmother, Ruthie Mae Palmore, the biggest fan he’s ever had. “You said I could, before I even knew I would, so now I hope you’re proud of what I’ve done so far, and will continue to be with me in each show until im a star! You did good. Love you.”
Detria Marie Ward (Pearl) is a native Houstonian and B.F.A. theatre graduate of Texas Southern University. She is a member of St. Luke Evangelist Episcopal Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. After 15 years of dedicated service with KTSU’s 90.9FM, Detria accepted the request to be general manager of Matthew Knowles, CEO of Music World Entertainment Management (and home of Beyonce’ and Destiny’s Child) where she remained until 2004. She
was associate producer of the musical touring stage play, Will a Real Man Please Stand Up starring Johnny Gill, Sean Lavert, Michelle Williams and Malik Yoba. Detria was last seen on The Ensemble stage as “Cookie” in The Waiting Room that was also selected to showcase at the 2011 National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She was a member of the cast of the 2011 TSU Honors performance
at the Wortham Center. Detria will be directing The Amen Corner this coming November at her alma mater, Texas Southern University. As an actress, Detria’s stage performances include, American Menu, Constant Star, Blue, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery, East Texas Hot Links, Day Trips, Brown Silk and Magenta Sunsets. She is the proud four-time recipient of the prestigious Giorgee Award; recently for Best Ensemble for American Menu. She is the Host of Bace Productions’, Dancin’ in the Streets…Motown and More Revue. Always excited to be on the stage, she gives credit for all her talents to God!
Shirley Marks Whitmore (Mildred) actress/writer/director and avid genealogical researcher, has worked as an artist in the Houston area for many years. Whitmore has received critical recognition for her performances in many Ensemble Theatre productions including American Menu, Blue, Waiting to Be Invited, Day Trips, Before It Hits Home, The River Niger, Distant Voices, Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery and many more. Shirley with husband Clarence Whitmore,
produce and direct Dancin’ in the Street...Motown & More Revue annually at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Shirley has directed the works of Houston playwrights Celeste Bedford Walker, Thomas Meloncon and Larry Hunter.
ABOUT THE UNDERSTUDYRodney White (Blaze/Lester) is thrilled to return to The Ensemble Theatre. His previous performances at The Ensemble include children’s plays and The Ensemble’s main stage reading as ‘’Dakobi’’ in A Wreath for Udomo. Rodney had a critically-acclaimed role as ‘’Scrooge’’ in A Queer Carol at Unhinged Theatre Productions and also starred as ‘’Shaun Baldwin’’ in Deal With It! at His Feet Productions. Rodney’s passion for the theatre has been his heart’s
true calling. He began his studies in acting at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, TX, and continued his acting education under Artistic Director, Walter Dallas at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Rodney would like to extend his many thanks to Walter Dallas and family and friends for their love and support.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION STAFF
David McTier (Dramaturg) is Associate Professor of Theatre at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, where he directs and teaches theatre history, dramatic theory and criticism, and dramaturgy. Raised on a cattle farm in rural Georgia, he holds a Ph.D. in theatre history and criticism from the University of Texas. During the past twenty years, he has taught on the faculties of the University of Kentucky, the University of Virginia at Wise,
the University of Vermont, Agnes Scott College, Rockhurst University, and Young Harris College.
Named to Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, he was awarded a Kennedy Center Faculty Fellowship in 2004 to the National Critics Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, and he returned to the O’Neill in 2010 for the National Puppetry Conference. Dr. McTier recently was named a 2012 Fulbright Scholar to the University of Prishtina in Kosovo, where he will teach dramatic theory and criticism as well as directing.
During the past two seasons at The Ensemble, Dr. McTier has served as dramaturg for Stick Fly and Cinderella, and he is delighted to return for LOTTO.
Bessie Williams (Costume Designer) a native of Southaven, MS, “Ann” is finally realizing one of her dreams of costume designing for mainstage. For years she developed her craft by sewing and designing for various church organizations and productions, dance and praise groups, proms, and weddings. She made Hattie McDaniel “taller” than life with her original designs for Hi-Hat Hattie. Other designer credits include: Redeem, The Amen
Corner, God’s Trombones, Git on Board, I Know I’ve Been Changed, The Spirit of Christmas Past, No Child and The Ensemble’s Young Performance Program. She is thankful that a veteran Ensemble actress saw her work and believed in her potential enough to introduce her to The Ensemble family. She is also grateful for this season of enlargement to her design territory. Bessie would like to thank her husband and children for their continuous support.
Eric Marsh (Lighting Design) is very excited to be back for his fourth season at The Ensemble Theatre. Other designs that Eric has done at The Ensemble are Blues in the Night, The Wiz, Five Guys Named Moe, Seven Guitars, Radio Golf, Blue, and The Waiting Room. Eric also designs for Main Street Theatre, Texas Repertory Theatre, and The John Copper School here in Houston
as well as in Oklahoma, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Montana and California. Eric is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Sam Houston State University. “I would like to thank my wife, Lisa, and my children, Camille and Mason for all of their patience and understanding.”
Page Warner (Property Design) has been working within the Houston Theatre community for the past eight years. She has worked for the Houston Ballet, The Shakespeare Festival, and Illuminations. Currently she works for Houston Community College and the Houston Grand Opera. This is her second production with The Ensemble Theatre.
James V. Thomas (Set Design) is a product of Prairie View A & M University where he studied theatre technology. Since a young man he has been fascinated, passionate and inspired with the elements that go into scenic design. A native of Liberty, Missouri, his influence comes from artists like Dorothy Lee-his Jr. High School drama teacher who encouraged him to participate in every school production; Howard Jones who
worked with community theatre and raised the design style and panache; and folk artist Alleen Purlie, who used things in her yard such as tools, wood and nature to make art, because art was for everybody. These common individuals assisted him in becoming something different and exciting. When asked of James, ‘why do you design sets?’ he said, “I want people to come away with a sense of place and an element of surprise. Every place has its own emotional vibe that stimulates our emotional senses and perspective.” He has a 30 year history with The Ensemble Theatre as a scenic designer and has been the resident designer and technical consultant for over ten years. At The Ensemble, he has done scenic design for three world premiers and numerous regional premiers. He has won the Giorgee Awards for Best Set Design for Cinderella, The Waiting Room, The Wiz, Gem of the Ocean and Blues for an Alabama Sky to name a few. His designs have been seen locally at Main Street Theatre, Houston Community College Heinen Theatre, Express Theatre, Theatre under the Stars and Houston Grand Opera as well as at the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He has been a presenter with the National Institute of Theatre Technicians. He is currently technical director of the Fine Arts Department at Houston Community College, Central Campus. James’ art enriches life, finds the beauty within, and provides a personal connection for all.
Roenia S. Thompson (Hair/Makeup Design) is a native Houstonian and is in her third season as hair designer for The Ensemble Theatre. Her previous designs have been seen in The Waiting Room, Five Guys Named Moe, Christmas With Great Aunt, American Menu, Stick Fly, Gee’s Bend and most recently Jitney. Roenia is thankful to God for his blessings and the gift of Arts.
Tiffani T. Staten (Stage Manager) is a recent transplant from Atlanta, GA. Previously, she served The Ensemble Theatre as the Stage Manager for Jitney, No Child, and the ASM for The Waiting Room and The African-American Shakespeare Company’s Cinderella. Through the years, she has served as production stage manager and assistant writer for The Soul Factory Theatre in Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, GA. She has also had the pleasure
of working as stage manager for the Gospel Channel’s special: Robert Townsend’s Musical Theatre of Hope. She has written short plays entitled; Bag Lady, Send in the Clowns, Jones Family Christmas (co-writer) and People Pleasers Anonymous. Tiffani is delighted to be a part of the LOTTO production team.
Adrian Washington (Sound Design) aka “A-dub”, is a Sound Designer, Recording Studio Owner / Live Engineer, Music Producer / Film Composer, and Musical Director, in his fifth season with The Ensemble he has combined all of his talents to become a five time Giorgee Award Winner. Some of his sound design works includes The Waiting Room (which was featured at this year’s National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, NC),
Seven Guitars, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Gem of the Ocean, Sty of the Blind Pig, Five Guys Named Moe, Constant Star, and the highly acclaimed musicals such as The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and Cinderella just to name a few. Adrian believes that today’s youth are our future so providing a safe and rich cultural environment is important. That’s why he puts just as much effort in his designs for The Ensemble’s Young Performers’ Program. His design for I, Barbara Jordan was also featured by The Alley Theatre’s touring department. His film score credits include Houston rapper Mike Jone’s movie American Dream, and just released A Gangland Love Story starring Regan Gomez and Gary Sturgis just to name a few.
Shaté Edwards (Choreographer), a native Houstonian, began dancing at an early age, and as a result, she has gained expertise in a variety of dance styles and has earned an extensive list of performance experience and credits. After graduating with honors from Spelman College, she began dancing professionally and has since trained under some
of the entertainment industry’s top choreographers in both Los Angeles and New York. Shaté recently returned from performing and teaching in Shanghai, China, and she continues to perform and choreograph for a variety of projects including concerts, plays, fashion shows, and special events. Through her work Shate’ hopes to leave her mark as an artist who entertains, educates, encourages, and inspires.
Leraldo Anzaldua (Fight Director) is happy to be returning to The Ensemble Theatre. Past Ensemble credits include Jitney, Gee’s Bend, Gem of the Ocean, Stick Fly, American Menu and Seven Guitars. He is an actor, fight director and Anime voiceover talent. Mr. Anzaldua has been an adjunct professor for movement and stage combat at the University of Houston School of Theatre
& Dance. Other fight director credits include: Alley Theatre, Hitchcock Blonde, Subject to Fits, Wait Until Dark, Black Comedy. Stages: Mr. Marmalade; Houston Grand Opera’s Rigoletto, Aida; Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival/ Foothill Theatre Company- Romeo and Juliet and Taming of the Shrew; Houston Shakespeare Festival: Cymbeline, Julius Caesar.
