A Mexican flag whirled through the mosh pit in front of the MacArthur Park stage, a small paviliion built in a depression overlooked by the Consulate General of the same country located on 6th street. The crowd filled the plaza and slopes facing the stage to see three bands spawned by the re-cent Mexican punk and ska move-ment.The headlining band, La Resisten-cia, sound mixed the thrashing of metal influenced hardcore punk with Operation Ivy-style high en-ergy ska, a Jamaican style which is grandfather to reggae music.

The front man, Luis Torres, de-livered lyrics in the rapid style of punk throughout much of the songs, but his vocals took a more deliberate pace during break-downs. The latter segments drew comparisons to the aggressive genre mashing of Rage Against The Machine, a rap metal band that gained popularity in the 90’s because of their high energy po-litical songs criticizing established political authorities.Torres said most of the South Gate’s sound was influenced by ska-core bands, who mix ska styles with hardcore punk, in par-ticular bands from Spain and add lyrics “about our struggles here, in America.”Red Store Bums, who played sec-ond, brought a traditional ska/reg-gae sound to the stage, with their

horn dominated songs running the gamut from the fast paced beat of the Skatalites to songs with a slow-er rhythm akin to Sublime or Bob Marley. The Inland Empire band said finding consistent musicians was the hardest part of creating ska music because the local scene is dominated by metal bands. The opening act, Profesor Galacti-co—a solo songwriter with a back-

ing band—, also performed ska music, but the songs were notably more pop-influenced than the later bands. The Professor, real name Nicolas Curiel, even covered the song Animal by Miike Snow. He found it ironic he covered the song because many fans thought Miike Snow was a solo artist and many of those familiar with his music think he’s a full band. The songwriter

confirmed he listened to many 80’s synth-pop bands and used popular music structures, which he held make the music more accessible to fans, as opposed to difficult to play music popular with fellow au-dio artists.“They’re easy on the ear,” Curiel said.

Students at Barack Obama Charter School Kicked-Off Year With New Backpacks, Books, & a Free HaircutSponsored by World Vision and The Molina Foundation, the event included a barbeque for 500.

Last week, students at Barack Obama Charter School (BOCS) in Los Angeles kicked-off the new school year with do-nated backpacks, books, and free haircuts. Up to 500 students received the donated back–to-school items at a barbeque event held on the school cam-pus (1726 E. 117th Street, Los Angeles, California, 90059), and sponsored by World Vision and The Mo-lina Foundation. “We are grate-ful for the support of our partners, World Vision and The Molina Foundation, who last year visited our school to provide students with much-needed sup-plies and infused them with enthusiasm for returning to school and increasing their reading skills,” said Glenn Noreen, Founder, President, and Chief Ex-

ecutive Officer of Ingenium Schools – a charter school management organization that provides high-quality instruction through a per-formance-based program to hundreds of students in some of Los Angeles’s most ethnically diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged communi-ties.Barack Obama Charter School (BOCS) is a high-performing elementary campus serving students from Compton, Lynwood, Los Angeles, Long Beach and surrounding communi-ties that uses the Ingenium Learning System (ILS) – a performance-based edu-cational program focus-ing on the needs of each child through a student-centered environment – to provide individualized in-struction to youth. The ILS model, which

utilizes continuous im-provement, shared vision, leadership and personal mastery as the foundation for its program, is based on the Re-Inventing Schools Coalition (RISC) program developed at Alaska’s Chugach School District. In 2001, the program won the Baldrige Award, the nation’s highest recog-nition for organizational performance excellence. Using the ILS, BOCS’s Academic Performance In-dex (API) score increased by 175 points during the 2011-2012 school year, a notable achievement. For more information about Barack Obama Charter School and In-genium Schools, visit our websites at BarackObam-aCharter.org and Ingeni-umSchools.org or Evelyn Aleman at 818.943.2481.

eral civil rights laws, and two decades of affirmative action programs. The racial polarization has been endemic between blacks and whites on everything from the George Zimmerman trial to just about ev-ery other controversial case that involves black and white perceptions of the work-ings of the criminal justice system.A half century later, the task of redeem-ing King’s dream means confronting the crises of family breakdown, the rash of shamefully failing public schools, ra-cial profiling, urban police violence, the obscene racial disparities in the prison and criminal justice system, and HIV/AIDS. These are beguiling problems that sledgehammer the black poor and these are the problems that King and the civil rights movement of his day only had begun to recognize and address. Civil rights leaders today also have to confront something else that King did not have to face. King had the sympathy and good-will of millions of whites, politicians, and business leaders in the peak years of the civil rights movement. Much of that good-will has vanished in the belief that blacks

have attained full equality. Then there’s the reality that race matters in America can no longer be framed ex-clusively in black and white. Latinos and Asians have become major players in the fight for political and economic em-powerment and figure big in the political strategies of Democratic and Republican presidential contenders. Today’s civil rights leaders will have to figure out ways to balance the competing and sometimes contradictory needs of these and other ethnic groups and patch them into a workable coalition for change. It’s grossly unfair to expect today’s civil rights leaders to be the charismatic, ag-gressive champions of, and martyrs for, civil rights that King was. Or to think that 50 years later, another March on Wash-ington can solve the seemingly intrac-table problems of the black poor. The times and circumstances have changed too much for that. Still, civil rights leaders can draw strength from King’s courage, vision and dedication and fight the hard-est they can against racial and economic injustices that have hardly disappeared. This is still a significant step toward re-deeming King’s dream.

NOTICE OF DIVIDED PUBLICATION OFTHE PROPERTY TAX DEFAULT

(DELINQUENT) LISTMade pursuant to Section 3371, Revenue and

Taxation Code

Pursuant to Sections 3381 through 3385, Revenue and Taxation Code, the Notice of Power to Sell Tax Defaulted Property in and for Los Angeles County, State of Califor-nia, has been divided and distributed to various newspa-pers of general circulation published in the County. A portion of the list appears in each of such newspapers.

I, Mark J. Saladino, County of Los Angeles Tax Collector, State of California, certify that:

Notice is hereby given that the real properties listed below were declared to be in tax default at 12:01 a.m. on July 1, 2011, by operation of law. The declaration of default was due to non-payment of the total amount due for the taxes, assessments, and other charges levied in 2010-2011 tax year that were a lien on the listed real property. Property upon which a nuisance abatement lien has been recorded and non-residential commercial property shall be subject to sale if the taxes remain unpaid after three years. If the 2010-2011 taxes remain unpaid after June 30, 2014, the property will be subject to sale at public auc-tion in 2015. All other property that remains unpaid after June 30, 2016, will be subject to sale at public auction in 2017. The name of the assessee and the total tax, which was due on June 30, 2011, for the 2010-11 tax year, is shown opposite the parcel number. Tax defaulted real property may be redeemed by payment of all unpaid taxes and assessments, together with the additional pen-alties and fees as prescribed by law, or it may be paid under an installment plan of redemption.

All information concerning redemption of tax-defaulted property will be furnished, upon request, by Mark J. Saladino, Treasurer and Tax Collector, 225 North Hill Street, Los Angeles, California 90012, 1(888) 807-2111 or 1(213) 974-2111.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in Los Angeles County and it claims the lives of more African Americans than all cancers combined. Stroke is the No. 2 killer affecting African Americans twice more than any other race. Heart disease, stroke and other cardio-vascular diseases are also the leading causes of death in the Latino community. The goal of the Health and Wellness Expo is to empower communities at high risk with the knowledge and tools to take charge of their health and live healthier lives, free of car-diovascular diseases.
