Objective: The children will celebrate a commissioningprayer service.Gospel: Jesus Gives Us a New Commandment (page 4, top)This week the Gospel is incorporated into a prayer service.Have someone read the direction under the title. Help thechildren locate the name tag, write their name on the linegiven, decorate the name tag, and cut it out. Assign a child tocollect all the name tags in a box or bowl. They will be used inthe prayer service. Ask the children what a commandment isand what commandments they know. They will probably knowthat there are ten commandments and be able to name them.Help them to understand that sometimes their parents,teachers, or other authorities give commands—stop at stopsigns, put your name here, don’t talk with your mouth full.After selecting readers, have all the children look over the Allparts and read them through so that they will be ready toparticipate. Also explain how the drawing names part willwork. It will be helpful to have the children seated in a circle sothat they are able to look at the person they will name.Complete the prayer service as given. Ask: What was Jesus’commandment to his friends? Then answer the first question.When we show love and care for others. Give the children timeto think of a response to the second question. Take time foreach to respond to that question.

Objective: The children will reflect on love as they haveexperienced it and as they might express it.Gospel Activity: Loving Actions Make Happy Stories (pages3-4, bottom) Read the directions to the children from the backof the name tags as each child follows along. After they havecut out the cards and before they fold them, discuss eachsituation as pictured. What is the problem here? How might itbe solved? Then fold up each bottom part and describe thesolution as given in the picture. Do this for each picture. Canthe children think of other possible loving actions for any of thesituations?

Prayer Conclude by saying together the last All part from theGospel Prayer Service. Lead the children in singing an Alleluiasong they all know.

Gospel Theme: Jesus shows ushow to love.The Gospel reading for today is Jesus’ new commandment—love one another. We are reminded of the Last Supper whenJesus told his friends that his new commandment for themwas to love one another the way they had seen him love them.The children reflect on a story of two brothers whichencourages them to think of how they are loved and how theycan express love for others.

Materials: Crayons or markers, scissors, markers for game.

Opening Prayer Gather in a prayer circle. Invite the childrento share any people or situations that worry them. Give eachchild a chance to speak but don’t let anyone dominate or taketoo long. Gather their concerns in this prayer.

Loving God, Jesus taught us that you love each of us verymuch. Please take care of the people and situations we worryabout. We trust you. Amen.

Objective: The children will share their own experiences oflove and friendship.Cover Activity: Jesus Asks Us to _ _ _ _ One AnotherMove to the work area and distribute Good News. Ask whatthe cover looks like. A board game. Read the headline at thebottom of the page and ask children to guess the missingword. Love. Then divide the group into pairs and read theinstructions at the top of the page aloud. Each pair needs onlyone game board and one marker. Have the pairs share theirfirst move with the whole group so you can see if everyone ison the right track. Then go around the room listening to thechildren’s sharing. If a pair finishes the game quickly, they canplay with the other person’s cover.

Objective: The children will recognize what love looks likein daily life.Cartoon Story: The Generous Brothers (pages 2-3) Directthe children to bring their copies of Good News to the storyarea. Read the story title together and ask them to explainwhat generous means. Let them find the two brothers in thefirst panel and guess from the drawings in the next two panelswhat the brothers do for a living. Then read the story aloudtogether. When you finish, ask the children to retell the storyto you. Use the questions to have the children realize thateach brother thought more about the other’s happiness thanhis own. What words describe their spirit? Generous, loving,unselfish, caring, brotherly, Christlike. Accept all answers.Conclude by asking how each brother would describe theother to a stranger.
