The winter issue of PFEW News detailed our first phase of preparations for the five 2016 summer sessions of Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week. Well, a lot has happened since then as the spring issue has now gone to press. In the intervening three months, and with a lot of help across the state, the staff is now preparing for what appears to be yet another record-setting class of students taking the PFEW “journey” this summer. Longtime readers will recall that two years ago, because of our meteoric growth, our Board of Directors approved the addition of a fifth session of PFEW in early August. Last year by mid-April, we had received 2,260 applications statewide from high school juniors and seniors hoping to be part of our world-class sessions. This year, by comparison, 2,420 students had submitted their applications by that same date, a whopping 7% increase in just one year! At this writing, we have now surpassed 3,000 applications for the five sessions and expect fully to eclipse last year’s number of 2,042 graduates by summer’s end. There are approximately 1,000 high schools in Pennsylvania when counting all public, parochial, charter, cyber, etc., etc. When you also take into account the Homeschoolers Association, there are approximately 230,000 eligible students in the 10th and 11th grades for PFEW participation. In order to “cover the ground”, we send voluminous packets to our more than 3,000 school contacts in every building across Pennsylvania in early November. The staff then embarks on a statewide campaign of visiting schools and doing in-class presentations to excite eligible students about the PFEW program, what it entails, and what its benefits are. Longtime Manager of Schools, Michelle Warofka (see promotion story on page 2) once again led these efforts assisted by her very capable Schools Assistant, Amber Goss. School visits began in earnest right after the New Year and by mid-April the schools’ team had visited 214 high schools and completed 815 in-class presentations throughout Pennsylvania’s sixty-seven counties. Aiding in these efforts were a number of our very loyal and effective “outside presenters” including: Nate Cooper, Ken Snyder, Patrick Kennedy, Sid Schechter, Gregory Drupp and Adam Kmett. To give you some perspective, a total of 101 new schools participated in nominating students and by mid-April we had received applications from schools in sixty-one counties, our highest number ever at that time of year. Achieving these kinds of numbers and exciting so many students to attend PFEW could never happen with just our staff and our very effective team of outside presenters. Kudos must go to the more than 3,000 school contacts (teachers, guidance counsellors, administrators) who know what an incredible educational opportunity this is for their students and who work so hard each year encouraging them to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Foundation Staff – Poised for the FutureFrom the President’s Corner

Managing a program that spans sixty-seven counties, engaging approximately 1,000 high schools and thousands of participating companies and individuals is a herculean task. Our very capable Vice President & COO, Karen

Musante, and I have the responsibility to oversee all operations throughout the state. The real reason for all of our successes, however, lies in the fact that we have the most dedicated and committed staff any nonprofit could ever hope for. In recent months we have made some major changes to our management staff and structure and we thought we would take this opportunity to share them with you. Now in her 15th year on staff, longtime Schools Manager Michelle Warofka has been promoted to the position of Vice President of Educational Relations, a title that is certainly more reflective of the broad ranging responsibilities she has throughout the state. Michelle now has primary responsibility for managing relations with nearly 1,000 high schools, as well as, coordinating more than 800 in-class presentations each year that has led to the explosive growth in student interest across the state. Many of you know and have worked with Jeremy Kropf who, until January, had been our Office Manager for the past eight years. What you may not know is that Jeremy had a lifelong dream of

serving on the mission field. He was able to realize that dream in January when he and his family were posted to a missionary compound in Cameroon, Africa where he will be serving as a youth pastor and teacher. We miss him but celebrate this realization of his lifelong dream. Joining the staff in December so she could overlap with Jeremy is our “new” Office Manager, Leslie Williams. As you will see from her bio, Leslie comes to us with a broad background in management and specifically nonprofit management. Like Jeremy, she has a wonderful servant personality and a smile that just lights up the room – you will enjoy getting to know her and working with her! Finally, we are pleased to announce the creation of a new position in the management structure of our Foundation. Longtime Company Advisor and president of Thomas Lee Printing & Mailing in Erie, Scott Lee recently sold his business thereby creating a unique opportunity for him and for us. We are very pleased to announce that he has accepted the position of Vice President of Marketing and Development for the Foundation. The creation of this position is a major component of our current Strategic Plan and Scott’s addition really positions us to better meet the Foundation’s growth and development needs for the future. We thought it would be appropriate to share with you a little about Michelle, Scott and Leslie in this issue of PFEW News. We are thrilled that these three outstanding professionals are part of the PFEW “family” and blessed to have them.

Ms. Michelle Warofka We are thrilled to announce the promotion of Ms. Michelle Warofka to Vice President of Educational Relations. Michelle joined the Foundation fifteen years ago during which time she held the position of Manager of Schools.

In December 2001 when Michelle first came to us, she brought with her enthusiasm and energy that

she has continued to use while leading our schools/student team. Her performance and leadership has been influential in the growth and expansion of PFEW over the last fifteen years.

In assuming her new role as Vice President of Educational Relations, Michelle will continue to oversee our relationships with the nearly 1,000 Pennsylvania schools. With more than 3,500 contacts in those schools, she also trains and supervises the efforts of our “outside contractors” who, along with her, now do an excess of 800 class presentations.

Ms. Leslie Williams We are pleased to welcome Ms. Leslie Williams to the PFEW family. In December of 2015, Lesl ie graciously accepted the position as PFEW’s Office Manager after Jeremy Kropf, who had been with the Foundation for eight years, relocated himself and his family to Cameroon, Africa for missionary work.

Leslie has always had a passion for non-profit and is thrilled to join our team. In the past, Leslie worked as Controller at Erie Independence House, Inc., an organization that specializes in working with disabled individuals. She also spent eight years as Vice President of Finance and Human Resources at Early Connections which provides educational programs and care for young children. Leslie also served as a Board member for the McDowell Marching Band Boosters and with ErieKIDS, a non-profit dedicated to teaching children about emotional intelligence.

“In school, I’m not very good with public speaking or social interaction. This program has allowed me to come out of my shell and not be afraid of telling people my ideas. The speakers have helped me find who I truly am and what I want to do with my life, but most importantly, my new friends have shown me that my thoughts and ideas are worth hearing and they care about what I have to say. When you come to PFEW, no one knows your story, what people think of

you in school, your home life, or anything about you. This gives you the chance to make new friends and memories with people who like you for you, not your story or how important, or unimportant, you are back in your hometown.

The PFEW experience allowed me to open my mind to the business world and help me realize I enjoy marketing, advertising, and working on a team. I believe every student should have this one-of-a-kind opportunity. I can’t believe how much I have learned about, not only business, but myself in just one week. I would like to thank Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week for allowing me to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I hope they can continue to change other students’ lives, just like mine.”

Alumni SpotlightA native of North East, PA, Leslie grew up on a grape farm. She has two children who are the apples of her eye. Son, Devon (20), who is working toward obtaining his commercial pilot license and daughter, Gianna (15), who is a sophomore at McDowell High School and member the McDowell JRAFROTC program, marching band and will be attending PFEW 2016 Week II this summer.

In her spare time, she enjoys her book club, cycling and every day rain or shine you can find her walking/birdwatching in the woods, local park trails or beachcombing along Lake Erie.

Mr. Scott Lee We are pleased to welcome Mr. Scott Lee to the PFEW family. Scott has a B.S. in Chemistry from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and began his career working as an environmental chemist at Booz Al len and Hamilton in Washington, D.C. In 1987, Scott relocated to Erie, becoming president of Bierhaus

International, a family-owned mail order business selling beermaking kits and supplies. In 1989, he became president of Thomas Lee Printing & Mailing, and for the past twenty-seven years has served as president of the company, which provided offset printing, graphic design, data management and direct mail services to local businesses. This April, he sold the business to another Erie printing firm to pursue other interests.

Scott is intimately familiar with PFEW, having served as a Judge for several years, an advertising-marketing presenter for fifteen years, and a company advisor for twenty-two years. He brings with him a wide range of experience, including marketing, finance, creative writing, and business management, but most importantly, he brings a passion for helping young people realize their potential.

Scott has served on several boards in the Erie area and is past board chair of St. Martin Center, a local social service and emergency relief agency. Active in his church, he is a cantor, a member of the choir, and a member of the RCIA team. Scott has been married for thirty-two years to his wife Barb, and has a seventeen-year old son Sam who attended PFEW during the summer of 2015.

PFEW’s Precious “Partners”PFEW now enjoys a strong presence in all sixty-seven counties in Pennsylvania. We recruit our students from nearly 1,000 high schools and maintain relationships with over 1,200 companies and several thousand volunteers. A staff of seven people could never manage an organization with that scope were it not for the devotion and unwavering commitment of our more than 100 “partnering” organizations. These are the men and women executives, and their boards, who believe deeply in PFEW’s mission and work to “spread the good news” throughout the regions that they serve. In recent months, President & CEO John Trombetta and Vice President & COO Karen Musante have been crisscrossing the state, visiting scores of our “partners” who are pictured on these pages. They did not get to see everyone but visited so many that we only have room for their names and organizations. Our front page article once again detailed the exploding interest among high school students across Pennsylvania hoping to be part of PFEW’s unique journey into the world of business. Paradoxically, conditions in the business community across Pennsylvania, the source of virtually all of our funding, have been anything but conducive to raising scholarships for our students in recent months. The budget impasse in Pennsylvania from July until the end of the year caused havoc throughout thousands of schools and social service organizations. Charitable organizations like PFEW, which depend very much on the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, were hit particularly hard as many donors simply cannot make substantial gifts without the application of a corresponding tax credit. We were no exception and by year-end, we have learned that a number of our larger donors were unable to make their usual commitment. Coupled with the mess in Harrisburg, the extremely depressed prices of natural gas and oil have hit those industries very hard in regions throughout Pennsylvania, also impacting many of our loyal donors in those industries. As our readers know, none of the 2,200+ students we expect this summer will get to the program without that precious $575 scholarship donated by one of their local companies, civic

Student Scholarship Challengesorganizations or foundations. The graphic shows that we have achieved just 71% of our budget goal for the current year with only several months to go in our fundraising cycle. PFEW changes the attitudes of young people forever regarding the importance of private enterprise to our way of life. Please, if you haven’t yet made your pledge for student sponsorship this summer, it is so very easy. You can simply clip out the form on the next page and either mail or fax it to us at (814) 833-9850. If it’s easier, the online process is very simple. Visit www.pfew.org, click on the “Donors” tab in the top center of the homepage, then the link “Make a Pledge” in the dropdown menu and follow the easy instructions – it takes just minutes. We do

not need the funds until late summer and, indeed, there is a matching gift program on August 9th called “Erie

Gives”. That day, any pledge fulfilled or gift made results in a percentage match and is absolutely invaluable to us. As always, all gifts are fully tax-deductible and, as indicated earlier, PFEW also qualifies for the EITC program should you or your company be participating. Truly, we are making a difference in Pennsylvania’s future and in that of the nation. Thank you so much for supporting our mission and our kids!

PFEW: How did you get involved with PFEW?Nick: I attended as a student in ‘97 and came back as a company advisor in 2013. I got back involved because I really wanted to make a difference in students’ lives and give back to the business community. I think there is no other better way to do it than with helping to teach and coach high school students about the world of business and life beyond high school.

PFEW: What is the most valuable lesson you have learned while volunteering at PFEW?Nick: I’ve learned how much this program means to the students. Seeing them bond and work hard together
