Opening Hymn*

1. Forty days and forty nights

thou wast fasting in the wild;

forty days and forty nights

tempted, and yet undefiled:

2. Sunbeams scorching all the day;

chilly dew-drops nightly shed;

prowling beasts about thy way;

stones thy pillow, earth thy bed.

3. Shall not we thy sorrows share,

and from earthly joys abstain,

fasting with unceasing prayer,

glad with thee to suffer pain?

4. And if Satan, vexing sore,

Flesh or spirit should assail,

thou, his vanquisher before,

grant we may not faint nor fail.

5. So shall we have peace divine,

holier gladness ours shall be,

round us too shall angels shine,

such as ministered to thee.

6. Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear,

ever constant by thy side;

that with thee we may appear

at the eternal Eastertide.

Words: G H Smyttan (1822-1870) & Francis Pott (1832-1909)

Music: Aus der tiefe, Nürnbergisches Gesangbuch 1676

(Ancient & Modern – 121)

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God,

you hate nothing that you have made

and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent:

create and make in us new and contrite hearts

that we, worthily lamenting our sins

and acknowledging our wretchedness,

may receive from you, the God of all mercy,

perfect remission and forgiveness;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Joel 2.1-2,12-17

Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of

the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming, it is near – a day of darkness and

gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness! Like blackness spread upon the mountains a

great and powerful army comes; their like has never been from of old, nor will be again

after them in ages to come. Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with all your

heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your

clothing. Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger,

and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. Who knows whether he will

not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain-offering and a drink-offering for

the LORD, your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn assembly;

gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the aged; gather the children, even

infants at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her canopy.

Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep. Let

them say, ‘Spare your people, O LORD, and do not make your heritage a mockery, a

byword among the nations. Why should it be said among the peoples, “Where is their

God?”’

Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 5.20b–6.10

We entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to

be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. As we

work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he

says, ‘At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped

you.’ See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! We are putting no

obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of

God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions,

hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labours, sleepless nights, hunger; by

purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and

the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in

honour and dishonour, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet

are true; as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see – we are alive; as punished,

and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as

having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Gradual Hymn*

1. From the deep places, hear my cry,

those hidden depths of guilt within:

O God of mercy. God Most High,

keep no account of all my sin.

2. Before your glory none can stand,

no mortal eye behold your face:

extend to me your kingly hand,

the sovereign touch of saving grace.

3. O Lord, in whom all needs are met,

draw near in love to me, I pray,

for on your word my hopes are set,

as watchmen wait for coming day.

4. As watchmen wait till dawn appears,

so God’s redeeming love is shown;

to shed, unfailing through the years,

the dew of blessing on his own.

Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926)

Music: Breslau, German 15th century, harm W H Monk (1823-1889)

Gospel – Matthew 6.1-6,16-21

Jesus said to the disciples, ‘Beware of practising your piety before others in order to be

seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So whenever you

give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and

in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received

their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand

is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will

reward you. And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand

and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others.

Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your

room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who

sees in secret will reward you. And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the

hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I

tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash

your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in

secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Do not store up for yourselves

treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal;

but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes

and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart

will be also.’’

Anthem during the Imposition of Ashes*

Hear us, O Lord, have mercy upon us :

for we have sinned against thee.

To thee, Redeemer, on thy throne of glory :

lift we our weeping eyes in holy pleadings :

listen, O Jesu, to our supplications.

O thou chief Corner-stone, Right Hand of the Father :

Way of Salvation, Gate of Life Celestial :

cleanse thou our sinful souls from all defilement.

God, we implore thee, in thy glory seated :

bow down and hearken to thy weeping children :

pity and pardon all our grievous trespasses.

Sins oft committed now we lay before thee :

with true contrition, now no more we veil them :

grant us, Redeemer, loving absolution.

Innocent, captive, taken unresisting :

falsely accused, and for us sinners sentenced :

save us, we pray thee, Jesu our Redeemer.

The Lent Prose (Attende, Domine) plainsong

Offertory Hymn*

1. Jesu, lover of my soul,

let me to thy bosom fly,

while the nearer waters roll,

while the tempest still is high:

hide me, 0 my Saviour, hide,

till the storm of life is past;

safe into the haven guide,

O receive my soul at last.

2. Other refuge have I none,

hangs my helpless soul on thee;

leave, ah, leave me not alone,

still support and comfort me.

All my trust on thee is stayed,

all my help from thee I bring;

cover my defenceless head

with the shadow of thy wing.

3. Thou, O Christ, art all I want;

more than all in thee I find;

raise the fallen, cheer the faint,

heal the sick, and lead the blind.

Just and holy is thy name,

I am all unrighteousness;

false and full of sin I am,

thou art full of truth and grace.

4. Plenteous grace with thee is found,

grace to cover all my sin;

let the healing streams abound,

make and keep me pure within.

Thou of life the fountain art:

freely let me take of thee,

spring thou up within my heart,

rise to all eternity.

Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Aberystwyth, Joseph Parry (1841-1903) (Ancient & Modern – 128)

Communion Anthem*

Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake,

lay not our sins to our charge,

but forgive that is past,

and give us grace to amend our sinful lives:

to decline from sin and incline to virtue,

that we may walk in a perfect heart

before thee now and evermore. Amen.

from J Bull, Christian Prayers and Holy Meditations (1568)

Music: attrib Richard Farrant (c1530-1580)

or John Hilton (c1560-1608)

Post Communion Prayer

Almighty God,

you have given your only Son to be for us

both a sacrifice for sin and also an example of godly life:

give us grace that we may always most thankfully receive

these his inestimable gifts,

and also daily endeavour

to follow the blessed steps of his most holy life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn*

1. Through the night of doubt and sorrow

onward goes the pilgrim band,

singing songs of expectation,

marching to the promised land.

2. Clear before us through the darkness

gleams and burns the guiding light;

pilgrim clasps the hand of pilgrim,

stepping fearless through the night.

3. One the light of God’s own presence

o’er his ransomed people shed,

chasing far the gloom and terror,

brightening all the path we tread;

4. One the object of our journey,

one the faith which never tires,

one the earnest looking forward,

one the hope our God inspires:

5. One the strain that lips of thousands

lift as from the heart of one;

one the conflict, one the peril,

one the march in God begun:

6. One the gladness of rejoicing

on the far eternal shore,

where the one almighty Father

reigns in love for evermore.
