INTRODUCTION
This was the first well drilled on the Beta structure of block
34/10. The primary objective was to evaluate possible
hydrocarbon accumulations in the Middle Jurassic Brent
sandstones. The secondary objective was the Lower Jurassic
Dunlin and Statfjord sandstones.
The purpose of this report is to give an evaluation of the
petrophysical properties of the Brent Group using electrical
logs and core data. The Dunlin and Statfjord sandstones were
considered not hydrocarbonbearing and were not evaluated.

SUMMARY
Hydrocarbons were encountered in the Brent sands (2684.5 - 3000 mRKB), mainly in the Tarbert and Ness Formation. The logs
indicate a gas and oilbearing sand with a net pay of 122.5 m.
The Hnetpay/Hgross ratio is 0.53 in the hydrocarbon-bearing
interval ( 2684.5 - 2914 mRKB ) , The Hnetpay/Hnetsand-ratio is
0.94. The sand has a average porosity of 22.5% and the- netp pay of 23%. The water-saturation in the pay-zone has an average of
27%.
The core porosity over the interval 2684.5 - 2965.54 mRKB, is 20% (the log porosity in this interval 17%). The log and core
porosity agrees well as a general rule, with only a slight
difference due to the overburden effect.
The FMT pressures indicates an oil-water contact at about 2914
mRXB - + 5m, which seems reasonable according to the log evaluation. The FMT-pressures suggest an gas-oil contact at
about 2862 - + 12m. (ref. FMT Report, Well 34/10-17, October 1983, Engineer Per Seim. ) Drillstemtests (ref. Well Testing Report,
34/10-17, Jan. 1984) performed in the Ness and Etive Formations
showed that the reservoir contained water, oil and gas.

LITHOLOGY
Brent Group (2685 - 3000 mKB)
The Tarbert Formation (2685 - 2717 mKB)
The Tarbert Formation is composed of sandstone interbedded by
shales and some minor coal streaks. The sandstones consist of
quartz. The upper sandstone unit is typically medium to coarse,
well sorted, containing no calcareous cement or matrix. The
lower sandstone comprises a fine to medium grainsize,
occasionally very fine, well sorted, micaceous, generally
argillaceous with pyrite.
The shales are black, very carbonaceous with occasional mica and
pyrite inclusions.
The Ness Formation (2717 - 2934 mKB)
The lithology of the Ness Formation is characterized by good
sand layers with visual porosity, interbedded by shales and
coal. The sandstones generally described as quartz, very fine
to medium, predominantly very fine to fine, predominantly non
calcareous. The deeper part of the unit shows an increasing
degree of clay cementation, with traces of silica cement.
Layers of mica are common as well as fragments of coal. Pyrite
and glauconite are found as traces, particulary in the deeper
section of this unit.
The shales also have a good organic content in places and traces
of microcrystalline pyrite and mica are common.
The Etive Formation (2934 - 2936.5 mKB)
The Etive Formation is composed of a very fine to finely
grained, occasionally medium sandstone with well sorted quartz
grains. This unit contains less mica and has good visual
porosity.

The ~annoch Formation (2936.5 - 3000 mKB)
The lithology of the Rannoch Formation is a massive sandstone
unit with minor interbeds of siltstone. The sandstone is a
clear quartz sandstone, very fine to fine grains, occasional
medium to coarse, with slightly calcareous cement. The
siltstone has traces of microsrystalline mica. The siltstone
beds are described as having less calcareous cement. Good
visual porosity is seen throughout the unit.

LOG QUALITY
In general the logs are of good quality but there are certain
things one should consider before evaluating the logs,
Due to sticking the density and neutron log is less accurate in
the interval 2855 - 2875 mRKB. The GR from the
DIFL-BHC-Acoustic log is used in this particular interval, The
caliper from the DLL is preferred, since the caliper from the
Densilog, Neutron and GR is reading slightly too high,
The caliper of the DIFL-BHC-Acoustic log is 0.3 too high. There
is also slight sticking on this log but with no or little
influence on the logs. The Densilog, Neutron and GR is depth
shifted to match DIFL-BHC-Acoustic log. In addition there are
large washouts down to 2685 mRKB.

INPUT PARAMETERS
Formation Temperature
,
When corrected for borehole conditions the maximum temperature
of the particular logging run was used. The formation
temperature for later calculations, 92Oc, was obtained from
the logs.
Formation Water Resistivity (Rw)
A value of 0.079 ohm at 92 OC was chosen from the result from
a watersample from DST no.1. and controlled by calculations
with Rwa, ratiomethod and SP. This is equivalent to a
salinity of approximately 34000 ppm NaC1.
Mud Properties
The following values are reported by Dresser Atlas (Dual
Laterolog, Micro Laterolog, Gamma Ray, run no.1, 01.05.83):

Hydrocarbon Density
The densities from the FMT report were used:
gas gradient: 0.149 g/cc 7 U
oil gradient: 0.61 g/cc
In the waterbearing zones a HC-density of 0.8 g/cc of possible
residual hydro-carbons, was assumed.
True Resistivity (Rt and Rxo)
The dual laterolog, corrected for invasion effects, is used for
Rt determinations in the hydrocarbonbearing zone.
The induction log is used in the waterbearing zone below the
assumed water-oil contact at 2914 mRXB.
The RMLL, corrected for mudcake effects, is used as a Rxo
curve.
Shale Parameters
The shale parameters were picked from crossplots, histograms and
visual inspection of the logs. The parameters from the Dunlin
Group were dominating.

COMPUTATIONS
Shale Volume
The Density/Neutron crossplot and the GR are the main shale
indicators, but supplemented with the Sonic/neutron crossplot
( A tsh varying from 107 - 85 P sec/ft) or/and the Thorium or Thorium/Potassium curve in some sections.
The final shale volume used for further computations is picked
as the minimum,
The Tarbert and Rannoch sands caused some problems because of
mica content. In addition the Rannoch Formation contained some
zirkon enriched layers.
Porosity
The porosity is calculated with a complex lithology model using
density and neutron logs with following matrix parameters.

The Ness Formation

The heavy mineral (assumed to be muscovite) value is picked from
tables over log responses.

CORING SUMMARY

d i f f i c u l t i e s i n c o r r e l a t i n g t h e coredepth with t h e logdepth. A
core tends t o increase i t s length some , through handling a f t e r
a c t u a l l y it has been d r i l l e d . When t h e r e i s 100% recovery and
f a i r l y reasonable co r re la t ion between loggers depth and d r i l l e r s
depth ,some c o r r e l a t i o n problems may occur. This i s t h e case of
34/10-17. I n p a r t s t h e core was too l a r g e and i n a few places
it even overlapped.
The c o r r e l a t i o n presented i s considered t h e most reasonable one
with a maximum dep thsh i f t of 2 0.60 m.

LOG PERMEABILITY
The "KLOGH1' and the "KLOGV" curves are not pure log-calculated
permeability. Into the relationships between PORHE and YLH/KLV,
obtained by crossplots, we substituted the log porosity PHIF and
calculated the KLOGH/KLOGV values . These curves were created
due to cosmetic reasons.

DISCUSSION
The main problem in this well is the content of mica and heavy
mineral in the Tarbert and Rannoch Formations. The difference
in core and log porosity at some minor intervals is due to this
content. The Thorium and Thorium/Potassium curves from the
Spectralog were used with varying success and only included in
the shale computations in minor intervals of the Tarbert and
Rannoch Formations.
In general the log and core porosity of the sands agree well
with only a difference due to the overburden effect.
In the sand at 2870 mRKB, two meters of high porosity sand were
lost due to sticking problems. An assumed porosity was given.
Some coalbeds, displaying core porosity, were given assumed
porosity values, but in general the coal porosity and
hydrocarbonsaturation were filtered to give the value 0. These
coals are believed to be non-productive.
Dresser Atlas is a fairly new company working for Statoil and
have some differences of borehole corrections etc. which our
log-analysis system is not adapted too.
