1. IntroductionThe Northern Territory (NT) owns all reserves of petroleum - both onshore and in coastal waters in the NT.The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade administers and regulates petroleum tenure and activities in these areas.This includes petroleum resource exploration and development and the construction and operation of oil and gas transmission pipelines.The petroleum titles are governed by the following legislation:

the Petroleum Act 1984 which is the principal legislation dealing with petroleum tenure, exploration and production activities onshore and inland waters of the NT

the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1981 which caters for tenure, exploration and production activities in the 3 nautical mile strip of NT coastal waters.

The Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) is the custodian of knowledge and data on the Territory’s geology and resources, and undertakes activities to support and grow the petroleum and minerals exploration industry. The NT is prospective for both conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons in a number of sedimentary basins in both the onshore and offshore. Whilst the NT's onshore basins are prospective, they all remain underexplored by world standards. The NTGS manages statutory reporting of onshore petroleum exploration and production data that is submitted under the Petroleum Act as a condition of Exploration Tenure. Industry data becomes publically available after a legislated period of confidentiality. This document contains information about accessing publically available (open file) data including links to key reports and data related to the Georgina Basin acreage release 2021.

1.1. Georgina Basin The Georgina Basin is a frontier basin with conventional and unconventional petroleum potential. The southern Georgina Basin contains a thick middle Cambrian succession that contains organic rich shales that belong to three known petroleum systems- the Thorntonia, Arthur Creek and Hagen systems. Although no commercial discoveries are known, there are multiple oil shows throughout the Cambrian succession and numerous conventional stratigraphic and structural traps have been identified within the basin.Key publications on the petroleum geology of the basin have been summarised by Munson (2014) and include Questa (1994), Ambrose and Putnam (2006, 2007), Boreham and Ambrose (2007), Dunster et al (2007) , and Ayling et al (2016) . Summaries of the geology of the basin, with lists of key publications are in Kruse et al (2002, 2013), Dunster et al (2007) , and Carr et al (2016) .

2. Accessing NT datasetsThe Minerals and Energy Infocentre provides mining and geoscience information, minerals and energy industry exploration reports, NTGS products and resource industry news. Most products, information and data are available through STRIKE and GEMIS. However, you can get copies of products over the counter if you visit the InfoCentre, request to have material posted to you or you can make an enquiry or order copies of products and data not available online via the InfoCentre’s online enquiry form.The Spatial Territory Resource Information Kit for Exploration ( STRIKE ) is the web-mapping application for geoscientific data and minerals and energy tenure information in the NT. NTGS petroleum industry data holdings date from the 1960s to current. Locations of current and historical permits, wells and seismic surveys can be found on STRIKE. A user guide to STRIKE is available.The G eoscience   E xploration and   M ining   I nformation   S ystem ( GEMIS ) is an online database for accessing geoscientific reports and data kept by the Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS). Well completion reports and associated data, Geophysical reports and data and Seismic survey reports and most of the processed data and support data can be downloaded from GEMIS. Geophysical data can be downloaded as geolocated geophysical images (ECW format) from the NTGS Geophysical Image Web Server (GIWS). Large datasets and interpretive products over 1GB may not be available from GEMIS. You may have to supply your own portable hard drive for bulk requests. Each report will include a note to request larger file sizes from the InfoCentre. The following sections contain links to selected reports and data available to download through the online information systems.

3. Access to Georgina Basin core and cuttingsThe NTGS is the custodian of NT core and cuttings and has core libraries in Darwin and Alice Springs. The libraries contain solid core and cuttings from wells submitted by mineral and petroleum exploration companies, other NT government agencies and NTGS. Holdings are catalogued in COREDAT and the information is available on STRIKE under the ‘Drilling’ layer. Drill core and cuttings can be viewed and sampled by researchers in industry, government and research organisations. Information about viewing and/or sampling core can be found on the Core Facility Webpage. Reports and data on core analysis are catalogued in Core Sampling Reports.

DIP007 Geology and resource potential of the southern Georgina Basin Dunster et al (2007) published a digital information package (DIP) containing a GIS package and interpretive report describing the geology and resource potential of the southern Georgina Basin is available on GEMIS.

4.2. NTGS Report 22 Petroleum geology and potential of the onshore NT, 2014Munson (2014) published a report on the petroleum geology and potential of the onshore Northern Territory. This report presents a systematic review of the petroleum geology of all of the more prospective onshore basins including the Georgina Basin. The report summarises the structural evolution, stratigraphic successions, geochemistry, and petroleum systems are examined, along with standardised data on the fields, production, reserves and potential resources.

4.3. Geoscience Australia’s Georgina Basin data packageCarr et al (2016) published a Geoscience data package focusing of the southern Georgina Basin in the NT and Queensland. The package includes an ARC-GIS data package, Seismic data package, well folio for selected wells in the southern Georgina Basin and geomechanical data.
