AGM – Minutes
Tuesday 10 April 2018
The branch Vice-President, Phil Cooney (Chairman), declared the meeting open at 12:30
pm.
1. Quorum There being 28 members, the Chairman declared a quorum present.
2. Minutes of the 2017 AGM The minutes of the previous AGM were circulated and read immediately prior to the meeting.
It was moved by Paul Lennox and seconded by John Blumer that the minutes be accepted.
The meeting unanimously passed the proposal.
3. President’s Report and Financial Summary– 2017 The Presidents report was also circulated immediately prior to the meeting. The Chairman
summarised the following aspects of the President’s report which had been previously
circulated;
The Committee met 11 times during the year,
9 monthly” technical meetings were held and attracted between 20-50 attendees,
with an average attendance of 38
3 twilight meetings were added to the program. These attracted an average of 20
attendees
Total Branch members decreased to 218 (includes 30 students),
Two short courses and 3 social events, including one student night, the annual family
weekend away and the annual golf tournament, were held,
Three student scholarships ($1,500 each) were awarded.
Financially, the Branch recorded a loss of $11,330. All things considered this was not
a bad result since the accounts do not include membership subscriptions nor
(Federal) administration costs.
The Chairman asked that the President’s report for 2017 be accepted as an accurate record
of the Branch’s events. The proposal was moved by Mauri Drew and seconded by Sam Mc
Dermott and the meeting unanimously passed the proposal.

PESA NSW Branch 2018 Annual Report
The PESA NSW Branch continued to work towards its mission statement of supporting technical
excellence, education, innovation and interactive discussion within the petroleum exploration industry.
The branch had a positive year in 2018.
Commendations for the efforts of the committee to attract and select quality expert speakers and
courses and actively advertising them to its members. PESA NSW held 15 events in 2018 including
seven technical lunches, two twilight seminars, two short courses, Christmas party, golf day and golf
weekend away.
The committee aimed to bring its members a diverse range of quality speakers and topics and
succeeded by hosting technical meetings and workshops covering many facets of petroleum
exploration including;
Prospect & portfolio risking
Structural geology
Surface logging
NMR logging and petrophysics
Australian and international basin analysis
In 2018, PESA NSW continued to support the education of our local geoscience students. Two student
scholarships were awarded and the winners were given the opportunity to present their work earlier
this year at the February 2019 technical lunch. There were many scholarship applications received and
their quality was of the highest standard. The winners are detailed in Table 1 at the end of this report.
A number of PESA NSW committee members and branch members devoted a huge amount of time and
effort to ensure the success of the Australian Exploration Geoscience Conference (AEGC) in February
2018. The conference was well attended with over 900 attendees and the committee received positive
feedback from members and exhibitors. Thank you to all those involved and for bringing a new
geoscience conference to NSW.
PESA NSW aimed to further strengthen ties between complementary industry organizations including
the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists
(ASEG). This was achieved by co-advertising events and offering discounted rates to each other’s
members. This is seen as a key to bring down costs, increase attendee numbers and provide members
with access to a wider variety of high quality technical and networking events.
In 2018, PESA NSW incurred a small loss, although this was largely in line with what we had budgeted.
Financial pressures on the industry made this year more challenging to attract high attendee numbers
and keep membership numbers up, however budgets and expenditures were amended to try and
combat this. The 2018 profit and loss statement for PESA NSW can be found in Figure 1 at the end of
this report.
As the following financial statements show, the NSW Branch made a loss during Financial Year 2018.
The Accounts prepared by the Federal Office show a loss of $8,641.98 (2017 loss of $11,330.59, 2016
loss of $1,500.32). The loss is more than covered by annual membership dues and was well within the
budgeted loss for NSW.

In 2018, The PESA NSW branch had 139 financial members (2017; 188), 20 financial student members
(2017; 30) and one financial graduate member. Numbers are still relatively low when compared to pre-
2015 numbers.
If you have not already renewed your membership for 2019, please remember to do so. Your support is
vital.
I’d like to extend a very big thank you to the NSW committee. The time put in by the individuals to the
voluntary roles is appreciated and all work was done with great enthusiasm and rigor. I would like to
thank you all for providing your valuable time and patience in 2018.
Finally I would like to acknowledge the support of a number of companies particularly in the hosting of
Branch Committee meetings – Horizon, Bridgeport, Denison Gas and Oil Search.

Branch committee, the summary of events for 2018 and the 2018 Financial Statements.
