NOTES

Fugue in G Minor, The “Little” by J.S. Bach; arr. Francis Grant

Composed sometime between 1703 and 1707, the “Little” Fugue in G Minor, BWV 578, is hardly a small work. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) during his late teens or early twenties, the piece vividly demonstrates his methods of learning how to compose by modeling Italian composers. Not published until 1891, the work has become one of Bach’s most popular compositions.

Sinfonia in D Major by J.C. Bach

Known as “the London Bach,” Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) was the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. Following in his father’s footsteps, J.C. Bach also became a composer, moved to Italy in 1756, and spent much of the remainder of his life in England. He composed his Sinfonia in D in London in 1781.

Troika from Lieutenant Kijé by Sergei Prokofi ev

Sergei Prokofi ev (1891-1953) has proved to be the most well known composers of the Soviet Union. Initially wary of the new regime, Prokofi ev fl ed the Russian Revolution. After residing in France during the 1920s, he decided to return to his native Russia in 1933. Lieutenant Kijé (1934) was Prokofi ev’s fi rst fi lm score; a comedy, it is a satirical account of the reign of Czar Paul I.

Capriccio Espagnol by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; arr. Sandra Dackow

Prior to 1871, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) had been one of the foremost members of a group of fi ve Russian composers known as “moguchaya kuchka,” or “the mighty handful.” Comprised of fi ve self-taught musical amateurs, the group based their music on Russian musical traditions and opposed foreign infl uence. However, Rimsky-Korsakov later expressed interest in the folk music of other cultures. Capriccio Espagnol (composed in 1887) contains distinct references to the melodies, rhythms, and harmonies of Spanish folk music. The fi rst and fourth movements use distinctive rhythms of the Albarado, a dance form of Asturia (a region on the central and western part of Spain’s north coast), while the third movement features unmistakable Gypsy music.

Rhythm Dances by Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages (b. 1975) has enjoyed a prolifi c career. In addition to composing, he is also a conductor, performer, and producer. He received his bachelor’s degree from James Madison University, and a master’s degree from the University of Miami. Balmages composed Rhythm Dances in 2015; the piece is inspired by Kabalevsky’s Comedian’s Galop, John Adams’s Harmonielehre, and Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

!

Gigue Francoise by Marc-Antoine Charpentier/arranged by Robert McCashin

Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) was a French Baroque composer who was both prolifi c and versatile. Among his many divertissements, interludes, sonatas and sacred instrumental pieces was a collection of dance movements, “Concerto pour quatre parties de violes.” Gigue Francoise is one of those dances that Robert McCashin has transcribed for string orchestra. It gives us a glimpse of a French Baroque dance and a window into the writing of Charpentier.

Cloud Dance by Thom Sharp

Thom Sharp wrote Cloud Dance three years ago as a beautiful, lyrical work for string orchestra. The melodic, fl owing lines of the music represent the shapes and movements of clouds as they dance across the sky.

Chicken Foot Transplant by Matt Turner

Written by Matt Turner, one of the world’s leading improvising cellists, this is a high energy piece with an infectious groove. With a smorgasbord of styles, including blues, country fi ddling and funk, you’ll surely want to put on your dancin’ shoes!

Danza Final by Alberto Ginastera/arranged by Robert Longfi eld

The Finale from “Estancia” by Argentinian composer, Alberto Ginastera has been made popular on YouTube with Gustavo Dudamel and the youth orchestra from Venezuela. This Young Edition arrangement makes Danza Final accessible for string orchestras, while maintaining the high energy and excitement of the original.

H elen Weed is the founding conductor and music director of the Prelude Chamber Strings and Prelude String Orchestra. She received a B.M. degree in music education from Chapman University where she studied conducting with John Koshak. Currently Ms.

Weed is music arts coordinator at Calvary Church of Santa Ana, instrumental music teacher at Calvary Christian School, and also conductor of the Praise Symphony Orchestra. She is a member of the Music Teachers Association and a past president of the National Association of Church Musicians. She is also a private teacher of violin, viola and piano and has traveled to several countries, including Romania, Brazil, Chile and Cuba to conduct, teach and take instruments and supplies to musicians. She loves to see students excel beyond what they could ever imagine!

P relude String Orchestra (PSO) began its first season in fall of 1994 with advice and financial support from the Tustin Area Council for Fine Arts. Annette Brower, who was serving as secretary to the council at that time, volunteered to manage the project. She has continued

to manage the Orchestra since the founding year. Annette chose Helen Weed as the conductor because of her enthusiastic pledge of commitment to this orchestra which did not yet exist. Ms. Weed chose the name of the orchestra, “Prelude,” to indicate the first orchestral experience for many children. Prelude Strings is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation.

All students study with private teachers and have been accepted based on an audition. Due to overwhelming interest, the Orchestra grew from a group of eight violins and two cellos in its first season to about 100 musicians divided into two string ensembles. Prelude String Orchestra is designed to meet the needs of intermediate level students and Prelude Chamber Strings (PCS) is for more advanced students. Orchestra members are in elementary and junior high school. These musicians come from Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles Counties.

For the past 23 years Prelude has enjoyed performing throughout Orange County at various community churches, as well as Crystal Cathedral, Santa Ana Zoo, Laguna Hills and Brea Malls, South Coast Plaza, Tustin Historical Society home tour, Laguna Woods, Knott’s Berry Farm, Disneyland, Segerstrom Concert Hall and Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Prelude Strings wants to thank the many musicians, parents and community patrons whose overwhelming interest and support has helped make the orchestras a success. It has been our great pleasure to bring fine music to the citizens of Orange County and enrich the lives of hundreds of young musicians.

PSSS was founded independently by Lonnie Bosserman and Margie Chan in 1991 and was integrated into the Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles family in 2007. PSSS expands the creativity, musicianship and technical skills of string instrumentalists from grades 6 through 9 within the supportive structure of a highly educational and engaging ensemble experience.

Each season, PSSS participates in the Orange County Suzuki Festival and performs in the world-class Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. In recognition of its 25th anniversary and extraordinary artistic caliber in the 2015-16 season, PSSS performed at the invitation-only National Orchestra Festival in Tampa, Fla. in conjunction with the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) annual conference, where the ensemble received unanimous superior ratings for their phenomenal performance. As a culmination of the 2017-2018 season, the ensemble will be taking a 6-day international tour to Costa Rica.
