PETEX is the largest subsurface-focused E&P conference and exhibition in the UK, attracting thousands of delegates from across the world and across a spectrum of industry sectors, from super- majors to consultancies. The conference is also attended by a large contingent of geoscience Masters and PhD students. Conveniently based at ExCeL, London, PETEX is a biennial event featuring a technical programme highlighting the latest developments in exploration, development, production and subsurface technology. It is with great pleasure that I can welcome you on behalf of the PESGB and the organising committees to this year’s PETEX conference. This year finds our industry facing its greatest challenge for perhaps a generation but with this also comes great opportunity. Dr Parke A. Dickey, a petroleum geology professor at the University of Tulsa back in the 50’s said: “We usually find oil in a new place with old ideas. Sometimes, we find oil in an old place with a new idea, but we seldom find much oil in an old place with an old idea. Several times in the past we thought we were running out of oil, when actually we were running out of ideas.” And that really sums up what this conference is about. I hope you enjoy it.
