Chapter one: He is Chapter one: He is back!back!

Tim Meeker’s brother, Sam, came back from his college. His is hyped up because he heard a war news, which had pleased him. However, Father doesn’t really like about it, because he thinks same is speaking treason.

Sam confesses that he is going to go to a war, and his father doesn't like that. Not one bit. So after they argued, Sam runs away from home, leaving his father to cry by himself, making him guilty.

Sam stoled the Brown Bess, the family’s gun, and now he is gone. Tim saw him and talked about this situation, but Sam had his mind, and he ran off to Tom Warrups’s house.

Chapter Two: So he Chapter Two: So he goes...goes...

Tim and Father has a little talk about Sam. Father asks if he knows where Sam is. Tim knows, but he doesn't want to give away his brother because he loves him.

Tom Warrups’s tell Tim not to tell anybody where Sam is, and Tim agrees. Tim lies to his father that he is going to move logs, and goes to Tom Warrups’s house. He meets Sam and Betsy there.

They meet and talk about Sam going to war. Betsy and Sam seems to be thinking the same thing, and she thinks Sam should go to a war. Tim finds out that Sam took the Brown Bess. Tim says that the family needs it, but Betsy and Sam are insisting that he needs it. Tim breaks down and runs back home, because he was confused.

Chapter Three: Sam in Chapter Three: Sam in warwar

After Sam is gone, Tim has a long day without his brother. He really misses Sam, and wants him to come back. Betsy Read goes to the tarven quite a lot, and goes around eavesdropping people’s conversation.

One day, Betsy Read called Tim, and told him that Sam will be coming back soon. Tim is waiting for his brother to come. On November, Betsy tells Tim that Sam is back, in the Redding.

Chapter Four: Sam in Chapter Four: Sam in ReddingRedding

Tim got excited and waited for Sam to come back. When he knew Sam was back, he sneaked from his chore, and went to Tom Warrups's to see Sam. However, he heard shouting at his house. He crept to see what it was, and found out that his father was being held up by military officers, and they were looking for the gun. Tim new where to go.

Tim went to Warrups’s house, and he saw Sam with the gun. Sam was sleeping, so Tim took it. He ran, but Sam woke up and caught up with him. They had a brief talk about the war and house Sam should go to the house with him. Sam follows Tim, and Tim’s father saw him. Sam runs off, and waving to father and Tim before he disappeared from the sight.

Chapter Five: A job...Chapter Five: A job...

After Sam had gone, there were few war news in the newspaper. From now and then, the troops came by, confiscating any weapon the people in town had. Some came to steal food. Food was getting scarce, and they had to work harder.

One day, Mr. Heron came to the tavern, and had told Tim’s father that there was a job for Tim to do; carrying a business letter down the Fairfield. Tim wanted to do it, but his father rejected the idea, and later telling Tim that it wasn’t a business letter at all. However, Tim still wanted to do it, so he figured a way out.

After Tim had found a way out, he went to Mr. Heron, and got the letter to deliver it. Things were looking bright, when Betsy interferes Tim, and rips the cover to see what was written. It said: If this message is received, we will know that the messenger is reliable.

Chapter Seven: To Chapter Seven: To FairfieldFairfield

Tim’s father tells Tim that he has to go to Fairfield and get the supplies to run the tavern. He follows his father, and they are met with couple of cow-boys that hurt father, with the butt of the gun. Luckily, the escorts came and rescued them, and they were able to go safely to their cousin’s house.

Chapter Eight: In the Chapter Eight: In the safe housesafe house

They safely came to their cousin’s house, and shared their stories. Tim has a little talk with the cousin, and sleeps. Next day, they continue their voyage, and they meet their trader. So far, everything is going right.

Chapter Nine: Back to Chapter Nine: Back to the house...the house...

After they spend there night in their cousins house, they had set off back to the Redding. Tim was taking care of the ox, and father was riding on. Father was gone for a while, but Tim realizes that his father was gone for a long time.

He meets the cow-boys, and tells them there was an ambush. The cow-boys fled, and Tim goes back home happily, yet worried about his father.

Chapter Ten: Two Chapter Ten: Two down, two left.down, two left.

After coming back home, Tim’s life changed quite a lot; he had more chores due to absence of Sam and father. He was more mature, and more responsible with the jobs he have now.

One day, the British troops have marched into the Redding. They haven’t done real damage, but they took people like Jerry Stanford, and killed the Negro, Ned. After the killing, they had left.

Chapter Eleven: Is Chapter Eleven: Is that you, Sam?that you, Sam?

After the British troops have left, the Redding have cleared up and found what the British troops did. Later on, the Continentals (where Sam is in) came to Redding. They came to have dinner and shelter. Tim found out that Sam was here too.

Tim meets Sam, and talks about father and life in army. The mother insists that Sam should stay and help the family, but Sam tells that he made a vow with his friend not to quit until they win.

Chapter Twelve: Oh Chapter Twelve: Oh father...father...

They have found out that Father had been on a prisoner ship, and he was dead. They have also found out that Jerry Stanford was dead on the boat too. It was getting harder to live, because all the prices were going up, and it was getting colder.

One winter, Sam returned to the house again. Sam tells that the life is harsh, and orders Tim to hide the beef so the soldiers wouldn’t steal them. When they were talking, they found few soldiers stealing their cow. Sam tries to stop them, but gets arrested and is accused for stealing the cow.

Chapter Thirteen: He Chapter Thirteen: He didn’t do it...didn’t do it...

Tim went the the Colonel, but he said he isn’t sure what the General will do about the Sam. Tim is dead worried about Sam.

Colonel came to the tavern and told Tim that Sam is going to have hard time. He tells the family that Sam is going to be executed. Tim went the Colonel Parsons and got a note to give to General Putnam that Sam is innocent. He sees Sam in the prison, and he knows that this will be the last time he sees his brother.

Chapter Fourteen: Chapter Fourteen: Goodbye, SamGoodbye, Sam

After he gave the note, Tim knew all he had to do was wait. However, the result was that they were going to kill Sam. Tim was angry, and he tired to save his brother. However, he just got wounded, and he went back home.

The next day, the mother refused to go the execution of Sam. Tim knew he would want somebody there, so Tim went. Tim called Sam, and Sam smiled to Tim. Tim was shot in close ranged, and that was the last time of Tim seeing his brother Sam smile.
